How do you provide a urine sample?

Had to yesterday, i had one of those little narrow specimen bottles- how do you women out there go about this?

OP posts:
CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 28/06/2019 11:11

Yeah let's talk about women peeing.

sashh · 28/06/2019 11:13

Is this the pants troll?

chloesmumtoo · 28/06/2019 11:13

I supply my dd with a large plastic throw away cup to use. However now with the war on plastics, I realize it's not such a good option. But that's what we have done in the past and then decant into the tiny pot.

HorsewithnoPissToTake · 28/06/2019 11:22

If I give an answer to this will I be part of some weird sexual fetish?

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 28/06/2019 11:22

Reported.

JoMumsnet · 28/06/2019 11:28

Hi, we've already had a few reports about this thread. Just wanted to confirm that we've checked behind the scenes and can see that the OP's a long-term member of the site. If we had any concerns at all, we'd pull the thread.

Here's a reminder of our Talk Guidelines.

Thanks

Just do.

But I do have a tried and trusted system for the poo by post sample thing.I am willing to provide a handwritten copy of my system if you provide a plain brown sae.

For me, pee in the bottle, wash hands.
For DD who is 5, pee in a cup that gets washed in the dishwasher on a very high temperature, decant into bottle, wash everyone's hands, wipe the loo seat.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 28/06/2019 11:33

Regardless of whether the OP is a long time member how is this an appropriate question to ask on the internet?

GemmeFatale · 28/06/2019 11:34

Surely you just pee in the provided pot?

I guess you could use a she-wee if you’re having trouble with aiming

DuMondeB · 28/06/2019 11:38

Even if it is a long term ‘member’ why is this a womens’ rights topic? Surely the health boards would be more appropriate?

picklemepopcorn · 28/06/2019 11:44

You could argue a shallow wide pot would be a better receptacle than a test tube shaped pot.

I certainly have to lid the bottle and then wash it.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 28/06/2019 11:46

@MNHQ this is more appropriate in the health boards.

I’d also say, this shouldn’t need explaining to an adult female. It’s pretty easy to figure out and I’m sure everyone proceeds with it pretty much the same way. I am just puzzled this is a question.

Namechange170518 · 28/06/2019 11:51

From the point of view of someone who works in a lab.....
If you don't have good aim (I know I don't), please pee into another container then transfer to sample container. It lessens the chance of the bottle being covered with piss and full of pubes. Envy < not envy

Also, don't forget to label it or it will be rejected without testing.

Birdie6 · 28/06/2019 11:54

If I guess that I'll have to do this, I take a plastic cup in my bag. I also make sure to wash / have a shower before I go, so the sample is as clean as it can be.

picklemepopcorn · 28/06/2019 11:56

I'd say the pot is badly designed for women (because, men, medicine) but I think it's actually well designed for the lab.

Thing is, namechange, often you don't know you'll be asked so are sent into the ladies with the little bottle and just do your best.

MancaroniCheese · 28/06/2019 11:59

I think the point that the OP is making is that sample bottles are not easy for women to use, but (although I don't own a penis so have no experience) would probably be easier for men to use.

Hence it is a feminist subject as perhaps there should be a different option for women to use.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 28/06/2019 12:23

Private labs using home kits send you containers to use and then transfer to the sample pot.

HerFemaleness · 28/06/2019 12:32

It's been a while since I gave birth but I recall that in my GPs surgery I was given those sample bottles, but at the maternity unit in hospital I had a small plastic pot to wee in. It's almost like female dominated environments are more aware of the fact women are built differently to men.

AlwaysComingHome · 28/06/2019 13:11

I’m willing to accept the OP at face value and assume they aren’t just taking the piss.

HorsewithnoPissToTake · 28/06/2019 13:24

..assume they aren’t just taking the piss.

Nearly wet myself laughing.

BeyondOverTheMoon · 28/06/2019 13:28

When I was last in hospital, urine samples were just the stupid narrow pots - luckily I was near enough bed-bound so had to use the commode anyway and then just pour from one to the other Envy

However, when I was in on the maternity ward, they had little paper receptacle things that were almost like a she-wee, that were attached to and then poured directly into the sample pot - so clearly a female-friendly version has been thought of, it's just not in regular use...?

AncientLights · 28/06/2019 13:50

I think it's a valid question The urinalysis pots aren't designed for women at all. In midwifery we usually wanted a mid-stream sample, so we'd ask women to somehow manage, with a pregnant belly, to pee a bit down the loo then catch some in the bottle then finish weeing. This is not easy, far from it, and can get messy. Also, you do have to be careful if transferring urine from a pot into the bottle that the pot is sterile, else you may contaminate the sample and the whole thing has been a waste of time.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 28/06/2019 13:53

why is this in FWR OP? did you meant to post here? Confused

we seem to be getting more and more of these 'off topic' threads

AriadneesWeb · 28/06/2019 13:56

In the past I’ve been given a large disposable paper pot. The vet gives you the same sort of thing if they need a pet sample.
