Has anyone heard of this organisation/charity?

My 2nd thread today -unheard of! (I mostly lurk. New username.)

Anyone know about Pride in STEM? It seems they'll be involved in a workplace I'm associated with and I want to know if they're a positive organisation doing good stuff, or if they're more like the orgs pushing queer theory into public life.

Not a huge amount of info on their website, but I was unimpressed by their twitter account. One of their trustees is James Claverley, which is a familiar name, but I can't think why it's familiar. I tried to find the rest of the trustees on their website, but that info wasn't listed (found the other info accidentally on twitter).

Has anyone heard of them or have experience to report?

TIA

I really hate that the atmosphere we're living in leads me to be wary of charities now, but there have been so many scandals lately. Sad times. Sad

I cannot find them either under their name or charity number on the charities commission site. Confused

(I realise I'm talking to myself atm. I just want to keep the info together.)

On its website, it says "charity number EW64395" but it isn't listed as a charity on the Charity Commissioners website and I couldn't find it listed on Companies House. I couldn't find it listed as an American charity either and on its website, couldn't see a regd address.

Novina · 28/06/2019 11:00

Yes. Same results here. They say they have 9 trustees. Is it usual for a charity's information to be so hard to find? General web searches point only to its own website, its own social media, and events it's been involved in. Hmmmm.

Isn't James Cleverly a Tory MP. Can't say I've heard anything about it which may be a good sign??.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 28/06/2019 11:36

Either they published the wrong charity number or they aren't a registered charity (and bullshitting that they are)

Novina · 28/06/2019 11:38

Ah, maybe that's why it sounds familiar. Although James Cleverley MP is not James Claverley trustee. Two different people.
I haven't heard of them either, but look at who they're involved with:

Charity registration numbers are just numbers, it's a trust not a charity. I have seen them or rather publicity on the university campus.

PencilsInSpace · 28/06/2019 11:39

Is a charitable trust the same as a charity?

OvaHere · 28/06/2019 11:44

Is it this organisation?

twitter.com/PrideinSTEM

Seems to be American, not sure if there is a UK version.

This particular one is all about the Queer so you are probably right to have concerns.

Novina · 28/06/2019 11:50

That's the one. I don't think it is american. Possibly global? It certainly lists uk orgs on its supporter page (linked upthread).

OP posts:
TheFlis12345 · 28/06/2019 11:52

Charitable Trusts still have registered charity numbers.

OvaHere · 28/06/2019 11:55

Yes you're right, at a second glance it does seem to be a global initiative.

It strikes me that like many other of these orgs it's just a lobby group masquerading as a charitable org.

One f the trustees signed the letter demanding an apology from Professor Simone Buitendijk. (Apologies for link to Prick News):

Also they defended the use of the word trf on Twitter a while back (I have Twitter blocked on my work pc for my own sanity so someone else will need to get it, it comes up in a search for "Pride in Stem" + trf.)

Novina, I don't know, I can't see it Grin I know it's really stupid to have it blocked but otherwise I was just spending my days in a perpetual rage.

Novina · 28/06/2019 12:59

Lol, sorry!Grin

Novina if you're in STEM, there's a thing that's been bugging me. We're supposed to be having a crisis of trust in experts, and it's generally agreed among scientists that this is a bad thing. But the gender debate is proving that experts do use their position to push political agendas by misrepresenting the science (eg, Prof Alice Roberts making out like sex is so complicated that nobody knows anyway who's male and who's female). So they're not only damaging women's rights and kids' safety, they're undermining the whole idea of trust in experts. I wonder would organisations listen if that was pointed out.

Novina · 28/06/2019 13:05

Ok, so this is the chair of pride in stem (according to his twitter bio) publishing a misogynistic slur.

Mermoose · 28/06/2019 13:09

There's one from the official Twitter account from 11 December 2018. Starts 'For those who think T*RF is a slur...' It comes up if you search for it in Google rather than Twitter.

Novina · 28/06/2019 13:10

I agree mermoose. Having been deeply disappointed with the AR/humanists debacle, I was going to check out Simon Singh's organisation (the good thinking society) to see how they're doing with their mission to promote rational thinking.

My immediate question for this organisation is how do you ensure that the charities you work with are above-board and benign. Are there any checks at all before you decide to partner with someone?

OP posts:
Mermoose · 28/06/2019 13:12

I saw Simon Singh say he's good friends with Maria MacLachlan and Andy Lewis (@lecanardnoir) and he's defended them a few times on Twitter, so I'd say there's some hope for the Good Thinking Society. Although they're probably just steering clear completely.

MoltenLasagne · 28/06/2019 13:16

But the gender debate is proving that experts do use their position to push political agendas by misrepresenting the science

I have thought for a while that what the public truly objected to was not “experts” but vested interests pushing their own bias on everyone else and refusing to acknowledge unpalatable consequences.

Novina · 28/06/2019 13:17

Yes, I've just looked and they seem to be mainly focussed on complementary medicine. I just wondered after seeing them talk about flat earthism and demonstrating the thought process of examining each argument (for a flat earth in this case) and finding the flaws.
