Jeremy Corbyn's ridiculous speech

Just heard Jeremy Corbyn make a rousing speech where amongst other things he talks about how we must defeat misogyny.

He could perhaps start tackling that within his own party before he starts taking on the world Hmm

jeremy Corbyn is a twat , if he cant organise a successful opposition with the current govt he is not fit for the job

FloralBunting · 04/06/2019 17:42

He’s the oldest student political activist in town.

Most definitely. Which is why his breathless commonroom ranting had quite a lot of young people swept along for a while.
But eventually most students wise up and realize that empty posturing is just that. In all honesty, I think Corbyn thinks he means well, but like Owen Jones, he's got enough canny to rabble rouse but is a bit too functionally dim to move beyond the banner waving.

And yes, I think he's, like a lot of men, casually misogynist. He wouldn't outright say he hates women, but he will comfortably contribute to a culture that shits all over them without a second thought, and that amounts to the same thing as far as I can see.

ThePurportedDoctoress · 04/06/2019 17:52

Corbyn gives 'rousing speeches' about misogyny much like he speaks about 'all forms of racism'. It's empty words and deflection.
According to Stephen Whittle, "they" have Labour's backing on self-id. If JC is genuinely interested in women's issues, he can start by disputing that claim. Over to you, Jeremy.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 04/06/2019 19:00

Whittle, "they" have Labour's backing on self-id.

Whittle is correct, "A Labour government will reform the Gender Recognition Act and the Equality Act 2010 to ensure they protect Trans people by changing the protected characteristic of ‘gender assignment’ to ‘gender identity’ and remove other outdated language such as ‘transsexual’."

It hasn't even dawned on them how that will impact on women and girls. Yet they are convinced that they can defeat misogyny.

This pretty much hits the nail on the head!

Despite being decidedly upper MC and having a corporate career, I've always been and continue to be an ardent leftie ... but the above is the reason I just can't bring myself to vote for the man.

There's nothing wrong - well, in my very biased personal opinion - with some radical politics. But I need these to come with a healthy dose of "definitely-a-groen-arse-adultism". And he fails miserably on that front.

I'd be more likely to vote for my centre-right boss' boss (who has political aspirations and with whom I disagree fundamentally), because I know him to be essentially mature , pragmatic and hence capable of doing the right thing if push comes to shove because he's not an utter moron.

JC, on the other hand, just comes across like a really wrinkly version of my most naive work experience students: it all seems very passionate and nothing he says or does suggests a deeper grasp of actual issues. And a lot of it feels like virtue signalling for its own sake.

I hate this. I've not voted since the LP went full-on student politics and it's making me feel horrible.

"A Labour government will gender audit all policy and legislation for its impact on women before implementation."

So... they will 'gender audit' the impact on women of a policy that would render the words 'gender' and 'woman' meaningless? That shouldn't take long. Hmm

Quietlife333 · 04/06/2019 21:07

I have no time for Corbyn. Presiding over Labour’s budge up or fuck off tactics. Saying he wants to root out misogyny? He couldn’t root out a carrot.

ChattyLion · 04/06/2019 22:00

Given the abysmal depths of how unelectable he’s made Labour, you’d think if Magic Grandpa actually cared about doing anything to tackle misogyny like getting into government, he’d have buggered off ages ago. Self before Party.

TheInebriati · 04/06/2019 22:11

Or they are using 'misogyny' in a way that is different from the way we would use it. I have seen it used as an accusation against GC women on Twitter.

Justhadathought · 04/06/2019 22:12

I would choose them over the Tories any day of the week

Many of us now no longer want to choose either.

FloralBunting · 04/06/2019 22:19

Yes, AWAs are fond of shifting the definition of misogyny to mean being 'anti-femininity'. So you end with a feminist accused of being a misogynist because she objects to men wearing high heels and and scratchy lingerie as an expression of their true inner woman feelings.

And then there's the idea of 'transmisogyny' which on first sight might reasonable be assumed to be the appalling woman-hatred inherent in the trans movement, but is actually the extra-specially bad version of boring old run of the mill misogyny, just like trans people who are men being extra special 'women'.

So frankly, Corbyn can rail all he likes against misogyny. I don't have the first fucking clue what he might mean by that, and I suspect he doesn't know either.

Quintella · 04/06/2019 22:24

The Tory who blocked upskirting, I think he had a valid reason for it. He tries to block all bills which are snuck through without being debated.
He objects so that they have to be debated.
He didn't pick out this one bill, he does it often.

With respect this is rubbish.

There is nothing honourable about Christopher Chope blocking the upskirting bill or the FGM bill. There have been members bills put forward by his friends that he's had no objection to. Please don't portray him as being a principled man.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 04/06/2019 22:25

He's such a massive bellend. Will never again vote Labour with him at the helm

Pthagonal · 04/06/2019 22:51

Didn't Corbyn once say that he was going to meet Linda Bello's to discuss self ID? I'm sure we'd have heard if they had met up.

Babdoc · 04/06/2019 23:29

Labour are all talk and virtue signalling, whereas the Tories have already had TWO female prime ministers. Actions speak louder than platitudes.
