I can’t tell you how utterly disappointed I feel by her comments about Sex and reproduction not being binary. She knows the truth, what the hell is she doing? I’m even more upset by her than by Sarah Champion, she’s a Scientist ffs.

Floomph very eloquent Flowers

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/11/2019 08:26

I suspect she's taking the humanist role very seriously; and they are twaw. I just can't square all her previous work with all this.

Ironically, the humanists, and so Alice, who eschew religious ideology, particularly as religion often victimises women, are now blind to science and sexism and are being vehemently religious in their stance against science and scientific fact.

FadingStar · 09/11/2019 08:44

She must have some reason for being so barking. I wonder if she has a personal relationship with a TW in real life. That seems to push a lot of women into some kind of cognitive dissonance.

teawamutu · 09/11/2019 09:24

I've wondered the same about Jolyon Maughan, Fading. Although good old fashioned sexism definitely offers a alternate explanation for him.

Honestly I don't understand how she doesn't die of embarrassment spouting this shite.

FadingStar · 09/11/2019 09:28

Yes, he is very strange. I do think there is some personal relationship going on that clouds their view. I think the same with Jeremy Vine.

OldCrone · 09/11/2019 11:03

A real life relationship with a transgender person would definitely explain this. Perhaps a child who identifies as trans. It must be very hard to argue against trans ideology if you think doing so might push a young person you know towards suicide.

There are a number of different 'strains' of humanism - from the rational, atheistic, scientific slanted type you talk of...to the more spiritual, earth centred, intuitive type ( of which I would include myself).

I agree, though, about orthodox scientific opinion, and thinking, having become the new religion - adhered to and promoted with as much fervour as any evangelist.

I think we are now in an age in which established scientific orthodoxy will attempt to usurp nature: genetic engineering; DNA profiling; artificial intelligence; virtual reality.......which is why I am so despondent about the future of the planet and life on earth.

Justhadathought · 09/11/2019 11:32

and age of womb transplants, men becoming pregnant...and so on...

100% agree with this, it brings out the “just be kind” trope, what with our female socialisation and all. Someone recently was very surprised that I didn’t believe transwomen are women, as I’m generally known to be kind, open minded, accepting etc. She started a big lecture about her TW friend who ‘was more like a woman than most bio women, wears pink etc’ - she couldn’t answer when I asked what does ‘like a woman’ or ‘as a woman’ mean if not comparing an individual’s presentation/personality/likes & dislikes to a set of stereotypes, and I don’t accept those stereotypes as being the definition of woman (or man). She was genuinely confused/stumped and really couldn’t square my point of view with her knowledge that I’m not actually a raging bigot.

Catmaiden · 09/11/2019 14:10

I recently went a bit more public with my opinions and have been unfriended (in RL and on sm) by a number of people all of whom who I honestly thought would get what I was saying (which was very restrained, and very kind) . Instead I have been accused of being trans/homophobic, and vilified.
It's been quite an eye opener and not pleasant.
Fortunately I don't work in an environment where such things matter (yet...)

OldCrone · 09/11/2019 15:19

I really wish we could have a proper discussion with people who think like your friend. Her TW friend is someone who was born male who likes to present in a stereotypically feminine way. How can a woman say that that makes them 'more like a woman than most bio women'? Can she not see how misogynistic that is?

She was genuinely confused/stumped and really couldn’t square my point of view with her knowledge that I’m not actually a raging bigot.

I'd love to know what's going on in people's heads here to make them so confused. Do they really think that a male presenting in a feminine way actually makes them change sex? And can she not see that reducing 'being a woman' to sexist stereotypes of femininity is offensive to women?

If your friend respects your views and knows you're not a bigot, I hope she'll have gone away and thought about what you've said.

IrridiumFlares · 17/11/2019 18:41

I fully support the work of fellow (published) scientists like Alice Roberts, and also the right of biological women to safe women only spaces.

Do carry on tearing other women scientists apart...
I'm off to a less holier than thou section and will leave you to your endless backstabbing and infighting.

Oh and BTW, may the best man win... because he will if you don't support women who are in the public eye and are knowledgeable and outspoken... #lockherup anyone?

What have you done for Science +/- Women's rights lately, besides getting your hate on and tearing women, and women in STEM down?
---->Biscuit

I'll leave you to it.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 17/11/2019 18:49

why resurrect a thread that's been inactive for a week? wouldn't it have been better for Alice if you'd let it die? Confused

and great flounce btw

that was pretty much a drive by biscuiting

Germ1360 · 17/11/2019 18:52

If anyone's doing women in STEM a disservice, it's Alice Roberts.

"Drive by biscuiting".... Grin

Catmaiden · 17/11/2019 18:58

Women in STEM, here
Still think AR is wrong.

MIdgebabe · 17/11/2019 19:08

I treat and judge people according to their words and deeds, not sex ( to the best of my ability)

I may make allowances for females because of systematic discrimination, but if a female talks rubbish it's still rubbish

Yours, published author, STEM,
.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 17/11/2019 19:19

Weird resurrection bro. Grin

FloralBunting · 17/11/2019 19:29

Nothing looks as impressive as a parting shot than, a week after everyone else has moved on, coming back and announcing that you're leaving everyone to it.

RoyalCorgi · 17/11/2019 19:31

"Drive by biscuiting..." is the funniest thing I've heard in ages. Only on Mumsnet - shame it was too late for that bloke to include in his book on Mumsnet lingo.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 17/11/2019 19:31

Ah, so biscuiting people is OK as long as they're nasty wimmins who're saying things you don't like? No deletion in that case?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/11/2019 19:34

They are a scientist who seems to not understand science and attacks women. Sorry but we can’t challenge them because they are women? Nonsense.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 17/11/2019 19:37

I'm now imagining someone in a car driving along veeery slowly, aggressively lobbing jammy dodgers at anyone who points out that biological sex is a thing that exists. Because that's a sensible and not at all odd hobby.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/11/2019 19:39

Clown car?

MIdgebabe · 17/11/2019 19:40

Jammy dodgers being distributed? Where ?!?

FloralBunting · 17/11/2019 19:40

Yeah, lobbing baked goods is definitely the way women stick together. The first recorded use was when Henry the Eighth's six wives all started chucking muffins at each other saying 'Behead her, not me!'
