We are now 'carriers'

So, I'm on a First Aid course today and whilst revisiting the Recovery Position the demonstrators mentioned that the old rule of describing the recovery position for pregnant women was 'Ladies on the Left'....rolling to avoid the placenta. Well would you believe it we can no longer use that little saying ..we have to say 'Carrier on the Left' as men can now have children.

Some of the male attendees were shocked and had never heard of such a thing.

All the women rolled their eyes. 'Ladies' erased...just like that.

It's exhausting. The utter bullshit of it all.

CeridwenTheWitch · 13/11/2019 21:10

That's disgusting. We are not 'carriers,' like walking incubators. We are women, adult human females. Only women can get pregnant. We need to keep pushing back and not let this get normalised before we are erased completely.

What the hell!

If someone used the term 'carrier' I wouldn't even know what they meant. I certainly wouldnt think they was pregnant, I'd probably think they were carrying a disease.

The world has gone bat shit crazy!

inwood · 13/11/2019 21:23

It's exhausting bullshit

StarGOLD · 13/11/2019 21:25

Well when a man asked how on earth that worked I said it didn't really did it..and everyone agreed. Even the trainer rolled her eyes at having to mention it...It's coming from the top...the people who govern the First Aid at Work guidelines.

A ''carrier'' is a person or animal that carries and transmits a disease, but without falling ill themselves. Like Typhoid Mary.

We are now 'carriers'
Redshoeblueshoe · 13/11/2019 21:30

Inebriati absolutely.
Carrier carries a disease, or a medical condition

Redshoeblueshoe · 13/11/2019 21:30

I hope you all complained on the feedback forms

GrinitchSpinach · 13/11/2019 21:36

Yes, Inebriati. Pregnancy as pathology. So progressive!

StarGOLD · 13/11/2019 21:50

I've trawled the First Aid sites on the web and cannot find anywhere where a pregnant person in any First Aid training scenario is referred to as a 'Carrier'. Pregnant Woman or Pregnant casualty are the terms used...I think our trainer was being unnecessarily PC and yes, I will be complaining on the feedback form at the end of the course.

Good Star

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/11/2019 21:57

‘we have to say‘ - no. No we don’t. We won’t.

Redshoeblueshoe · 13/11/2019 21:59

So I'm assuming you have another day tomorrow. Have you covered heart attacks ? Because the symptoms differ between men and women, so if you can't differentiate between men and women then it gets seriously dangerous.

Savingforarainyday · 13/11/2019 21:59

Who is the training provider?

StarGOLD · 13/11/2019 22:02

An independent.

OP posts:
ShonaAndTheWaterHorse · 13/11/2019 22:05

No one would understand "carrier" means a pregnant woman/person.

Everyone is going to think it means someone with an infectious or contagious disease.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/11/2019 22:09

‘Put the carrier on the recovery position’
‘What is it - Ebola or swine flu?’

VinandVigour · 13/11/2019 22:43

I was at an adult safeguarding training event last Friday, and every time the trainer said ‘Gender’ I said ‘Sex’, I’m past the point of no return. I think the trainer had absolutely had enough by the end of the afternoon. Maybe next time he will just get it right.

Ness1234 · 13/11/2019 22:45

This sort of language causes confusion and could potentially cost lives through misunderstandings. It helps no one.....

anomoony · 13/11/2019 22:47

If someone used the term 'carrier' I wouldn't even know what they meant.

Same here. And it's not awesome when First Aid instructions are unclear.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/11/2019 22:50

"But first put on your Outbreak style suit before you get too close to the carrier, because Ebola is very contagious"

Fraggling · 13/11/2019 22:53

Carrier means carrying a disease.

That's grim.

Sunsoottitsoot · 13/11/2019 22:54

top...the people who govern the First Aid at Work guidelines.

First aid is no longer regulated by HSE, it's up to the employer to do due diligence so it's either an internal company thing for them or maybe it's in the newest edition of the handbook published by SJA, SAFA and BRC.

it sounds like bullshit though, I don't believe its come "from the top".

Redshoeblueshoe · 13/11/2019 22:55

Where I used to work used an independent contractor for first aid training, so I can well imagine that they are stressing carriers as they are trusting attendees to complain or take the piss
