Sorry, forgot the link:

www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/jul/09/sex-offender-released-from-wa-prison-and-given-conditional-access-to-prostitutes

“Access to sex workers will not of itself resolve the issue of the respondent’s ability to manage his sexual urges ... [but] the option for the respondent to engage in regular, albeit infrequent, sexual contact should serve as an additional protective factor.”

Yeah, let's make sure he can still have his needs met

"He has gained a rudimentary understanding of the concept of consent."

Ah well, theres no issue then

Confused
RubberTreePlant · 09/07/2019 12:38

Jeez..

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 09/07/2019 12:40

Jesus fucking Christ.

Just when I think the judicial system can't sink any lower.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 09/07/2019 12:40

(even if it's not in the UK, I don't have anymore faith in ours that this wouldn't/couldn't happen here)

stillathing · 09/07/2019 12:46

If the consensus is that men cannot control themselves. That rape is not about power but instead about the natural sexual urges of men..... then why the fuck do we not seriously consider curtailing the freedom of all men?

MagneticSingularity · 09/07/2019 12:56

So let me see if I can work my way through this so it makes any kind of sense. This man, unable/unwilling to get consensual sex, had the option of paying for sex from sex-workers before he went to prison? Right? Instead he chose to commit sex crimes on non-consensual women.

Now, they’re releasing him with a ‘rudimentary understanding of the concept of consent’ because they’re sure access to sex-workers now While it won’t resolve his proclivities toward sexually assaulting women it will - what? - take the edge off or something.

Nope, no kind of fucking sense made there. Wtf am I reading?

Yeahnahyeah · 09/07/2019 12:58

Those poor poor sex workers.

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 13:02

It's generally understood that prostitutes can't be raped because a lot of men say that it's better if there are prostitutes available in society so that real women don't get raped.
There is no consent in prostitution, it's paid rape.

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 13:04

In other words every time a man visits a prostitute he's paying for a farcical notion of consent

DuMondeB · 09/07/2019 13:04

And if those ‘sex workers’ decide they don’t want to accept him as a client, then what?

Will his ‘rudimentary understanding of the concept of consent’ keep them safe?

Fucks sake.

Dangerfloof · 09/07/2019 13:09

Sweet jesus, this is beyond parody. How in the entire world can anyone think this is a "good idea"
So the prostitute that says no? Hows that gonna go down with an entitled man? And he understands that its boredom that leads to him raping. Oh my God.

HeyDuggeesCakeBadge · 09/07/2019 13:10

What in the fresh hell is this? I can't even... No, no words.

Slacksandblouse · 09/07/2019 13:11

Did it actually say he was so desperate that he attempted to rape a sleeping man? So according to experts providing prostitutes for him will keep others safe from his abuse and assaults?
Yeah nah. Doesn’t add up.

UrsulaPandress · 09/07/2019 13:11

Is this a joke?

Grimbles · 09/07/2019 13:18

If the prostitute declined the she would obviously be responsible if he then raped a proper woman, or even worse* an actual man

*sarcasm

I'm sure he will feel that as long as puts money down he has consent.

JoyceJeffries · 09/07/2019 13:26

Presumably he doesn’t have a job so we are in effect we will be paying for him to rape prostitutes. FFS.

Imnobody4 · 09/07/2019 16:45

I have no words. We have reached the 'End Times'

Goosefoot · 09/07/2019 16:51

I don't think sex work should be legal, but I believe it is in Australia. So I guess that is the place they are starting from, normally adults could access ex workers. So they are actually placing some limits on this guy beyond what most people would have.

I can see what they are trying to accomplish, I think. It seems like this guy has some basic, serious problems with impulse control and also IQ, maybe something like FAS which is really common in the prison population. They are trying to set the situation up to make it as easy as possible for him to manage within the rules. So no porn, which I would say was a good call, but some limited (and maybe supervised?) access to sex. Will that help? I really have no idea. But I can see why someone might think so.

Lougle · 09/07/2019 16:52

"he has gained a rudimentary concept of consent"

Well, that bar is so low you can just slip a piece of paper under it. Shock

Michelleoftheresistance · 09/07/2019 16:53

And how the actual fuck will they justify this when he inevitably offends against those sex workers and quite possibly kills one of them?

Could it get any clearer that only people with penises are considered Real People in the UK of today? And that our government and justice system are now so utterly fucked up that they're no longer competent to run a corner shop never mind a country?

MoltenLasagne · 09/07/2019 16:55

So not only have Australia legalised prostitution, they’re now legally acting as both pimp in providing prostitutes to a criminal and punter in paying for prostitutes on his behalf?

TurboTeddy · 09/07/2019 17:10

WA supreme court justice Anthony Derrick said in his decision handed down on Tuesday that while Latimer remained a serious danger to the community, the risk could be managed in the community.

So the judge acknowledges this man presents a serious danger to the community but thinks he should be released anyway. How about managing the risk of serious danger by not gambling on the offenders rudimentary grasp of consent and keeping him locked up.

I worry about my grasp of reality sometimes; when I see decisions like this I'm shocked at the stupidity of people in authority but they seem to avoid widespread and universal criticism for being a fuckwit. I need this forum to reassure myself I'm not mad.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/07/2019 17:13

Those poor poor sex workers.

This.
