Women with fake little girl voices

Is it me or are they becoming more prevalent? I moved to Australia 4 years ago and they are RIFE here. I was constantly confused by the high-pitched voices and thought "Is this part of the accent?" But I've realised it isn't. It's a forced, high-pitched squeak which some women do.

I know some women naturally have high, young sounding voices but I can tell the fake ones a mile away.

I HATE THEM so MUCH! Speak properly for God's sake!

It’s an older lady thing here in Australia and it’s awful, isn’t it?!?!?!

carla1983 · 17/06/2019 04:46

I used to have a friend who would put on a little girl's voice when she talked to her OH (only for him) it was so annoying. She even did it when they argued but spoke normally to everyone else.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 17/06/2019 04:47

Eh? I'm from rural Victoria and have never come across this...

JanesKettle · 17/06/2019 04:52

I'm in AU and I've never noticed it.

50shadesofgreyrock · 17/06/2019 05:19

One of the women in my office does this. She’s about 63. What’s really annoying is I find myself doing it back to her. (I parrot accents subconsciously. I have to constantly stop myself in case people take offence.) I’m not in Australia.

JanesKettle · 17/06/2019 05:54

Maybe it's regional. You're not in QLD, are you OP ? Rising inflection at the end of the sentence ?

Childrenofthestones · 17/06/2019 06:05

The fast show did skits on this year's ago.

SummerPlace · 17/06/2019 06:06

Live in Sydney - never noticed it.

And I would, as it's the sort of thing that would make me see red.

InFiveMins · 17/06/2019 06:08

I notice this all the time and I agree with you OP it is infuriating!!

SummerPlace · 17/06/2019 06:11

@justilou1 Oh, but then I forgot: I'm an older woman, not an older lady, so maybe the people with whom I associate don't do it.

There is a theory (and it is only a theory) that when fully adult grown people speak in child like voices it’s because mentally, part of their mind, is stuck at the age of when something traumatic happened to them. I.e Marilyn Monroe.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 17/06/2019 06:20

I always thought some women just naturally talk like this?

Me, I sound like a man (baritone)Grin

dancingcamper · 17/06/2019 06:24

I find this when visiting some parts of the US, women speak generally at a higher pitch than in the UK.

It's not that twee little girl voice but I still find it irritating after a while. Just a cultural difference though.

WishingILivedOnAnIsland · 17/06/2019 06:26

I'm sorry, but a feminist chat thread policing women's voices?

Can we not?

My friend worked at a radio station and kept a folder of emails from listeners complaining about women's DJ and Newsreaders voices being annoying. It had thousands of emails in it.

He also kept a folder of listeners complaining about the (overwhelmingly male) DJ and newsreaders voices being annoying. It had Zero emails in it.

megrichardson · 17/06/2019 06:40

It's enculturation. Some women are 'trained' from an early age to speak to men with a little girl voice, presumably for attention.
It is indeed grating.

CountFosco · 17/06/2019 06:42

Women's voices have generally got deeper as we have got more power in the workplace. I suspect Margaret Thatcher's well known voice coaching has increased this effect in Britain in comparison to some other countries, we all know we 'need' a deep voice to sound authorative.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 17/06/2019 06:43

Wishing, are you now policing what we can talk about?Wink

Feminists can talk about what the hell we want

Just trying to understand maybe what's at the root of put on little-girl voices, nobody is saying women's voices are annoying as such

Raffy2019 · 17/06/2019 06:45

Oh God, this is a pet hate of mine. It makes the hairs stand up on my arms and neck. My dh's stepmum and step sister do inane baby talk voices; they are 53 and 26. 🤢

Barbarafromblackpool · 17/06/2019 06:49

Is it ‘sexy baby’?

Iggly · 17/06/2019 06:53

My friend used to do this with her boyfriend. Fuckery ridiculous

mrswilson2 · 17/06/2019 07:10

It's because of the Kardashians , they do it , bloody annoying

Bezalelle · 17/06/2019 07:14

It's analysis, Wishing, not criticism.

Diddleysquat · 17/06/2019 07:20

Last year DSs teacher did this complete with a little lisp. She is vice principal and had to stand in as principal for a few months due to problems. I’m convinced she didn’t get the principal job full time because of her irritating way of talking. It reminded me of Deloris Umbridge from Harry Potter.

justilou1 · 17/06/2019 07:26

Interestingly in Aus there are the extremely fluffy little girly voices and the female version of ladette/blokey ones as well. Both equally grating. Believe it or not, the fluffy one is better for your vocal chords.... Oh, and @snitzelvoncrumb - I AM an Aussie, so don’t be xenophobic. (And it’s Schnitzel, btw....)
