Apologies for those who don’t have access to the times higher ed supplement but a book called ‘is gender fluid?’ by Sally Hines has been reviewed by another academic. She basically says it’s a load of rubbish. Predictably, the woke squad is now urging everyone to buy the ‘fantastic’ and ‘groundbreaking’ book. I am glad that someone has the guts to stand up to her- she has done so much to totally undo the good work that feminists have done to try to help women and girls.

Ha hahaha she deserves it. What a twat she is

SunsetBeetch · 01/07/2019 18:57

Damn, I wish I could read that!

SunsetBeetch · 01/07/2019 18:58

Ah, twitter delivers!

Well done that academic! It would be much easier politically to just support it. Although maybe the tide is finally turning.

youllhavehadyourtea · 01/07/2019 19:05

That review needs to be emailed/twitterd to Glasgow Life.

AlwaysComingHome · 01/07/2019 20:01

In the 21st century, “gender” is used to retrospectively reinterpret what used to be understood as sexual orientation. So Hines looks back to the “late 20th century”, when “anthropological studies often interpreted gender-diverse practices as personifications of same-sex desire” – as if the very concept of sexual orientation was out of date.

These are the people Stonewall think LGBTQI... should revolve around.

ThatDoctorEM · 01/07/2019 20:13

Sally Hines, my favourite!

Gosh, Susan Matthews does a brilliant job. I particularly liked how she drew the link between the text size trick and advertising.

'Postmodern dogma served up as scripture', it is such an excellent review.

HandsOffMyRights · 01/07/2019 20:14

Laura McInerney, former editor of Schools Week and a former teacher, tweeted this last year. It remains a pertinent point (even though Schools Week rubbishes TransgenderTrend and bows down to Stonewall):

Heard Sally Hines on Woman’s Hour. Comes across as so dense couldn’t believe she was an academic frankly.

GrumpyCatLives · 01/07/2019 20:19

Sally got where she is through nepotism, unsurprisingly.

ThatDoctorEM · 01/07/2019 20:21

I'm unsure too. I think part of gender studies, in contrast to women's studies, and this whole malarky has been to delegitimise academia. It is a deliberate attempt to silence academics by making us all farcical, it brings all academic qualifications into disrepute. I reassure some students who are nervous about exams or thesis - 'Sally Hines is a professor, so you definitely have got this'.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/07/2019 20:23

Can’t say I’m surprised. I’ve seen her tweets. I do miss the ‘have you been drinking?’ replies - haven’t seen one in a while.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/07/2019 20:23

And the best feminist lecturer I ever had was my old history lecturer. She rocked.

GCAcademic · 01/07/2019 20:35

There's a TRA in my field who is equally thick. Whenever I have imposter syndrome, I think of that wokebearded wanker and it instantly goes away.

I had some amazing, fearsomely intelligent feminist lecturers when I was an undergraduate. How far we have fallen . . .

Pota2 · 01/07/2019 20:49

I hope she was drunk when writing the book and her tweets. At least that offers some sort of explanation.

I use the same mantra for myself. If I feel imposter syndrome creeping up, I remind myself that Sally Hines holds the highest academic rank possible.

"Postmodern dogma served up as scripture". What a blissful quote! Wouldn't want to be one of Sally Hines' inner circle after she became aware of this review. Grin

Singasonga · 01/07/2019 22:07

Not to worry, she'll just block and stay safe.

GCAcademic · 01/07/2019 22:14

I guarantee a letter is being written to the THES as we speak, in which Susan will be accused of being “anti-trans”.

Definitely will be some sort of letter. Have already seen it described as a ‘hit piece’. It’s amazing that in academia of all professions, some research is now impossible of even being scrutinised or critiqued and must uniformly be accepted as great.

nonsenceagain · 01/07/2019 22:24

Thank you Susan. Brilliant.

AnotherLass · 01/07/2019 22:38

I think I'm in love with Susan

ChattyLion · 01/07/2019 23:36

Grin The ‘scripture’ bit of the review is GOLD

Must be nice for Professor Hines though that the usual suspects are now rallying round tweeting each other to to buy her book, calling the TES review a ‘hit piece’ and sending love heart emojis to her.

Sally Hines herself is tweeting gifs of a woman high-fiving herself and ’when all the right people hate your book’

Confused Yup totally this is a normal academic response when someone disagrees with your ideas.
Leeds University must be so proud..

I’m embarrassed for her Blush

ChattyLion, how embarrassing!
