Don't know what is meant by "cunty kind". Not interested in this. Women only public transport though , I 'd go for, yep. I remember a big row between Labour MPs , mainly Stella Creasy, if I recall correctly, against Chris Williamson when he suggested to have a consultation on offering women-only train carriages as a 'safe space' to protect women after big rise in reported sexual assaults on trains. Stella was very angry. So we're other women MPs, journalists and women's charities. Personally as someone who travels a lot on trains in the evening/night, and have had my own bad experiences at any time of day actually I was all for it. Also for guards to be on trains.
"“It would be worth consulting about it,” Williamsom told PoliticsHome. “It was pooh-poohed, but these statistics seem to indicate there is some merit in examining that.
“Complemented with having more guards on trains, it would be a way of combating these attacks, which have seen a very worrying increase in the past few years.”
Williamson said he was not wedded to the idea “but it may create a safe space” though he stressed women would not be obliged to use it."
Labour MP Stella Creasy also said she did not welcome the revival of the idea. “Can we make all carriages safe for all passengers rather than restricting where we can go?” she tweeted.
“Doesn’t keep women safe to restrict their movements – it normalises attacks. We need to be clear they [the attackers] are problem, not women’s seating plans.”
Jess Phillips, Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley, called the policy an “absolutely terrible idea”, : “It is essentially giving up on trying to prosecute assaults. Also, men should be incredibly annoyed by suggestion they can’t control themselves.
“Sexual violence isn’t about urges, it’s about power. If you take your feminist cues from Saudi Arabia, you’ve gone wrong.”
- Well Stella, if you read what he said, women would not have to use it, and it's about restricting where men can go, not women. I do not think it normalises attacks or makes people think the attackers are not the problem. of course all carriages should be safe for everyone, how are you going to do this then? Hopefully you've sorted it in a couple of days before I'm on a late train? Also I disagree with Jess's assessment. It doesn't say anything about giving up on prosecution. Also, if you have to wait to prosecution to act, it's already happened. And what about things that don't merit prosecution but are still harassment? Yes it's about power, it's also about urges. www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/23/shadow-minister-faces-backlash-over-women-only-train-carriage-idea
They mocked and attacked him so hard over the mere suggestion of a consultation with women about the idea. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-41028234
I just want to be able to feel relaxed and not on edge on a train , and public transport in general. Everywhere actually. Not having to "monitor" what men around me are doing, without looking them of course, no eye contact. Not saying anything about walking anywhere after dark because pffft that's out of the question. Mind you a woman was killed in a random attack, disappeared off the street in broad daylight, summer afternoon, near me. Body found nearby. Random murder.
