They have both been vocal about this issue. Is it recent?

Kelly Holmes was pretty vocal on the topic when McKinnon went after Martina Navratilova. I’m pretty sure Daley Thompson went to the Fair Play for Women seminar with Sharron Davies.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/10/2019 13:50

I guess they are joining the voices of Sharron and Martina et al. A top athlete who has worked their backsides off since they were old enough to run/swim/hit a ball must feel especially aggrieved when they see something they perceive as unfair.

I remember the Olympics when it was alleged that women athletes from the former eastern block countries were being doped - and women athletes referred to 'being sure they heard men in the ladies changing rooms' - and they were called sore losers and bad sports. It was only when medals and records were revoked that people listened.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 21/10/2019 13:52

Thompson occupies a sort of was a figure from my childhood who I always instinctively liked position in my head so it's been really heartening to see him speaking out on this. The more athletes who join in the better.

I know there's always the occasional Lance Armstrong but I think most athletes care deeply about fair competition and will thus find the inherent unfairness of mediocre male athletes being allowed to compete against women because they can't hack it in their own division deeply unfair. It makes a mockery of everything sport is supposed to be about, like chucking a heavyweight in the ring with a welterweight and pretending that's a fair fight.

midcenturylegs · 21/10/2019 13:59

Yes, like Blythe and his stats for playing both men and women's cricket this summer. Resonates very personally.

Former rugby international Daniel Leo (@DanLeo82 on Twitter) is another sportsman who has been very vocal on this issue. His sister lost out on a place in a volleyball team due to a transwoman being given a spot so he knows the potential impact of these policies.

I think he peaked a couple of other rugby players too.

VickyEadieofThigh · 21/10/2019 19:10

Holmes, followed by Thompson, has been vocal on this for some time.

And she won't be harassed into shutting up.

AnyFucker · 21/10/2019 19:11

Keep it coming. Keep it coming.

I can't believe that choosing not to put an arm around McKinnon is 'bad sportsmanship' as far as McKinnon is concerned..... Shock

You can force others to force them to say the words. You can force others to force them to compete. You can't force anyone to act happy about it or pretend to a standard you approve of. Trying to coerce them into touching you when they don't want to and framing NOT doing so as blameworthy? That seems on the creepy, inappropriate and violating boundaries side.

Bit like insisting lesbians learn to cope with penises and the whole utter contempt for anyone born with female biology really.

EsmeShelby · 21/10/2019 23:22

Some one put a picture of the same age group men's competition up (they look far fitter than Rach) and they are NOT all standing with arms around each other.

EsmeShelby · 21/10/2019 23:24

I suppose my point is, if the guys get to stand aloof why do the women need to cuddle up? It is infantilising.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/10/2019 23:25

I’m old school Scottish. We aren’t all touchy Feedly. Even if I was...

I think our favourite cyclist has been educating a LOT of people this past week. I’ve seen lots of professional athletes saying this is outrageous and the end of women’s sport. The TRAs seem rather quiet.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 22/10/2019 08:55

A few male athletes on twitter saying ‘oh can I be a woman now then?’

drspouse · 22/10/2019 08:57

Indeed they can apparently.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 22/10/2019 08:59

I’m going to be a cat then. Or a bear - I used to say when I was little that I wanted to be a polar bear.

SirVixofVixHall · 22/10/2019 09:06

This makes me so ragey. Bloody Peter Tatchell was wading in with the most ridiculous comments about some people having longer legs etc, so what is the problem ?
I really feel for the young women working their arses off all through their teens with gruelling training programmes, only to get “beaten” by some bloke who wouldn’t even be in the top 50 of men.
It is ridiculous, and it is cheating. Almost everyone can see that.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 22/10/2019 09:10

He is a funny one. He says some odd things though.

LangCleg · 22/10/2019 09:14

midcenturylegs - you might like to read up on the WPUK/FPFW meeting about the impending destruction of women's sport that took place in July. Sharron Davies spoke and Daley Thompson attended:

Thank goodness. Thought this was going to be about that swimmer and his surrogate baby.
