I think this is a really good thread for seeing many of the questions that trans rights activists need to answer, all in one place.

Possibly useful to use with the uninformed/unthinking. How will they respond?

OP posts:
TinselAngel · 03/11/2019 11:14

Good questions- the answer to all of which is: because male entitlement.

jenthelibrarian · 03/11/2019 12:35

Bookmarked!

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 03/11/2019 12:38

Excellent thread.

Deliriumoftheendless · 03/11/2019 12:48

The last one is very interesting - “we need to have difficult conversations”. I agree. And I know that people (in general) are afraid of difficult conversations (for all subjects) but only by being brave enough to do that can real solutions be achieved.

How on earth do the “no debate” shouters think everyone else gets on with life? Difficult conversations revolve around relationships, jobs, children, health... nothing gets better by not ignoring the debates even if the conversation is upsetting or distressing for some.

CranberriesChoccy · 03/11/2019 13:11

Likely will see a lot of accusations of transphobia for even asking some of those questions.

HandsOffMyRights · 03/11/2019 13:18

Excellent.
Tinsel nails it though.

boatyardblues · 03/11/2019 13:29

Why would you assume that these vastly different groups have anything in common? You do (you say it is gender identity) yet you medicalise the kids and let the middle aged men LARP as women often with no treatment. This makes no sense

I can’t argue with this one.

realitycalling · 03/11/2019 13:29

Thank you Ben. Great questions. Tumbleweed will be the response sadly.

CranberriesChoccy · 03/11/2019 13:35

Perhaps RMcK will paricipate with made-up bollocks, what with their expertise on not knowing you're talking about.

lionheart · 03/11/2019 15:04

Excellent questions.

JellySlice · 03/11/2019 15:24

CranberriesChoccy - I think you'll find they're not made up. What RMcK might actually say, OTOH...

CranberriesChoccy · 03/11/2019 16:42

@JellySlice 😂

Cooroo · 03/11/2019 17:26

These are great. Copied into my Notes.

NotTerfNorCis · 03/11/2019 18:00

Great questions, and I see a Twitter TRA has put a lot of effort into answering them.

Quote from Joss:

What am I transitioning to and from?

From: A depression and anxiety crippled identity mandated by mainstream society and patriarchal structures.

To: A free and expressive identity that allows me to embrace what I am naturally drawn to, without censure.

So pretty much what many GC feminists say they would like to see happen for males with GD, but without the extra dash of patriarchal bullshit that says that such a person doesn't count as a real man and is therefore a woman. Yeah, totally progressive Hmm

freethegenders · 03/11/2019 19:14

To be fair I think if you read through, Joss isn't claiming that makes them female or claiming to have the same experience as other women.

It seems to be more about established definitions society has, and their experience of moving through them in other peoples judgement, just by doing what comes naturally and instinctively.

NotTerfNorCis · 03/11/2019 19:41

freethegenders but isn't that defining 'woman' by social stereotypes rather then biological reality?

OldCrone · 03/11/2019 19:59

Joss has posted the Endocrine Society position statement which is quite a favourite of TRAs. Joss says "endocrinologists consider gender identity to be innate, as much as sexual characteristics are." Are endocrinologists considered to be experts about the existence of "gender identity" and its origins?

freethegenders · 03/11/2019 20:41

but isn't that defining 'woman' by social stereotypes rather then biological reality?

Or Joss is having that definition imposed on them, the definition of a trans woman is a biological male who lives as a woman, that is a pre-existing definition trans people fall into by default.
Trans people have definitions imposed on them by society, they dont invent these definitions.

In another culture it may be two-spirit, these definitions are invented and imposed by majority rule, always.

OldCrone · 03/11/2019 20:44

How does a man 'live as a woman'?

Unnnndeadcake · 03/11/2019 20:45

Excellent!

Rachelsfatarse · 03/11/2019 20:50

Joss is talking out of their arse about endocrinologists. They deal with bodies and hormones, plain old fashioned biology. They are not gender doctors, they are doctors of the endocrine system.

Happityhap · 03/11/2019 20:50

Perhaps trans people should make more effort not to be constrained by stereotypes, instead of claiming that they Are Women & Are Men.

NotTerfNorCis · 03/11/2019 21:04

Trans people have definitions imposed on them by society, they dont invent these definitions

To put it another way, why would someone who is biologically male believe they were female, and how would they expect to be recognised socially as female, without making use of social/cultural stereotypes?

Justhadathought · 03/11/2019 21:11

In another culture it may be two-spirit, these definitions are invented and imposed by majority rule, always

Don't be daft! Biological sex is not an invention - it is a reality.

What is an 'invention' and 'imposition' is a series of rigid & prescriptive behaviours and 'likes' for each biological sex.

I'm certainly not one for holding scientific orthodoxy up for worship - but ya' know: somethings just are.......
