Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Dominic Raab still thinks feminists are bigots

Cwenthryth · 26/05/2019 13:24

He was on Marr this morning, just catching up on it now.

Remember when he wrote “feminists are now amongst the most obnoxious bigots” (amongst other gems) in this article in 2011 Dominic Raab: We must end feminist bigotry?

Marr just asked him if he still stands by that statement - he just waffled about supporting equality/Maria Miller. He’s asking to be our Prime Minister, and didn’t think that might be a good opportunity to say “hmm, I did generalise a bit there didn’t I, perhaps that was slightly offensive” at least.

Not that I have any say in who the Tories choose anyway, but way to start turning off 52% of the electorate before you’re even in No10, Dom.

Raab is a lawyer so he probably needs to read the GRA 2004 plus all the Hansard Reports for that and the Equality Act 2010 + Hansard Reports very carefully so that he understands all the arguments before he starts hurling insults about.

[He is also married to a woman who works at Google!]

Galvantula · 26/05/2019 13:58

He's still a dick that 'didn't realise we relied so much on the channel' so nothing surprises me.

Dervel · 26/05/2019 14:00

But not all of that 52% of the electorate would describe themselves as feminists. I think there is sadly more people now who would take anti-feminist rhetoric as a plus point than a negative these days.

FlorenceLyons · 26/05/2019 14:03

I don't think Raab understands what the word 'feminist' means.

placemats · 26/05/2019 14:04

Raab's intellect is about a third of that of Theresa May's.

Intellectually, he punches above his weight.

Cwenthryth · 26/05/2019 14:40

It’s another “oh, give me the self-belief of a mediocre man” moment isn’t it.

Politics is so depressing at the moment.

Of course he hates feminists; he’s the personification of the patriarchy.

TimeLady · 26/05/2019 14:45

I have a vote in the upcoming leadership election....…

Thanks for the reminder. Wink

MsMcWibble · 26/05/2019 14:45

He can get lost.

placemats · 26/05/2019 14:48

I like Rory Stewart. Not that I'm a member who has a say.

Sunkisses · 26/05/2019 14:49

When he was slagging off feminists for being 'bigots' was he referring specifically to the trans/biology issue? Or was he just being an MRA-men-have-it-so-much-harder type, i.e. pissed off about sex discrimination laws that help address sexism?

Cwenthryth · 26/05/2019 14:52

The MRA option, Sun. Also from that article: “From the cradle to the grave, men are getting a raw deal”, and a nasty ex-wife trope sob story (about a constituent).

OP posts:
placemats · 26/05/2019 14:53

Sun He probably didn't understand and thought it was a curve ball question. That's as high as his intellect goes.

No one in the Brexit process, i.e. the Civil Service or the EU knows why he was there as it was clear from the outset he was not fit for purpose.

Sunkisses · 26/05/2019 14:53

Ah just read the 2011 article the OP linked to, on Politics Home. Raab was not referring to the trans/biology issue. He was referring to the gender pay gap etc (i.e. MRA Jordan Peterson type arguments)

pearlkent · 26/05/2019 14:59

When I spoilt my EU ballot paper on Thursday, I followed advice on here to put some sort of mark in one of the boxes (I used XX and the female symbol) and then scrawl all over the paper in green ink "woman - adult human female", so that it might have more chance of being scrutinised (in order for one of the parties to claim it was a vote for them). I agonised over which box to "spoil". I was going to choose the Animal Welfare Party but then decided I'd put it in the Conservative box, so that hopefully someone in the Tories would see it (and also hoping that loads of other people might do similar so it would have more impact).

Anyway, with the Tory leadership competition coming up, it might be useful to discuss on here which of the (dire) candidates might have potential to be on the feminist side, not that we have any say in it. If we talk about it enough, some of them might notice that we matter in the long term (ie general election), and that it's worth their while to listen to 52% of the population.

Does anyone know what Rory Stewart's "feminist" views are? He must know about the self-ID problem in prisons for example?

Needmoresleep · 26/05/2019 15:05

Sorry Dominic, the DM has a huge influence over those of their readers who are Conservative Party members.

Perhaps you should read the comments attached to today's MOS article about Mermaids. Simples......83% of the country are GC. Their votes will count at the next election. They are already sceptical about political correct urban types from either party. You need to get out more.

placemats · 26/05/2019 15:30

Stewart doesn't like ideology.

pearlkent · 26/05/2019 15:38

Maybe those who are on twitter could start tweeting the candidates about their views on self-ID etc? I realise that they are all concentrating on Brexit at the moment, but if they are serious about being leader and maybe PM, then we need to know their views on other pressing matters.

For some reason I'm holding out a bit of hope for Stewart - is anyone on FWR one of his constituents?

Raab can f**k right off, the spineless misogynist.

TimeLady · 26/05/2019 17:10

Stewart is, at heart, a Remainer. I can't see the party faithful being in the mood for that.

TimeLady · 26/05/2019 17:16

Sarah Vine (Mrs Gove) is definitely GC, so I'd hazard a guess that her DH is too. They both used to write for The Times.

From 2016:

ChariotsofFish · 26/05/2019 17:39

It’s nothing to do with self id. Everything he says is pure MRA bullshit. He hates women.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 26/05/2019 17:45

I know quite a few people who have a vote in the leadership context- I'll be passing on all this info.

Tory voters are not impressed with woke virtual signalling, I don't know what possess MPs to think they are.

In fact scarp that- VOTERS are not impressed by woke virtual signalling generally.

ChariotsofFish · 26/05/2019 17:58

It’s not woke virtue signalling. He is not talking about transgender issues. He thinks feminism has gone too far and men don’t have enough rights. He’s an old fashioned misogynist.

RosaWaiting · 26/05/2019 18:13

I didn't think for a minute that he was talking about trans issues Confused

MrsOnions · 26/05/2019 18:14

And I still think Dominic Raab is an intellectually challenged bellend so no change there either.
