Labour want to clarify that changing one's legal sex does not alter their biological sex

Clarify the distinction between legal and biological sex. I think it is in the best interests of society as a whole if the law is based on facts and words used in the law have their ordinary meaning in English. I would like to see it clarified that a change of legal sex does not alter a person's biological sex, which remains relevant in some circumstances.

This is good isn't it?

Dawn Butler still going on about the need to change the GRA on tv last night...she actually said LGBTQI ... everybody should be their true selves...no change there I think

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 31/10/2019 08:01

Do they, though? Has Magic Granddad finally acknowledged the women who've been hoping against hope that he'll get off his arse and listen to their concerns about this? I mean, that would be lovely, but some proof would be nice.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 31/10/2019 08:03

Someone should tweet at Dawn that she's failing intersectionality by leaving out parts of the acronym, just because I want to see how many letters she can be persuaded to add before even she admits that it's all getting a bit silly.

hipsterfun · 31/10/2019 08:48

I’m sure Dawn will be mindful of that.

You know the + at the end of LGBTQQWERTU+?

Does one say It out loud as plus , or does one mime it like a YMCA tribute act?

HandsOffMyRights · 31/10/2019 08:55

Actions speak louder than words.

If you speak to transsexuals, which some posters often say they have, then you will know that when they get the operation or some other treatments the doctors make them sign to say they acknowledge that it won’t change their actual biological sex. Seems clear.

Ereshkigal · 31/10/2019 09:10

Well it rather depends if you've had that very specific conversation with the people you've spoken to, doesn't it? Hmm

GetbusywiththeFizzee · 31/10/2019 09:11

Liebour continuing the shitty lies set by Bliar and his ilk.
Tories aren’t much better btw but I always thought of them as self serving anyway.

Does that still happen? I've seen some older transsexuals on here say that happened to them 20 or 30 years ago, but I'm not sure if it's still the case now.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 31/10/2019 09:32

Whether or not Labour acknowledge changing legal sex does not change sex in any meaningful sense is irrelevant if Labour are not going to enact policies making it a strict legal requirement to provide single sex, as determined at conception and observed at birth, spaces in all situations where people are vulnerable due to being in a state of undress, a state of unconsciousness or where any physical contact is involved.

Saying yes we know these people aren't women but we're going to insist you strip off in front of them anyway is not going to win me over.

MockersthefeMANist · 31/10/2019 09:59

To claim that it is possible to have a "legal sex" different from your biological sex is as crazy as saying you can have a legal age not the same as your chronological age. The latter would in no way alter your rights as a child under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the former would in no way override the UN UNIVERSAL Declaration of Human Rights.

Melroses · 31/10/2019 11:31

Ah so someone has suggested a fact to Labour and we're just waiting to see if they might ratify it?

Ok.

I think I will get on with the gardening - may take a while.

There is a lot of sense in the proposal, but I am not sure Labour will notice.

We seem to be in a state where it is imagined that changing legal sex is the same as changing biological sex, and everyone is going around with their eyes closed and their fingers in their ears pretending they can't tell the difference.

PencilsInSpace · 31/10/2019 12:02

It's just a forum post isn't it?

www.policyforum.labour.org.uk/commissions/reform-of-the-gender-recognition-act

It's a good post and has two supportive comments and none calling the OP a T**F which is very encouraging - but it's just a forum post. I am assuming any labour member can sign up there and post?

DickKerrLadies · 31/10/2019 17:09

As others have said, clarifying is one thing (if they actually do it, that is) but unless they're going to do something with that wacky fact it's meaningless bollocks isn't it?

A bit like Boris Johnson saying he's going to announce a temporary ban on fracking (just before an election, how strange!) but hasn't mentioned doing anything to change how fracking was forced on the people of Lancashire by the government against the wishes of the councils and the people who live here.

jackiebrisset · 01/11/2019 09:29

Jeremy Corbyn said this:

"We’ve also got to reject the divisions that some are trying to sow between trans people and others in the LGBT+ community. In the past month, it has been reported that hate crimes against trans people are up 81%. This has been made worse by the Government’s delay in reforming the Gender Recognition Act, but it’s what happens when there is a concerted campaign by some in the media. That horrible anti-trans campaign mirrors attacks against gay men and lesbians in the 1980s. We must stand in solidarity with the trans community so they can live their lives with the dignity and respect they deserve."

Jeremy Corbyn Is a misogynistic wanker.
