As above really, I know there's been a thread before but I can't find it now!

After some suggestions of charities where I can be certain any donation is going specifically to girls/women. UK or international :)

PM me for 2 organisations in Kolkata. I have visited both, feminist run in the red light areas, working with children to provide alternatives to prostitution and pimping, also setting up small business for the women to do the same. One is difficult to get money from abroad to at present , as they await re registration to receive money from abroad but should be fixed soon. Can't post details on here sadly.

Vancouver Rape Crisis - is still going despite years of trying to shut it down, last week or the week before someone nailed a dead rat to the door of a building where they held a meeting.

Look for the small charities, Oxfam and others have lost their way.

Yes, as PP said please don’t be tempted by the ‘glossy’ charities advocating for women and girls, I worked for one and the waste of money is heartbreaking

newtlover · 26/08/2019 22:40

beyond fgm
this organisation works with girls and women in Kenya to end fgm
pm me if you want more info
all money is spent on the cause

their fb page

The Women's Holiday Centre in Lancashire provides affordable holidays to women and girls. They received a lot of stick from TRAs on their FB page for not catering to transwomen.

There is also The Freedom Programme, but I think they are self-funding.

Mumofstar · 26/08/2019 22:54

Girlguiding

BingBongSong · 27/08/2019 13:32

I forgot to mention www.kiva.org, which is a microfinancing charity. You can choose to donate to individual women or women's groups. When the money is repaid, you can reuse it for lending again.

I've made 45 loans so far over the years, and received complete repayment on 44. Here's my lending profile.

Vancouver Rape Relief is the one I donate to. I've also donated to the Glasgow Rape Crisis Centre

I work a lot with the women's sector and the charities that I think do a good job supporting girls and women and haven't succumbed to woke "self identified women" stuff are: Nia, Southhall Black Sisters, Ashiana, Maternity Action, Abortion Rights (although they don't do work directly supporting women and they have put out the odd dodgy tweet), Centre for Women's Justice, Refuge, and the Freedom Programme. I'm sure there are lots of others but those are just some of the ones I've come across that I rate.

WhereAreWeNow · 27/08/2019 16:40

Oh and Women for Refugee Women too.

endofthelinefinally · 27/08/2019 16:41

Girl guiding is mixed sex now and ignores safeguarding.

Lysistrataknowsherstuff · 27/08/2019 16:46

There's the Abortion Support Network - helping women in Gibraltar, Isle of Man, NI, Ireland and Malta access abortions in the UK.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 27/08/2019 17:49

Thank you for the link to kiva.org BingBongSong.

What a wonderful resource, I remember reading some research years ago that showed micro loans make a huge difference to women's lives, and that (compared to male borrowers) more benefits is passed down to their children and the local community.

To have a web site that lists a load of different women and women's groups, and what they want to use the loan for is fascinating. I just created an account and made my first loan. I love the idea of being able to loan it to someone else again later.

FFS women aren't allowed to have anything for themselves 😡 With all the organisations that support TW, why don't they have their own holiday set-up? Not to mention refuges and counselling services.

Gwynfluff · 27/08/2019 19:06

This one is worthwhile

www.freedomfromfistula.org.uk/

I don’t imagine anyone ever identifies into having an obstetric fistula

ValancyRedfern · 27/08/2019 21:10

Definitely NIA.

WhereAreWeNow · 28/08/2019 09:07

Lysistrata ASN do brilliant work but they're frustrating in their use of "pregnant people" and "people who need abortions" and the director, Mara Clarke, made Twitter comments about "TERFs". Really disappointing. But I don't dispute that they do great work which is more important than their woke language.

Babdoc · 28/08/2019 09:10

I support Womankind as one of my charities. I hope it isn’t considered one of the “glossy” ones mentioned upthread!

OhHolyJesus · 28/08/2019 09:16

This is a really useful thread OP, it's basically a list for me to turn to when I feel frustrated and want to donate to truly women only services. Thank you x

www.wateraid.org/uk/

WaterAid, becaus it's a crying shame in a rich world that we (in one of the richest places on the planet) have not made sure that those poorer than ourselves have even the basics like water.

And it's the girls who miss education to fetch. And the women who have mines than they might otherwise choose, just in the hope some will survive the dirty water to reach adulthood.

This is one of the biggest, and most life-threatening feminist issues there is globally.

QOFE · 28/08/2019 09:31

Thanks, this is all brilliant! And glad it is useful to other posters too :)

This is a great thread. I've made a note of a number of them for future donations. Kiva sounds like a great initiative.

BingBongSong · 28/08/2019 13:47

I'm glad some of you have found the Kiva link useful! In the past I've asked for Kiva gift cards for Christmas/birthday presents, as I'd much rather have them. So in total I think I've loaned around $130, but this has generated $1100 in loans.

It's usually safer to loan to groups rather than individuals, in terms of getting your money back, and do look out for the length of the loan, as some of them are very long. I like to filter by country too - have made quite a few loans to women in Palestine and my most recent was to a woman in the Philippines.
