Women who dont wear bras are not allowed to visit prisons!

When I first saw this headline I thought it was a joke, but apparently it is official prison policy!

“All women are required to wear underwear including a bra when visiting the prison, not just in the interests of other visitors, particularly children, but also to help our staff who are searching for contraband."

Are women's breasts a threat to children?

And would have thought braless women were less able to smuggle contraband.

What is this about?

What about if they have had a mastectomy? Especially a recent one?

DoYouRememberTheInnMiranda · 13/11/2019 19:34

Can she use self Id to her advantage here?

slipperywhensparticus · 13/11/2019 19:38

Are they taking the fucking piss here? It's my choice to go bra and knickers free should I choose technically cant I walk around bollock naked like the naked rambler? ( just not in Scotland?)

30under · 13/11/2019 19:40

I don't see how not wearing a bra, hinders staff searching for contraband.

TheChampagneGalop · 13/11/2019 19:44

It's really weird that there is a rule that says that women must be wearing a specific boob-garment.
She was wearing underwear, a vest top, under a fully covering outfit.

HappyHammy · 13/11/2019 19:44

You can read their visitor dress code policy online, all prisons have a policy

dentydown · 13/11/2019 19:50

I wonder what age a child would be required to wear a bra. 10,11,12?

MIdgebabe · 13/11/2019 19:51

What about a flabby man?

Uncompromisingwoman · 13/11/2019 19:51

Must men wear vests? Oh no, silly me, it's only women where our clothing is policed.

FlaviaAlbia · 13/11/2019 19:56

That is wierd. I wonder if it's been brought in as a reaction to something happening and they've decided this was the easiest way to go instead of dealing with whatever the behaviour was?

bd67th · 13/11/2019 20:05

So if I want to visit a prisoner, I have to buy and wear an agonisingly painful chest restrictor and spend the day having my armpits impaled by the underwires whilst cheesewire elastic slices through my ribs and the shoulder straps give me a migraine?[1] That's fucking ridiculous.

[1]: And that's after a bravissimo fitting. Comfortable bras for a 30" ribcage and 44" bust don't exist.

HumberHellraiser · 13/11/2019 20:07

Hmmm now what has happened here to prompt such a requirement?

JasonPollack · 13/11/2019 20:09

What the fuck? Why is it in the interests of children for women to wear bras? How would they even know?!

JasonPollack · 13/11/2019 20:10

wonder what age a child would be required to wear a bra. 10,11,12?

This though.

“All women are required to wear underwear including a bra when visiting the prison [....] in the interests of other visitors, particularly children”

I don’t know about you but I’m waiting for the next article about how multiple children have been harmed by free range breasts 😂

SingingLily · 13/11/2019 20:12

I'm not defending what happened but simply suggest that the prison is trying to prevent visitors from concealing contraband under the breasts and smuggling such items into the prison.

Babies' nappies are another common method to conceal unauthorised items.

SingingLily · 13/11/2019 20:15

I should have added that this is a privately run prison - Serco. The rules shouldn't vary between public sector and private sector in my view, but they do.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 13/11/2019 20:16

Simply identify as male and your problem is solved...

Grin I spat my tea out reading that. Brilliant.

Is also like to add a point about same said breasts being extremely important to the same said children as their main food source as infants but I'm too tired to make it into a proper, intelligent sentence but I hope you all get the just and the irony of it all.

PhonicTheHedgehog · 13/11/2019 20:23

It doesn’t say women have to wear a bra on their breasts, just that they have to wear a bra and wear underwear. I can see imagine interesting choices in headgear.

OldCrone · 13/11/2019 20:31

According to HappyHammy's link, all visitors have to wear bras (or bra's). So men and children as well as women.

All visitors at HMP Thameside must be appropriately dressed at all times. Failure to comply will result in you being refused entry to the establishment. The following resitrctions apply to all visits of all ages.

Bra’s must be worn and covered by clothing (unless you have a medical note to state otherwise

fallfallfall · 13/11/2019 20:41

So if asked to strip down, all you bra and knickerless people are okay naked in front of staff?

TheDropBear · 13/11/2019 20:42

I wonder if it's to do with strip searching?

Prior to a full (or ‘Level 2’) strip search, female prisoners must be subjected to a Level 1 search which involves the removal of clothes except for the woman’s underwear and bra. A hand held metal detector must be used and a gown must be provided so that the woman can appropriately cover herself.

A Level 2 search may only follow if, once the Level 1 search has been completed, there is intelligence or suspicion that the prisoner has concealed an item in her underwear or if items have been discovered during Level 1 of the search.

www.saunders.co.uk/news/strip-searching-women-in-prison.html

This site suggests a search with bra and underwear on must be done before a full strip search is allowed of prisoners. Found other information online which suggests visitors can also be subjected to strip searches (with the option to refuse but then not be allowed to visit). The rules on how to conduct the actual search are likely similar.

Goosefoot · 13/11/2019 21:14

My first thought is that so they can potentially search visitors without them being totally naked.

I'm not sure about the children thing though? Maybe so you won't be searched nude in front of kids?

I will say, if I was going to a men's prison, I might tend to want to wear a bra.
