Perhaps the most mealy mouthed editorial I've read from the Guardian. They really don't want to accept that their approach on these issues might be wrong and pissing off readers (those they have left)

How ironic, Guardian, when you are complicit in this.

You incite violence towards women with your complete support for TRAs.

What a simplistic editorial. Butter wouldn't melt. And how convenient you fail to mention the regressive gender ideology being taught in schools by Moffatt, Stonewall and co.

It's like the "there's violence on both sides" spiel when we know that it's women who are being silence, attacked and doxxed.

And The Guardian, which has called women, womxn, reported Julie Bindel's attack as her fault, has gaslit a nation by refusing to name the hulking elephant in the room, has the audacity to refer to authoritarian, right wing regimes.

EverardDigby · 11/06/2019 07:04

I won't give the Guardian clicks, and I used to be a subscriber. The Times now gets my money.

RiversDisguise · 11/06/2019 07:12

Odious, truth-averse rag, happy to dodge tax and label the bulk of the UK population fascists.

franke · 11/06/2019 07:18

Totally agree. Weasel words wrapped up in a lame editorial.

"The argument between trans activists and feminists regarding proposed legal reforms has unfortunately become extremely bitter. Both groups feel their identities and beliefs are threatened by each other."

Such a trite way to describe the threat to women.

I've been disappointed with the Guardian for a long time now, but this is the final nail. I also note comments are not open for this piece, as usual Hmm

HipTightOnions · 11/06/2019 07:19

Note that they think “reassigned gender” is a protected characteristic.

OldCrone · 11/06/2019 07:51

Note that they think “reassigned gender” is a protected characteristic.

At least they didn't say "gender identity". But both "reassigned gender" and "gender reassignment" give the impression that some meaningful "reassignment" has to have taken place. They don't immediately bring to mind some bloke with stubble who has put on a dress, shouted "I'm a laydee", and physically attacked a woman.

Daughterofmabel · 11/06/2019 08:24

pathetic

Timefortea4 · 11/06/2019 08:55

I think they're very nervous of a backlash from their American staff and readers (there was one when they published an editorial acknowledging a possible rights conflict the day that the GRA consultation closed). Wonder how many female readers they have lost. I grew up reading The Guardian. Buying The Times and Telegraph now. They're making a difference (I spoke to a senior Guides volunteer and she had read about the change to the Scouts safeguarding policy in The Times. Coverage matters!)

ThePurportedDoctoress · 11/06/2019 08:58

"Recent attacks on lesbians provide shocking proof of rising intolerance, fuelled by populists and hostile public discourse"
Followed by a photo of a bearded policeman with a rainbow flag.
It kind of says it all, doesn't it.

And I'm sick of this "bad people on both sides" bullshit. Just look at the latest - TRAs sending Jean Hatchet, a cancer survivor, pictures of scans and asking people to knock her off her bike.

LangCleg · 11/06/2019 09:01

Any efforts to reach an accommodation deserve support.

Yeah. No. Fuck off you cavilling, complicit cockwombles.

Popchyk · 11/06/2019 09:07

"Hostile public discourse" of which The Guardian has been a leading exponent in their hostile public discourse against women. Zero reflection from them in their own part in this. Owen Jones personally has been responsible for much of the hostile public discourse.

Surprised that they even mentioned Julie Bindel though. They'll get flak for that.

I've been done with The Guardian for 2 years, after buying it for 30 years.

Won't be going back.

ThePurportedDoctoress · 11/06/2019 09:11

Surprised that they even mentioned Julie Bindel though.

I'm surprised they used the word lesbians.

Apollo440 · 11/06/2019 09:12

I read the Guardian for 20 years. I wouldn't wipe my arse with it now. Obviously they have masses of new readers and can afford to piss off people like me. Oh wait....Hopefully they'll go bust soon.

Toorahtoorahaye · 11/06/2019 09:14

Still insisting it’s a clash of “identities” - no it fucking isn’t

Popchyk · 11/06/2019 09:15

And funny how the blame is put at the feet of right-wingers and populists.

Most of the hostility towards women is coming from the left. The Guardian included.

Get your own house in order.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 11/06/2019 09:23

Mealy mouthed platitudes from a once great newspaper.

Cancelled my Guardian readership a couple of years ago as they repeatedly censored women and manipulated the news, rather than reporting it. I'll never go back.

terryleather · 11/06/2019 09:27

Apart from all the fucking off they (The Guardian) can do, that ridiculous bit about identities has given me the absolute radge.

Being female is an actual material reality, not a feeling in your head or a costume you can choose - it's not a fucking made up identity.

Women are oppressed through the material reality of their sexed bodies, they cannot identify out of it.

Feck off Guardian.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 11/06/2019 09:28

The tags on the piece are revealing:

LGBT rights / Opinion
Birmingham / London / Transgender / editorials

No lesbian, women, anything like that...

Popchyk · 11/06/2019 09:43

The usual subjects squawking about transphobia in The Guardian Twitter feed.

Needmoresleep · 11/06/2019 09:47

I could not figure my way through the word salad. Agree with them or not, Times journalism is clearer.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 11/06/2019 09:52

I registered with The Times for a limited number of articles after Speaker's Corner. Soon after that I subscribed and it's well worth it.

The Guardian is full of misogynist, lesbophobic crap and I don't know how Hadley Freeman stands working there.

Needmoresleep · 11/06/2019 09:56

I was left feeling a wee bit sorry for Katie Hopkins. My guess is that none of the people involved in the various events read what she writes. So a bit of a stretch to allocate blame to her.

Doyoumind · 11/06/2019 09:59

What I don't understand is how we on one side can see that daily The Guardian has pro trans stories and the TRAs are suggesting The Guardian is completely transphobic. It just shows that they throw the term around with absolutely no basis.

NotBadConsidering · 11/06/2019 10:02

Popchyk

That thread is utterly bonkers. I mean beyond normal Twitter bonkers. Both sides of the debate calling the Guardian a hateful rag. A libellous post about Julie Bindel claiming she “literally want trans people to die”.

This is what happens when you take an editorial stance then try and shift it. You end up pissing everyone off. I hate them. I’ve been moderated onto the naughty step (pre-moderation) for expressing nothing but concern about women’s rights. If newspapers reported facts and didn’t act like a propaganda machine they wouldn’t have this problem. The question is, do they see it as a problem? The enlightening thread about their financial backers throws an interesting slant on that.
