Mermaids has apparently put lots of confidential data online including private emails, personal data and emails demonstrating the pressure they have put on the Tavistock.
Andrew Gilligan article - share token:

Its just reached the BBC

I was about to post that Grin Rather biased article I think - seems to give rather more time to reporting Mermaids denials than the facts from the Times.

Popchyk · 16/06/2019 12:54

One of the trustees is on Twitter, referring to the Times article as "an attack piece".

Paul Devlin.

twitter.com/Paul_BIMLtd/status/1139994616206438405

So I'm not hopeful of any self-reflection with the Trustees.

DanaPhoenix · 16/06/2019 12:55

Mermaids was "technically" my peak trans. I was initially drawn into research by seeing online abuse of Rose McGowan. Seeing a screenshot of a mermaids promotion featuring puppies and lollies gave me such a visceral reaction. I couldn't in good conscience ignore it. Puppies were how a pedophile tried to lure me at 10. I managed to get away.

I hope this latest breach of trust being exposed is the result of a whistleblower. I hope the whistleblower is a mother, who despite being dragged (guilted) into going along with the "party" line still maintained enough knowledge of a previous professional position to recognise the bullshit being peddled to them. Was clever enough to subtly question and brave enough to expose it.

I'm sure I'm not the only woman on here who at some point has had someone attempting to explain to you (because you're a mum with a baby) false information about something that (unknown to them) was your previous area of expertise.

MrsSnippyPants · 16/06/2019 12:55

This quote!

"I think it's important to note that this dates back some two years when Mermaids was a smaller charity dealing with the first aggressive onslaught from those who are opposed to giving vulnerable transgender children and young people the safe spaces they need."

So anyone who disagrees with them is part of an 'aggressive onslaught'.

AnyMinuteNow · 16/06/2019 12:56

Tyebstuff we 'know' about child development/behaviour is based on research, experiments... scientific documented enquiry.

What exactly are these major life altering decisions being based on?

Is it seriously just because someone thinks it is?

Popchyk · 16/06/2019 13:00

Trustee Paul Devlin considers himself an expert on governance and trusteeship, supposedly.

becauseitmattersltd.co.uk/services/

What Paul does for organisations:

Board and trustee development – Work with Boards, Trustees, Chairs on: Best practice in governance and trusteeship; Being an effective Chair; Being an effective Non-Executive Director; The Non-Executive – Executive Director relationship; The Board – NHS Governor relationship; Leading equality and diversity

NHS Governance and Governors – Work with Governors, Lead Governors, and Councils of Governors on : Best practice in governance and trusteeship; Being an effective NHS Governor; Being an effective Lead Governor; The NHS Governor – Board relationship; The governance of equality and diversity

SarahTancredi · 16/06/2019 13:01

Is it seriously just because someonethinksit is?
Well theres nothing else it can be based on. Certainly no long term results to consult.

Needmoresleep · 16/06/2019 13:06

Paul Devlin spent 5 years at Action for Children earlier in his career, so presumably he is aware of the importance of robust safeguarding.

DanaPhoenix · 16/06/2019 13:26

Undoubtedly most of those involved will claim expertise. You need to have knowledge of a topic/situation to find find ways to subvert it. Never forget they're playing the long game.

OrchidInTheSun · 16/06/2019 13:31

Both Paul Devlin and Stephen Ellis are responsible for compliance and governance in their day jobs. Where was the oversight?

RedToothBrush · 16/06/2019 13:31

One of the trustees is on Twitter, referring to the Times article as "an attack piece".

I'm sure the ICO will agree with him... 🤣

Popchyk · 16/06/2019 13:37

Trustees' official statement: "We are grateful to the Sunday Times for bringing it to our attention".

On Twitter: "It's an attack piece".

So are you grateful or not?

RedToothBrush · 16/06/2019 13:45

Fixed it:
"We are pissed at you for pointing out we aren't doing our job properly and making us have to do it. This is an aggressive and unfair attack on our lack of competence."

JessicaWakefieldSV · 16/06/2019 13:47

We are pissed at you for pointing out we aren't doing our job properly and making us have to do it. This is an aggressive and unfair attack on our lack of competence.

^ nicely summed up

RedToothBrush · 16/06/2019 13:47

BTW, has anyone got a screen shot of the trustees comment. The ICO don't take kindly to comments and a culture which doesn't take their data responsibilities seriously, and seeks to blame others for their incompetence / lack of regard for data protection.

They will be interested in seeing tweets like that...

ChickenonaMug · 16/06/2019 13:47

AnyMinuteNow I don't wish to say who he is in here, as it well only risking out me and I can't do anything about him anyway.

Other women do know about what happened and if fact someone local to me came with me when I went to speak to him a second time to ask him why he thought it appropriate to sign this letter placing one vulnerable group above another, especially when during my meeting with him I had made clear that I thought both groups were vulnerable and needed protection and support. He was very rude (not swearing) to the woman who went to support me when she expressed her view on single-sex spaces and although I wish that she hadn't been subjected to that from him. I am very glad that she witnessed what he is like on this issue.

Anlaf · 16/06/2019 13:59

From a trustee of mermaids:

Data breaches by Mermaids exposed in the Times
LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/06/2019 14:01

I would have though a more appropriate statement would have been:
‘Oh fuuuuuuuuuuck. We’ve been rumbled!’

HandsOffMyRights · 16/06/2019 14:06

The word 'attack'. The reporting of data breaches isn't transphobic or an attack.

The responses from Mermaids and trustees shows what we're dealing with. That level of arrogance in charge of so many children's lives is dangerous.

Doyoumind · 16/06/2019 14:09

Remarkably The Guardian have now covered this and go with what The Times reported regarding the presence of parent and children details within the emails rather than what Mermaids claim.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/06/2019 14:12

The guardian? Are you sure??

jamrollyolly · 16/06/2019 14:15

From the BBC article

jamrollyolly · 16/06/2019 14:17

It maintained there was "no evidence" the information had been retrieved by anyone other than the Sunday Times, or those contacted by their journalist.
