Inspiring women to show DD13?

peachycore · 20/10/2019 09:53

Hello Smile
My DD13 is homeschooled due to bullying at old school - she is living quite a sad life at the moment (health issues and obsessed with celebrities, nothing to do) we have been fighting for a place at a special school (she has very high functioning ASD) and in two weeks we will get information etc.
She went through a poetry phase and discovered some wonderful women that were very brave (think Mary Shelley and her mum, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Emily Dickinson) and learnt about them and read their poetry. She is now past this phase and appears to get worse and use every day. She has severe social anxiety, hates going outside and just wants to do her own thing.

Any inspiring women that I could show to her as role models? She loves learning about new people Smile

There are books by Kate pankhurst available on Amazon -if i recall
Correctly one of them is called “fantastic women who changed the world”

If she loves learning about new people could you set her a task to research some inspiring womem? Shd shouldnt be spoon fed at 13. Try asking her for reasons they inspired her. Suggest looking in her area of interest, authors, sports women, music, actors, whatever she's into. Try to get her to seek stuff out, its how she will develop.

The Careergirls YouTube channel has lots of interesting women talking about their lives and careers.

All the best to your DD.

Nadiya from Bake Off suffers anxiety and panic attacks, and has talked about that.

The programme has expired on iPlayer, but you might be able to find more about her.

Women writers, women artists? Agree you should get her to research them herself.

If she has nothing to do, could she get creative - drawing, writing, gardening (it’s time to plant bulbs), sewing, cooking, photography. Anything that will take her focus outwards.

Having read your other thread, I think IWayOrAnother has the right approach.
Set her a task - to be done during her 'home schooling' hours. Expect to see some outcomes. Maybe something connected with women and sport?

Hilary and Chelsea Clinton have just published a book called 'Gutsy women' (or similar). Have a look.

the Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls books feature lots of women who defied convention and stereotypes to achieve amazing things, and from throughout the ages from Cleopatra to Beyoncé

there's only a page on each, but they're great to dip into and cover so many different area - lots of inspirational women (and girls)

Iirc theres also a story about a boy who became a girl in the book so kinda makes a.mockery of the whole thing.

As well as the ones mentioned here already I actually find Harry Dunn’s mum quite inspirational (boy who was run over and killed by the American lady who the claimed diplomatic immunity and fled)
She has in a calm and dignified way stood up to Raab, Johnson and even rushed to play ball with Trump, who is supposedly the most powerful man in the world. She has continued to fight for justice for Harry despite just being a largely ordinary woman who has found herself in a awful situation and hasn’t caved in to pressure from some very powerful people, who would rather she just go away
Obviously Harry’s Dad is doing the same but you asked about women
I told my 10 year old DS about The Dunn’s and said that if they could stand up to the most powerful man in the world while on his turf after being effectively ambushed then you can stand up to anyone

At that age, I fell pretty hard for the Suffragettes. The Pankhursts obviously but Constance Markievicz is definitely one of my favourites. She was the first woman elected to Westminister but didn't take her seat because she stood for Sinn Fein. She led a fascinating life.

Poetry: Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde
Painting: Frida Kahlo. I have a lovely book which I did buy in Mexico but I'm sure it's available here which stuff about her life, her paintings and cooking recipes in it. That might be an idea, get her to learn about specific women, where they came from, what they ate and how to cook it. Plus if they were creative in some fashion to attempt to recreate, i.e. poetry/painting in their style.

Also have you looked at the Mighty Girl blog? www.amightygirl.com/

I've used it to find some lovely books for Dd.

Nadiya from Bake Off suffers anxiety and panic attacks, and has talked about that.

She may be a better role model for your DD than some of the fantastic women who very few girls could hope to emulate.

Have her research women in NASA, there are some great articles on their website about how women have contributed to the space program.

waltzingparrot · 20/10/2019 13:28

Do you reckon you could get her listen to some of the back catalogue of Radio 4's Desert Island Discs on the BBC Sounds app. There are some amazing inspiring life stories of all sorts of women on there. Some of the most interesting ones are of people you've never heard of.

Wendy Cope the poet is on there and I recently listened to Emily Eavis, the Glastonbury festival organiser/ daughter of founder. If she doesn't like their music choices, she can whizz through them.

Hidden Figures, both the film and the book, is an interesting insight into some of the women, especially black women, involved in Nasa in the early days. It focuses on the human 'computers' who did the computational mathematics around space flight.
