This sort of thing makes me glad that we do not have a tv

RuffleCrow · 11/11/2019 20:44

These comments about Annie Lennox sum up exactly what's wrong with genderist vision - any woman in slightly masculine styling isn't simply expressing a side of her personality - she's actually attempting to be male in some way. Instead of travelling forward 30 years from the 80s we all headed back in the Delorian to 1955 instead. Shock

Thingybob · 11/11/2019 20:45

I agree that he is obviously really hurt by the rejection of his biological father. He also hinted at the bullying and exclusion he has experienced from his peers at school which sadly is a normal experience for boys who are that gender non conforming.

But I didn't think the family were f*ed up. I say well done to his Mum and other family members, who obviously love him and accept him for who he is so he in turn can accept himself as a member of the biological class he was born into. Surely that's preferable to being told he was born into the wrong body?

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 11/11/2019 20:58

Aren't there also a myriad of siblings for him to be lost in?

It just seemed like every time I caught a bit of the programme it was something else awful that had happened to him. And he didn't seem to have options. I wanted him to be doing something to take himself out of all the worrying about how he looked and presented and what people thought.

ashtrayheart · 11/11/2019 21:11

Totally agree with @Thingybob - I think mumsnet gets very confused sometimes.

Creepster · 11/11/2019 21:14

BBC has never stopped promoting the exploitation of children.

Chiochan · 11/11/2019 21:15

I work in a secondary school in London where girls are not allowed to wear trousers. However cold, however wet, however many times they are assulted with hands up skirts, no trousers, not ever. Sent home to change is any girl dares, in 2019. But yay lets celebrate boys in dresses, its sooo progressive dont you know.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 11/11/2019 21:18

I'm not confused. I think drag is shit. I think the kids who are the subjects can't properly consent to this kind of intrusive programming and I think that I don't want my nine year old exposed to stupid ideas about gender roles and sexuality presented with all the subtlety and sensitivity of a Cillit Bang advert.

Herland · 11/11/2019 21:20

@ashtrayheart, you do realise that mumsnet is not one person... Or even the fabled hive mind. Is it really that surprising to you that different posters have different opinions on certain topics?

Herland · 11/11/2019 21:23

You've hit the nail on the head @ShesDressedInBlackAgain. This for me IS about sex and sexuality, and while I am not completely horrified about young people exploring these parts of their identity, I am horrified that in this case the exploration has become public property.

ashtrayheart · 11/11/2019 21:43

The feminist board is pretty much groupthink. The rest of mumsnet is a bit more varied.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 11/11/2019 21:45

The feminist board is pretty much groupthink. The rest of mumsnet is a bit more varied.

That's because it's a specific board, you tend to get a lot of similar posters. It's like saying the SN section has a lot of "Issues with schools", or the Primary education section has "A load posts from the teachers point of view".

ScrimshawTheSecond · 11/11/2019 21:51

he shouldn't be paraded on TV

I think that's pretty much the biggest problem Any child who is recorded, broadcast and held up for scrutiny. It's always been exploitative, it's becoming more and more so. What is online stays online, for ever.

And at what point does the public persona or 'brand' (no child should need or have either) start to influence and control the life of the child? Does the media demand more engaging content? How do they generate that? Can the child quit?

Creepster · 11/11/2019 21:53

Why are there so many Feminists in Feminism chat? It's a mystery.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 11/11/2019 22:04

Pop over to the Dog house and tell them you want a rescue dog but you have a baby so you want to be sure that you get one that doesn't bite and we'll see how varied the responses are.

Or Adoption - say you could give a good home to a neurotypical baby with no possibility of SEN.

Or tell Style and Beauty you liked that pink M and S dress last year.

I'm totally waiting for the documentary on Mr Tumble's 'Drag Life' on Cbeebies. Following Justin as he becomes his 'authentic self' Aunt Polly.

Although I feel like 'Aunt Polly' isn't an edgy enough name though these days, it's neither hypersexualised nor misogynistic so they will have to have a think on that one....

SirVixofVixHall · 11/11/2019 22:19

My dd was telling me about this. She is 12. Her face ! Just horrified.

hazeyjane · 11/11/2019 22:24

Aunt Polyamorous?

Woman's Hour today:

The TV show, RuPaul's Drag Race, is half way through, so what do we think about drag queens these days? Do women see them as misogynistic or pure fun ? Historian and performer Rose Collis, drag king Adam All and artist Victoria Sin discuss.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 12/11/2019 08:48

Don’t like ‘em. As a colleague discovered yesterday when he started his ‘get your engines started girl!’ routine at my desk. I wasn’t having a good day...

andyoldlabour · 12/11/2019 08:53

A gradual, relentless breaking down of standards, where will it end?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 12/11/2019 08:54

I know. Can’t say tho..

Well that sounds like a balanced panel. I wonder what they will conclude.

Lumene · 12/11/2019 10:42

Annie Lennox is a fabulous gender non conforming singer.

Sexualising kids eg in drag shows or beauty pageants is not good.

nauticant · 12/11/2019 10:44

It turns out that Rose Collis possesses common sense, Adam All (fnarr!) is wishy washy, and Victoria Sin (fnarr!) is all about the gender fluid and the non-binary and how drags helps gay people
