Glinner is asking why more don’t speak out

On Twitter

I’ll be away from MN a couple of days but I notice so far no one has said to him that we fear losing jobs, amongst other things.

I came off Twitter but thought others here might wish to reply.

On other forums you get called a transphobe or t**f for not agreeing that women can have penises or that it's unfair for women to have to compete against biological males in professional sport. It is denying their existence apparently. The only thing being denied is the exitstence of their own penis by themselves.

AssassinatedBeauty · 30/10/2019 15:45

I am surprised he doesn't realise why. Just look at Allison Bailey for an idea of the storm you can expect if you speak out.

Deathgrip · 30/10/2019 15:51

Perhaps he hasn’t noticed the difference in reactions when men speak up vs women speaking up...?

I am a big fan of his work, but this question stinks of male privilege.

WomanBornNotWorn · 30/10/2019 15:58

Fear.

Losing jobs
Losing friends
Alienating family
Damaging personal and professional reputation
Risking losing children when education, social and medical services appear to be against parents
Being banned from social media platforms
Being doxxed
Being insulted and labelled - the old list included 'witch' and 'frigid', but the new one's much longer
Rape threats
Death threats
Intimidating face to face behaviour
Being punched

What WomanBornNotWornSaid

I spoke out at my child's school. I felt ostracised and like I'd been branded a homophobe for questioning the content of Stonewall and Diversity Role Models' 'teaching' materials regarding teaching gender ideology as fact.

HandsOffMyRights · 30/10/2019 16:12

I wonder what Sharon Horgan (co-writer of Motherland with Graham and his wife) thinks of all this, having known what Graham and his wife have been subjected to for wrongspeak.

NeurotrashWarrior · 30/10/2019 16:13

This.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/10/2019 17:13

More who?

Women try to, but get abused/banned etc on many platforms.

Maybe he meant more men, esp high profile blokes? There are some sportsmen putting their heads above the parapet now. Maybe the others don't really care that much about women's rights and safeguarding children.

Campervan69 · 30/10/2019 17:15

I think he means more high profile men such as himself. I bet no-one he speaks to has swallowed the cool aid but it's amaxing how many men don't care enough to put themselves in the firing line.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 30/10/2019 17:20

I think he means more high profile men such as himself.

The same reason as other "normal" people don't, can you imagine for example Robert Webb getting work at the BBC if he didn't retract his tweet about mermaids?

NotTerfNorCis · 30/10/2019 17:36

I wouldn't lose friends over it. Most people I know think gender ideology is a load of rubbish. But it could make me a target for some vicious harassment and it could threaten my job, even though what I do has nothing to do with gender politics. So like most of us I have to be careful.

MockersthefeMANist · 30/10/2019 17:42

The film&TV power game is toxic. "Everybody" knew about Saville and Weinstein. Polanski got a lifetime award and a standing ovation at the Oscars, (and Whoopi Goldberg said "It wasn't rape-rape..")

Money doesn't talk. It shouts in your face.

SirVixofVixHall · 30/10/2019 17:46

Did Robert Webb retract his tweet re Mermaids ? How depressing.

HandsOffMyRights · 30/10/2019 17:48

Yes he did Sir Vix.
I expected more.

greenapplesred12 · 30/10/2019 17:48

I had a couple of comments deleted on a forum, basically for stating in clear, factual terms (with no reference to trans people) the biological differences between male and female humans. The moderator said she'd removed 'transphobic' comments. The world is absolutely fucking crazy right now. If stating clear and obvious science fact is transphobic and can get you deleted, what will happen if you question the wisdom of puberty blockers or dare to say that trans women are males who should respect the equality act of 2010 and stay away from female only spaces?

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 30/10/2019 17:59

Did Robert Webb retract his tweet re Mermaids ? How depressing.

About 24 hours after he made it.

greenapplesred12 · 30/10/2019 18:02

yeah, Mermaids tweeted him and asked him to have a chat with them. No idea what the outcome of that was, but I noticed a few of his luvvie chums tweet their disapproval to his original comment. Maybe he panicked and worried about his career. Can't really blame him.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 30/10/2019 18:07

Apparently In Canada the CW TV network contracts actually state that the signatory has to support "diversity", i assume other TV networks have similar restrictions on what their stars can post on the internet.

TemporaryPermanent · 30/10/2019 18:13

I dont think it's fair to say Glinner has male privilege on this. He's had the police turning up on his doorstep and an unending twitter shitshow despite pretty much having to be on social media for his job. He could very easily lose income and work for what he's saying - perhaps he has already. I dont have to be on social media and I was scared of going to the WPUK meeting though nothing happened. The biggest public stance I've taken is not picking up a rainbow lanyard at work because I dont think I deserve to because I'm so conflicted about this issue. That and pulling out of a section of work which I felt unable psychologically to cope with, for which the consequences were... zero. I think glinner is a bit if a hero to say the least.

SirVixofVixHall · 30/10/2019 18:43

Glinner has absolutely stuck his neck out at great personal cost. He is a brave and thoroughly decent man.

greenapplesred12 · 30/10/2019 18:49

yeah, Glinner has been heroic in his relentless refusal to back down to the bullies. We need more like him!

Karabair · 30/10/2019 18:58

Glinner is privately wealthy and pretty much unassailable in his career with Father Ted under his belt. Nobody can take that away from him. So he is in a much safer position than most to speak out and speak freely. Still great however that someone as high profile as him has spoken up.

greenapplesred12 · 30/10/2019 19:01

there are other celebs with vast vast wealth, near billionaire status, with gender critical views, who would really help the gender critical movement by doing a Glinner, but you've got to be very very brave to risk doing so.

ChattyLion · 30/10/2019 20:43

I am really grateful to him. Glinner has nothing to gain from sticking his neck out for women. He could have done a Robert Webb a very long time ago and saved himself a shitload of hassle and personal expense but he hasn’t. He’s a mensch.

We have everything to gain from having a prominent celebrity supporter with a zillion followers who is active on twitter, and who is male and who because of those things he speaks to a different and much more massive public audience than most of us on here. (Sorry I just presumed everyone’s celebrity status level there Grin)

Destinysdaughter · 30/10/2019 21:17

I met Glinner after a Women's Place meeting a few months ago in the pub afterwards. I asked him directly why he had got involved in this and he said because it was just bullshit. I have so much respect for him. He's a genuinely caring man with a lot of integrity. He has nothing to gain and a lot to lose by speaking up about this as evidenced by the amount of abuse he's received both on Twitter and in real life.

I wish more men with a platform would speak out about this but it seems like the only ones who do are the ones who are rich and powerful enough to not have to worry about the consequences, Ricky Gervais, Piers Morgan. Really can't think of many others...
