“Report, block, ignore. It’s only social media. But this week someone who isn’t an anonymous idiot, but a named journalist on a well-known news website, suggested that I and several other women journalists should be milkshaked for the crime of attending a meeting set up to defend the 2010 Equality Act. Yes, for the offence of supporting existing legislation we were asking for assault. Fellow feminist writers say they’re only surprised it hasn’t happened already.”

This is precisely what a misnamed 'Anti Facist ' group in Leeds have threatened to do this afternoon to this woman councillor:

Then I reach page 33 and find The Times getting the Equality Act protected characteristics wrong!

Anyone have a share token for this?

NotTerfNorCis · 25/05/2019 17:09

The anti-fascists have become the fascists.

Freespeecher · 25/05/2019 17:27

She's right - the best way to avoid being milkshaked (or worse) along with those with whom you agree is to decry the milkshaking of those with whom you disagree.

Nothing new here, but it's particularly relevant to GC feminists as it's easy to see how the moral licence of their baseball bat-wielding, death in grease fire-wishing opponents can easily escalate to real-life (indeed 'literal') violence.

nauticant · 25/05/2019 18:09

Turner's right. I heard Zoe Williams' idiotic comments about assaults carried out by left-wing people being jokey, ironic, and sort of nice and I heard similar from Helen Lewis.

JellySlice · 25/05/2019 18:10

I agree. It's like feminism being about supporting the rights of all women, even the women you dislike, even the women whose political views contradict yours, even the women who are transmen. I think Farage is a complete arsehole, responsible for dragging the UK into one of the worst holes ever, potentially responsible for destabilising a large part of Europe, but that does not justify acting violently towards him. It doesn't matter that it was 'only' a milkshake. It was wrong.

TimeLady · 25/05/2019 18:19

My work colleague was smirking about the milkshake over Nigel Farage a few days ago. I kept a stony face and said I though it was wrong to physically attack any politician, and I know she regarded me as a party pooper.

I hope she read this today.

Thank you, Janice. I can't imagine how frightening it must be to have liquid thrown at you by a stranger.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 25/05/2019 18:26

I was disappointed at the coverage it got on HIGNFY last night.

The panel were rightly disgusted at violence from right wing politicians, but thought it was funny when right wing politicians were the target.

ThePurportedDoctoress · 25/05/2019 18:35

I heard Zoe Williams' idiotic comments about assaults carried out by left-wing people being jokey, ironic, and sort of nice and I heard similar from Helen Lewis.

I find this very worrying. I loathe Farage, but throwing liquid over people is disgusting and no serious journalist should condone it.

This has been withdrawn at the poster's request.

Caucho · 25/05/2019 18:42

And this is why people should be careful when condoning Farage being milkshaked (is this a word now?).

I’m not directly comparing what Farage has said to gender critical feminism but as far as I’m aware he wasn’t breaking any laws. Just because you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t make it acceptable to assault someone

woman19 · 25/05/2019 18:46

@DanKaszeta
OK. Regarding this milkshake stuff. Some context on where and how I'm qualified to comment. I spent 6 years in the US Secret Service as one of its senior CBRN specialists.

The anti-fascists have become the fascists
What do you mean?

nauticant · 25/05/2019 18:50

In the words of Janice Turner:

I am a Good Person and therefore everything I do, even a self-evidently bad deed, is rendered good.

woman19 · 25/05/2019 18:59

Offences against the person act offences should be prosecuted if the CPS think there's a case to answer in these alleged milkshake or yoghurt throwing incidents.

As should incitement to violence prosecutions.

The unveiling of the Nazi inspired breaking point posters was followed hours later by the assassination of Jo Cox.

Freespeecher · 25/05/2019 19:06

"Alleged milkshake or yoghurt throwing incidents"!

I don't think there's any doubt they happened, it's just the reaction to them that's being discussed.

woman19 · 25/05/2019 19:10

Alleged milkshake or yoghurt throwing incidents
Until the facts of the case are established, they're allegations.

woman19 · 25/05/2019 19:21

The facts of the Jo Cox case, however, were at least partially established.

There were and are some very ugly reactions to that utterly barbaric extreme right wing attack, by the extreme right, of course.

Freespeecher · 25/05/2019 19:48

I suppose trying to swerve the debate to a tenuous link between a poster and an MP being shot dead is better than the likes of Zoe Williams being ok with people being milkshaked or spat on, but not by much.

FloralBunting · 25/05/2019 19:59

Yes, I totally understand that the left wing fundies think that their version of assault are much fluffier and more acceptable than the right wing ones. Eggs, milkshakes, it all just food products, innit? Ha ha. And then it's not, it's other forms of intimidation like hounding people down the street or chucking less cuddly substances like bleach.

God, I am so sick and tired of this bollocks from the left that minimises and justifies the exact behaviour which they would condemn from the biggest platform if the right wing did it. It's fucking hypocritical and anyone who indulges in that minimization, from twats on Twitter to Owen Jones style columns needs to be directly challenged every bloody time.

To be clear; if you are an 'anti-fascist' and you use violent means to attack and suppress the views you deem unacceptable, then you are not anti-fascist, you are a fascist.

Hope this fucking helps.

nauticant · 25/05/2019 20:07

It's doing God's work against evil doers. Against others who probably shouldn't even be considered to be real people. We know what kinds of places that thinking leads to.

woman19 · 25/05/2019 20:16

I suppose trying to swerve the debate to a tenuous link between a poster and an MP being shot dead is better than the likes of Zoe Williams being ok with people being milkshaked or spat on, but not by much

Sorry, I thought you were discussing perceived 'moral compass' and violence towards politicians?

if you are an 'anti-fascist' and you use violent means to attack and suppress the views you deem unacceptable, then you are not anti-fascist, you are a fascist

To which 'attack's are you referring?

It's doing God's work against evil doers
No idea what this alludes to.

nauticant · 25/05/2019 20:19

It alludes to the fact that ideologies allowed to float free of reality and reason end up being much like religions.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 25/05/2019 20:28

How complacent we are about our peaceful country, stable democracy and largely safe streets. But if we reject the universal values that underpin them during this period of flux and uncertainty they are far from secure.

This sums up very well why I feel quite afraid a lot of the time. I've always loved the UK, I've always felt so proud to live somewhere that didn't go in for the exact kind of bat shittery that it currently goes in for. I don't know how it's all gone so massively fucking wrong.
