Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Single sex toilets for men, and mixed sex.....nothing for women only.

My local town has installed a set of public toilets; men, and mixed. Nothing for women. I called up to question it/complain, and got a man who got cross and defensive, telling me that men who 'just want to spend a penny' (they are urinals only) use them, and save adding to the queues. So, men can jump the queue, women have to wait with anyone else who wants access to the mixed loos.
Does anybody know if this is allowed? It seems so wrong.

I know frag, the man I spoke to was so bitter, and angry. It's like I called up to tell him I hated him personally and was going to ruin his whole life by asking for equality Angry

I wonder if he’s against the change and now having to toe the line to pay bills.

youkiddingme · 26/07/2019 14:47

I'd have been sorely tempted to ask him if I, as a woman, was allowed to use the urinals - if so why are they designated for men, if not why not?

centrifugal · 26/07/2019 14:52

The urinals are in a private men's only room! Men get a special, 'no waiting for you sir' shortcut, women wait and sit on the pissy seats, hoping they aren't being covertly filmed in the free-for-all mixed sex ones.

OP I am massively against these toilets....

but as you didn't go in and see what was there, it's hard to know Confused

if there's a bunch of fully enclosed, including sink and sanitary bins, cubicles, then the urinals are to speed up queues. Complaining about something you've not seen seems a bit odd.

mogtheexcellent · 26/07/2019 20:50

Im in cromer atm. Did you post this on Twitter?

The toilets are fairly large and self contained but too many people use them for changing so there is not enough cubicles.

Annoyingly they closed the large toilets closer to the amusement arcade which are sex segregated.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 26/07/2019 22:51

In a town near me they changed men’s and women’s to fewer fully enclosed unisex loos. There are now fewer loos and queues tab peak times, when where there weren’t before. Unisex loos of this type actively iminate against women. Even if they are cubicles with shared sinkers they nonetheless discriminate against women on the basis of needs for privacy etc (bloody hands, safety, miscarriage etc etc.). The odd unisex loo in places like cafes is fine, but they should not be the default.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 26/07/2019 23:01

Oh goodness. Typos!

*tab = at
Imitate = discriminate

Sleepyquest · 27/07/2019 07:44

@centrifugal are they the ones that look almost like a portacabin? If so, used them recently and had to wait behind a couple of men to do so and then pray they left the toilet in an acceptable state! So the urinal thing didn't speed anything up (if I'm thinking of the same ones)

I'm pregnant at the mo and needing to pee all the time obviously and I get so annoyed having to use mixed toilets. They feel so unclean and I just rush in and out Sad

centrifugal · 27/07/2019 07:49

These are the toilets. It's being addressed on Twitter, not by me though! Seeing it spurred me on to actually say something in real life, and hopefully if a few more voices pitch in, boorish men in suits will stop ignoring women's needs.

I went to Arundel a couple of days ago and the public loos at the big car park are mixed sex like that. There are about 5 in a line and I think one disabled. I went in at 2pm and about 7pm. Big cubicles with sink inside. There was a young woman (age around 20) I was watching at my 7pm trip and she opened each door looked in, smelt, and looking disgusted moved on. Her dad came out of one and she shook her head and walked off with him. I unfortunately don’t have a strong bladder so had no choice. At 2pm they were stinky and yucky enough, at 7pm just absolutely gross. Piss on the seat, on the floor. I laid toilet paper where I could and tiptoed on that. Just foul.
I hate mixed public toilets like that. So glad I didn’t have DD age 8 with me.

TheInebriati · 27/07/2019 10:26

''Potty parity is equal or equitable provision of public toilet facilities for females and males within a public space.''
''Current laws in the United Kingdom require a 1:1 female–male ratio of restroom space in public buildings. The International Building Code requires a 2:1 female–male ratio of toilets.''
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potty_parity

Where there is no regulation to provide toilets, there is no incentive to do so because they cost money to install and run.

This is why women need to make a fuss about toilets. If we don't, we lose the ability to participate in public life.

LordRudolphVII · 27/07/2019 16:28

He sounds like an arse but I'm not sure I agree with posting somebody's name and workplace on a public forum frequented by millions of users.

Isthisafreename · 27/07/2019 16:34

@BatShite - Our local leisure centre changed the womens loos to 'all genders' and left the mens as they were.

Surely, if you're going to do this, the more sensible option would be to convert men's to all gender as men's cater for men and women, having both urinals and cubicles.

At work they have converted wheelchair accessible toilets to all-gender and left men's and women's alone.

Fraggling · 27/07/2019 17:58

All toilets are all gender. Your toilet needs aren't based on your preference for pink or blue...

Isthisafreename · 27/07/2019 19:58

@Fraggling - All toilets are all gender. Your toilet needs aren't based on your preference for pink or blue.

I know. However, that is what they are labelled now. Personally, I don't care what they call them so long as there are still sex-specific toilets available.

Voice0fReason · 27/07/2019 20:55

Are you deliberately missing the point Fraggling?
No-one care what colour the toilets are, they do care that they are safe, private and have sufficient provision for each sex. Telling men that they can use all of the toilets but the women have shared access to half of them is clearly making life much more difficult for women.

EverardDigby · 27/07/2019 21:05

Is Fraggling pointing out that single sex toilets can be mixed gender, e.g. the male toilet can be used by men and transwomen?

Isthisafreename · 27/07/2019 21:11

I assumed @Fraggling was referring to the fact that gender is a made up concept and that our toilet needs are based on sex.

noitsachicken · 27/07/2019 21:16

It’s like this in Sky Garden in London, row of male/female toilets, then separate just for men urinal area.
The cubicles had sinks/bins in.
Huge queue of women waiting whilst the men waltzed in and out!

Fraggling · 27/07/2019 21:21

Yes

Toilet should be separated by sex for a host of reasons, wherever possible

How you feel about your gender, whether you prefer things and clothes that are coded masculine or feminine is irrelevant.

If people have to use the toilet based on internal gender id, then it ignores our different biological needs, and also that there are stacks of creepy men around that will take full advantage. Also, the pics on the doors are male / female, if you do it on gender there is no where for nonnbinary people to go. It is all nonsense.

centrifugal · 30/07/2019 17:40

Called today to chase up the email, should be getting a reply in the next few days. Will update when I get it.

I'm a tenant in a local council building and I've just found out they are planning to change the Ladies Toilets to Unisex. Apparently this is now council policy.
Does anyone work in the public sector who could tell me where I could find this policy? My council is pretty good at putting lots of policy information on their website but basic searches have come back with nothing. I'm not even sure which department this comes under.
