Call to support women MPs in face of abuse and death threats to family

Could I ask people on this board tonight to look in at the Westministenders threads on the Brexit boards, regarding the death threats as the op states. Jo Swinson's child has been threatened, Anna Soubry's mother has been threatened. We have a Prime minister who is using inflammatory language appearing to support and enable such threats. Women need to stand together against this upsurge of threats against our representatives.

I don't often start threads on Mumsnet and I don't think I'll be able to keep a close eye on this one, but the current events in Parliament are truly shocking me. The Prime Minister today, after that use of language, openly stated that he would not abide by legislation passed by the House of Commons.

So you are OK with the Prime Minister using the political rhetoric of 'surrender' which has actually been used as a dog whistle for real life political violence and led to the deaths of thousands right here in the UK within living memory (and which continues to do so on occasion)?

You may think that's an appropriate was for a Prime Minister to behave. I do not.

TheElementsSong · 26/09/2019 14:42

You people ? Who are they?

Have some respect, please. The squirrel pointer is, remember, a master of accurate wordsmithery, seeing as they're a lawyer and all, with greater expertise than the Supreme Court.

You seem to be trying to re-direct attention away from one sort of hate by pointing out another. Neither kind of hate, when it starts to have practical effects, is acceptable. Death threats are death threats, abuse is abuse.

We communicate using language. We organise the world around us using language. We recreate the world around us using language and interacting together. It makes a huge difference whether we say 'I disagree with the court judgement' or 'the court judges are enemies of the people'. Quite who 'the people' are I'm not entirely sure, I know a few representatives of the 65 million in this country and they are all quite different, but that's another story.

In very practical terms, what can we do to support those women??

I know Ruth Smeeth, she’s involved in our local armed forces charity, she had to have police protection when in London due to constant death threats.

And today there has been an incident at Jess Phillip's office. A man trying to gain entry. Why is it always men?

Funny that that person was (rightly) arrested but when a bunch of labour activists including a labour councillor, incited a mob to bang on the windows of a women’s meeting, yelling, intimidating the occupants and residents above, for the duration of the meeting, the police stood by.

Helmetbymidnight · 26/09/2019 17:43

i cant see how anyone can defend boris on this. genuinely, dont get it.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 26/09/2019 17:50

I don’t defend Boris.

Helmetbymidnight · 26/09/2019 17:52

good. what an arsehole- absolutely indefensible behaviour from a pm.

absolutely divisive and dismissive.

Helmetbymidnight · 26/09/2019 17:57

I must admit the lack of basic policing afforded to ordinary women trying to meet in peace did cross my mind yesterday when the “dangerous, inflammatory” nature of the word “surrender” was being a expounded for hours.

The trans thing is only a symptom of a wider attitude towards women. There was an outcry about what went on in the House of Commons while media has turned a blind eye to Labour Party groups and councillors stoking up hatred towards women on the ground. It is all over the shop: EHRC writing guidelines that say girls must give way to boys feelings. The welsh assembly refusing to admit they never considered the impact of policy change on women it will impact significantly. The Scottish Government deciding gender equality will be met if half the men on a public board had stereotypically female names on their gas bill. The Green Party and pride whipping up hatred of women. Women’s groups finding themselves unable to meet. The police ignoring the real safety of women and girls while arresting people for seeking to defend women’s rights....

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 19:54

Perhaps because it suits the narrative. Keep people pitted against each other.

What do you mean? Perhaps because what suits whose narrative?

We have a potential Far Right government. Look at the US and the attach on reproductive rights. If anyone thinks if they consolidate power JRM wouldn't ne the first to table anti abortion legislation they are wrong

I’m confused. You think I’m supportive of Rees Mogg?

I think we need to stop being so either/or about this and demand better from all of our politicians, quite honestly. Because if the choice is that we either get a far right government or we get a Labour government who casually tells the 17 million to go swivel, I’m really not looking forward to the next few decades.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 26/09/2019 19:55

Not symptom. The trans thing is a mechanism by which the hatred of women is being expressed.

And it wasnt the word surrender that was the main issue. It was the request to tone down language by the PM as there is a direct impact on MPs especially women.

Well I wish someone would definitively tell me which of the PM’s words were the issue. Yesterday “surrender” and “humbug” were cited. Which aren’t great but I don’t see that you can build a case that he’s responsible for death threats based on that.

I’m starting to feel like the girl who can’t see the magic eye picture here.

StrangeLookingParasite · 26/09/2019 20:01

You people don’t need my help to make yourselves look ridiculous.
Carry on. It amuses me.

Sorry, and you were who again?

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 20:03

So who is orchestrating it? Who does this suit?

Go on, tell me.

Is this a Russian bot, Cambridge analytica type theory?
