Do any of these 'woke' companies do even the tiniest bit of research before jumping on the transwagon? Staff tips to Mermaids; how generous of them. Wonder if they asked the staff?

Actually this could be hugely useful.

Although there are a few possitive comments, including from the "quack", most are negative. Many of the anti Mermaids comments have fantastic links. This could actually get GC views to a different audience.

Thanks brewdog for spreadibg the word about how dodgy mermaids really are Wine

buttertoasty · 06/08/2019 10:28

That's a shame.

Thankfully they are getting schooled on Twitter, lots of people commenting against it.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 06/08/2019 10:36

Oh and don't get me started on their really dodgy share scheme which is all about letting fans take the risk whilst the owners have offshore the valuable part of the business where the money actually is.

That was just another marketing ploy. Collectively those in the share scheme own an insignificant amount of the business.

Needmoresleep · 06/08/2019 10:41

Dr Helen Webberley's local according to her tweet.....

Must be a fun crowd in there.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/08/2019 10:54

Well, if the outcome of the Pink IPA fiasco was a decent donation to Women in Engineering, that's somewhat mollified me on that one - so maybe for this they can redress the balance by donating to transgender trend or (if such a thing exists) an organisation supporting L&G people?

2Rebecca · 06/08/2019 10:56

If my tip for service isn't going to the person providing the service then I wouldn't give it. It's an optional charity donation not a tip

FannyCann · 06/08/2019 11:02

Whoops sorry for multiple post Blush
I was trying to send some screenshots.

FannyCann · 06/08/2019 11:06

Bravo Dr Fond of Beetles putting Helen Webberly in her place.

This may backfire on the staff who obviously aren't bothered about their tips if they are happy to all donate them to the same dodgy charity. I'm not a fan of tipping anyway. People should just be paid properly by their employers and good service should be expected not an optional extra.

DuMondeB · 06/08/2019 11:10

Exactly that, Rebecca.

I used to manage a bar, pre babies, one not unlike BrewDog in customer base. Good bar staff develop relationships with the customers, and when customers tip, it’s because they want the staff to have the money.

Nothing wrong with also having a charity collection box on the bar, but expecting all staff to hand over all tips for a month, to a charity they may or may not personally wish to support? That’s utterly wank behaviour.

Most bar staff are on minimum wage or not much more, working antisocial hours (and some subsequently have to shell out for taxis to get home safely). Let the fucking company donate, but leave the staff’s tips alone.

TirisfalPumpkin · 06/08/2019 11:21

Ahh, bollocks. They were one of the few producers of alcohol-free beer that was actually palatable.

The pink beer thing was patronising af and this is worse.

GenderApostate19 · 06/08/2019 11:46

Welk that’s a group of @70 people who won’t be using their Tower hill pub for our meet up in November.

2Rebecca · 06/08/2019 11:58

It might be just a local pub decision. I think it's a stupid decision and likely to stop people tipping if tips are seen as donations not fees for service but if they had a sign stating that was what they were doing in the bar I would just not tip. It's better than telling customers after they tip.
When I tip people they could choose to donate it to mermaids or UKIP party funds anyway. At least a sign or public email means people are warned in advance and can choose to hang on to their money.

BatShite · 06/08/2019 12:30

Staff tips are for fucking staff, not lobby groups. I would bet that the staff are not impressed by this, possibly bar a couple of ultra woe ones, but even then, I would think they want their own money, rather than it being given away.

Much fairer, if they really wish to support mermaids, would be donating like..5% of the profits from the day or something, not staffs money..

JessicaWakefieldSV · 06/08/2019 12:53

I’ve emailed a complaint re their staff member using the slur T*

MagneticSingularity · 06/08/2019 12:54

Aside from their chosen ‘charity’, how do they not see that the optics of ‘donating’ someone else’s money are horrible? This is costing them nothing (well, except a good few GC customers in the own goal kinda way) therefore just an empty virtue-signaling gesture of the most cynical kind. It’s the same as companies here who ‘donate’ staff time and wages to various causes, sure, it’s technically supposed to be voluntary but who’s telling their boss ‘no I don’t want to work for no pay just so you can look good’? Massively dick move on two counts here.

LizzieSiddal · 06/08/2019 13:08

I think it is just one local pub, Cardiff, doing this, not the whole company.

SunsetBeetch · 06/08/2019 13:31

The person credited with this idea is a member of staff, heavily into Queer Theory and has a link for a fund raiser for someone's (possibly their own?) "top surgery".

SunsetBeetch · 06/08/2019 13:31

...in their pinned tweet.

wacademia · 06/08/2019 18:01

Companies giving staff tips to charity and bragging about it for PR is not a good look

No. It's theft.

FannyCann · 06/08/2019 19:35

I know my DD's would be furious to lose a month's tips. They make nearly half as much again over their basic pay in tips. No way would they give up that for a month.

AlwaysComingHome · 06/08/2019 19:43

I thought staff were taxed on tips?

If anybody does think sterilising kids is a worthy cause wouldn’t it make more sense to donate directly?

AlwaysComingHome · 06/08/2019 19:46

Anyway, didn’t Gillette’s recent woke campaign cost them £8bn.

And that was for promoting the fairly uncontroversial message of not being an arsehole.

DuMondeB · 06/08/2019 19:54

I think the staff member who suggested this is the same person who caused a kerfuffle when the cafe they previously worked for promoted their top surgery crowd funder:
