Postscript:

Doing my research after the event (there's a reason I never got a First) I learn that:

• Cuckoos are not a named protected species, but all species of birds are protected. ....But only when they are nesting.

....So cuckoos are effectively the only species of bird not protected at all.

Serves 'em right, freeloading bastards.
