The genderbread person.

Introduced as a resource at multi agency training today at a school, the trainer was wearing a TWAW t-shirt.

Very directive training, almost militant - affirmation is the only way. Lots of skepticism and even some sniggering from the staff attending, and attempts we’re made to challenge the trainer but they would not deviate from the dogma.

I was looking for the thread that was on here asking for training experiences but couldn’t find it, apologies for starting a new thread.

The fox ate the Gingerbread Man in the original story. Those damn foxes get everywhere. My cousin had some in the hen house.

So I'm not allowed to wear one of Posie's T-Shirts but this individual can wear an offensive T-shirt and that's acceptable?

Youwontcatchme · 16/11/2019 08:34

The majority of the sniggers came from male staff - am I allowed to say male? A pile of the resources were left on a table to help ourselves to, hardly any were taken. I have never seen the genderbread man before, apologies if has been around for ages. Someone asked the trainer why can’t we just leave the students alone, if a girl wants to dress in a masculine way then just let her, apparently that is unfair as she would clearly be identifying as a male, and by not making her aware of her options (ie to be trans) we are removing her freedom of choice.

*genderbread person - not man - whoops

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/11/2019 08:37

What did the trainer say?

Youwontcatchme · 16/11/2019 08:55

The trainer said the bit about it being unfair as she would clearly be identifying as a male, and by not making her aware of her options (ie to be trans) we are removing her freedom of choice.

The person asking (male) said but she wouldn’t magically grow a penis so how could a girl become a man and the trainer said not all men have penises. It really was excruciatingly uncomfortable training.

The GenderBread person has been around for a while. It's recommended as a resource among pshe teachers.

ValancyRedfern · 16/11/2019 08:59

Glad there was a sceptical response at your school OP.

TruthOnTrial · 16/11/2019 09:04

What a shame that you weren't all wearing Woman = Aduot Human Female t'shirt, might have been a bit of a stand off.

Invite them back for a proper debate whilst wearing your own factual t'shirts.

Were there science teachers listening and absorbing this without challenging it Confused

Youwontcatchme · 16/11/2019 09:08

At the end of the training we were not really any closer to being able to support the students other than a recommendation to refer them to an LGBTQetc support charity.

OP posts:
Youwontcatchme · 16/11/2019 09:09

A science teacher was the one who made the comment that they won’t magically grow a penis.

Way to go! Facing with reality!

FamilyOfAliens · 16/11/2019 09:24

the trainer was wearing a TWAW t-shirt.

Wait, what? Someone came into a school wearing a political slogan on their t-shirt and was allowed to deliver training?

Maybe I should run my next school safeguarding course wearing my “eat the rich” t-shirt. I’m sure that would be allowed.

GaraMedouar · 16/11/2019 09:26

Oh my goodness - hope they don’t have this at my DDs school. I’m worried about the shaving armpits. I do in the Summer , but in the Winter I can’t be bothered - Does this make me a man in the winter months? ! Grin

I make sure DD knows what is a boy, what is a girl. She knows that if a boy chops his winkie off, then he becomes a boy who’s chopped his winkie off.

Cookieflavoredbiscuit · 16/11/2019 09:26

Not that it's the point, but why is "expression" pointing to its armpit?

Maybe that's because if you identify as a a woman, part of the "expression" would be to shave it, and if you identify as a man, you don't?

But I don't identify as a man or shave anywhere, so...

BadgertheBodger · 16/11/2019 09:29

The absolute nonsense of this and other similar training makes my teeth itch. I do not understand why such a profoundly incorrect, anti-science position is considered to be acceptable Hmm

EL2019 · 16/11/2019 09:34

“ if a girl wants to dress in a masculine way then just let her, apparently that is unfair as she would clearly be identifying as a male”

FFS. Do we really have to explain it in one syllable words?
I went to an all girls sixth form when Nirvana and grunge were at their height. The presenter would have been very confused by the amount of baggy flannel shirts and DM boots being worn. Not a glittery handbag or a false eyelash in site. Clearly there should have been some kind of trans intervention as we were all crying out for help.

Cookieflavoredbiscuit · 16/11/2019 09:39

Here we have the more sophisticated Gender Unicorn, which helpfully adds an "other" category, and more clearly differentiates between "sex" and "sex assigned at birth. And leaves armpits out.

Melroses · 16/11/2019 10:01

Oh thank you - knew there was one somewhere!

I have come to dislike unicorns intensely. Woe betide anyone who gives me something with a unicorn on it.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/11/2019 10:24

Unicorns and mermaids and all manner of creatures that don't actually exist that are very appealing to children. It's the I have a van with puppies would you like to come see of the internet.

Maybe we should make a Gender Medusa with helpful little arrows.

Youwontcatchme · 16/11/2019 10:58

What would happen if the genderbread person rode in on the gender unicorn?

All due respect....fuck femininity and masculinity - this is so 50s!?

ShagMeRiggins · 16/11/2019 11:08

Infuriating. INFURIATING!!

This is my 12-year-old daughter being described, and though I grew up stereotypically girly-girl (cheerleader, ballet) who moved into uni chinky sweaters and boots, then found my own true style and comfort in who I am (a mix of both, surprise surprise), I don’t want these fuckers messing with our children.

I let my daughter be who she is, and express herself how she likes. She doesn’t need to be told that she identifies as male if she happens to be non-conforming to gender stereotypes.

Absolute fuckers.

MrsWednesdayteatime · 16/11/2019 11:09

Gender stereotyping = banned in advertising as harmful

Gender stereotyping = promoted in schools and workplaces by Gingerbread people, unicorns, mermaids and jelly babies!

Confused
ShagMeRiggins · 16/11/2019 11:11

And saying “let” my daughter be who she is, I realise, is fairly controlling language. More accurately, my husband and I love her for who she is and encourage her self-expression whether that be academically, emotionally, or sartorially, etc.
