"Gendered periods"

This Twitter thread. "Always" is offensive because they market their period products to (gasp) girls.

twitter.com/VetNurseVibes/status/1130584532237856768?fbclid=IwAR1o-y94Cp9P38gFaWzk8xmez8qNkzTqleU_ohUHeV9VRWgQO1Rx1Jlagzo

Just purchased #Period supplies for myself & my #Trans son. After being a lifelong user of @Always* products, I am profoundly disappointed in this trans/non-binary/queer-exclusionary design. “Bold Like A Girl”? “Strong Like A Girl”? “Brilliant Like A Girl”? Come on, #Always!

Can it get any more ridiculous?

About what, Vicky?

yetanotherusernameAgain · 17/06/2019 18:56

Some of the Twitter replies refer to the dysphoria caused by having periods. It reminds them that they have the biological body of a woman. Having the packaging/advertising refer to girls and women is a further twist of the knife.

Interesting that they admit to dysphoric feelings, despite trans no longer being recognised as a mental health condition.

I’m going to start marketing Manitary Pads- for your Manstrual Cycle and cash the fuck in.

Gingerkittykat · 17/06/2019 19:46

I read Dundee University have started putting sanitary protection in the mens toilets.

I'm waiting for the Scottish Governments free sanitary protection initiatives changing their language to those who menstruate.

(as an aside I'm a part time student and picked up a free mooncup at my educational institute, and I love there are loads of very prominent displays of sanitary products available for free)

I wonder if we should email Always to tell them not to give in? They will probably get bombarded by protests from the trans activists so good to have a balance.

Also what proportion of trans men take testosterone? Does that not stop periods?

Dundee University did put sanitary products in the men's toilets but have found the men mess about with them and stuff them down the toilets etc so are reconsidering this policy.

FermatsTheorem · 17/06/2019 19:56

Delirium - pretty much what I suggested upthread! Great minds and all that. Tell you what, let's go into partnership. We buy cheap co-op own brand, give them a quick squirt of lynx, repackage them in a khaki package, and bob's your uncle.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/06/2019 19:56

This has to be a joke right?

Greyhoundsaregreyt · 17/06/2019 19:59

What else would they do with them, bloodandtears, to be fair??
It’s not like their intended use has any relevance.

Deliriumoftheendless · 17/06/2019 20:04

Sorry Fermat, must have missed your post! But yeah, let’s Dragon’s Den it.

In all seriousness though, wouldn’t it be a solution? All kinds of things trigger people. Congrats on your baby cards must be difficult for women who are struggling to conceive or have miscarried. Mothers/Fathers day stuff for those without. Valentine’s Day for those who have lost a partner etc.

Would trans man specific pads and tampons be less triggering? And if so why aren’t the trans community asking for them? Hmmmm?

(Rhetorical question)

Deliriumoftheendless · 17/06/2019 20:04

And I think you meant Bob’s your Auntie. 😂

FermatsTheorem · 17/06/2019 20:07

And I think you meant Bob’s your Auntie. That did cross my mind. Either that or Roberta's your uncle. Either way, they insist on xie/xir pronouns.

TurboTeddy · 17/06/2019 20:09

You are a genius. Are we going to see you on Dragons Den? I'd love to see the pitch. Grin

Girlofgold · 17/06/2019 20:14

But if we were in charge of the always marketing. The blue water would be red (ideally with clots). They wouldn't fucking smell or rustle. They wouldn't have wanky bold as a girl statements. They'd be cool and functional (I liked when they had little known period related messages on them) because that's all we need them to be?

But yeah humans of the female sex have periods. Must be hard for trans kids to deal with periods if they want to be male. Hard enough to deal with when you don't question being female. The mum sounds a little demented.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/06/2019 21:04

I’ve got it:

🎶 Doodah tampons... for women who just can’t self ID out of periods 🎶 💃🏻 🏃🏻‍♀️🍫🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍩🍭🍪🥃🍬🍡🥮🍦🎾🏸🏋🏻‍♀️⛹️‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤾🏽‍♀️🤽‍♀️🏄🏻‍♀️🧗🏻‍♀️🚴🏻‍♀️⛸⛸⛸etc etc etc

IcedPurple · 17/06/2019 21:20

Someone whining about 'female centric advertising'?

For a product which by definition will be used exclusively by.... females?

I honestly thought it was a parody. But it's not.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/06/2019 21:26

I’m really upset that prostate checks are just advertised to men. It’s just not fair. And as for shaving foam...

knottybeams · 17/06/2019 21:46

I do vaguely wonder why a biologically XX human who identifies as male is not "woke" enough to use a mooncup or reusable pads for environmental reasons alone. Am I metaTERFing here?

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 17/06/2019 22:14

By coincidence, I’m currently gathering men’s gifts for a charity prize auction thing.

A cunning plan could be forming. Or it would be if I didn’t know full well how flat it would fall.

Gingerkittykat · 17/06/2019 23:00

Penguin, I buy cheap male shaving foam for doing my pits!

Rabbithole, well you would want to be inclusive of all men, including the ones with vaginas.

Orchidoptic · 17/06/2019 23:11

lordprof thanks for a giggle

PegLegAntoine · 17/06/2019 23:14

Wow. How traumatic for her “son” to be reminded “he” still has a functioning uterus

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 17/06/2019 23:21

How can people get so up in arms about this?

It's triggering for me to be reminded that no one gives a shit about women every time I put on a seatbelt that cuts into my neck, or try to look in a mirror that is placed two inches too high, or when my useless male colleague gets promoted above me.

These things affect a far greater proportion of the population and yet we're supposed to care about manstruation?

BlackForestCake · 17/06/2019 23:29

I can’t help giggling at the thought of the packaging and marketing of manly sanpro. It would probably be in camouflage, or blue with chrome edging. Hey, you, you're a tough man, you're not scared of a bit of blood! Use Always for Men, for ultimate absorption. Can deal with a real man's period.

NKFell · 17/06/2019 23:31

Oh it makes me sick. I’m having a twitter argument over this. Don’t they realise that Always are doing their own version of throw/run/kick like a girl.

I’m not saying I take my morals from multimillion £ organisations but surely it’s a good thing and these numpties ruin it.
