I'm gender-critical and I only have one head and no forked tail

Apologies if it's been done before. Getting a bit fed-up with hearing about how dreadful (and other stronger words) gender-critical feminists are and thought it might be illuminating for us all to share a bit about ourselves (nothing too identifying) to demonstrate our very ordinariness.

Hi, my name is *usernamepinched' and I am a gender-critical feminist. I am married, work part-time and have children. I am neither too right nor too left in my politics. I have never been in trouble with the police. I have never been violent. I hate to upset people and will go out of my way to be friendly. But I don't believe TWAW.

The dominant narrative, for those that are aware that not everyone is going to unquestioningly accept that TWAW, is that they amount to just a noisy handful of man-hating radical exclusionary feminists - and so don't need to be heard or taken seriously.

This narrative displays no awareness of the history of the women's movement, and what exactly being a 'radical feminist' implies. That being a radical feminist means that you want fundamental change, and that gender, as we know it, is a construct which oppresses everyone( fe/male) - but mainly oppresses women.

The word 'radical' to many people simply means 'extremist' - and has negative connotations. But really radical just means fundamental, transformative change.

Most of us here are just normal, everyday women - albeit many with a history of activism in left-liberal -progressive type circles. Many of us are mothers and grandmothers, and we come from all walks of life; all areas of the country; and we are involved all different kinds of occupations, jobs & roles. Some of us have a spiritual or religious faith or bent; some are avowed atheists. But we all know bullshit when we see and hear it - and we care deeply about women's ( & children's) rights; dignity; safety and well being.

usernamepinched · 23/05/2019 13:19

See, that's what I was going to say Grin

No history of activism in left-liberal-progressive type circles here though. Always been a more 'can't be arsed, live and let live type' BUT, I will not let the hard fought rights of women be swallowed up by this cult. Give transgender folk all the rights they want, but not at the expense of other's rights. If you met me, you'd never believe in some people's eyes I am akin to the Devil himself. I don't hate men (I have a lovely one here with me), but I don't believe in one sex being dominant over another (in whatever guise it is presented, transgenderism just being the latest tool to keep us down).

What about you lot? Anyone with a forked tail and two heads? Or lots more normal, middle-of-the road women?

And not all of us are white English.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 23/05/2019 13:24

I agree. In this new dawn of self identity, I very strongly identify as a gender critical feminist - and make absolutely no apology for it. This, Trump, Brexit and climate change have all combined more or less equally to make me mightily pissed off most of the time.

Outanabout · 23/05/2019 13:25

I don't consider myself a radical feminist since I quite like men, and unlike most feminists think men and women are innately different. Of the two sexes, naturally I prefer women for company, but I'm heterosexual. I have so little interest in religion/spirituality that I don't even think of myself as an atheist. I have two children, now adult.

I'm dumbfounded at the fact that so many apparently sane people believe that men and women can change sex, and that they haven't noticed the explosion in numbers over the last few years, like the spread of a cult or a new religion. To me they're like those people who believed the end of the world was signalled by the year 1000, then 2000, then the appearance of comets.

usernamepinched · 23/05/2019 13:27

snap bibbitybobbityyhat ain't that the truth. Apologies for not putting in all the theory and correct terms as supplied by Justhadathought Truth is, I am not one for theorising, I just know a load of old bollocks (literally) when presented with it (them).

usernamepinched · 23/05/2019 13:28

Precisely birdiebyes, but TRAs have their narrative (script).

I like the company of both men and women. My favourite person is my husband.

I also do a spot of gardening occasionally. I play a musical instrument. I read books about the second world war. I crochet. I adore my cat.

Of course, all these things do not proclude nasty tendencies, but they have yet to show themselves. Although the noisy neighbours have had 'fuck off' mouthed at them behind their backs Blush

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 23/05/2019 13:37

Yes, not radical, never read anything on feminism, happily married to my husband for 20 plus years, full time work and 3 kids, BAME.
I really don't have the time for this shit.
But it's too important to not be challenged. The TRA position is basically nonsense. Can't let nonsense be codified in law without a fight.

usernamepinched · 23/05/2019 13:38

Welcome JamB4cream you sound like another normal person.

I don’t what normal is, but yes I’m gender critical! I’m Māori, been voting left all my life till this crap, I’m vegan, married to a man, Mum to a teen woman who is also GC, autistic like her Dad and we are all often told we are weird and not normal but none of us care!

There is no typical GC person as far as I’m concerned. Just people brave enough to say, hey, this sounds ridiculous and potentially dangerous.

Justhadathought · 23/05/2019 13:45

Radical feminist doesn't mean that you hate men. Being a radical feminist doesn't mean you can't see or accept differences, either. To me being radical implies fundamental change, in a way which can also embrace the female body, biology and typical 'feminine' roles - and see them as equal in value, strength and power. But It also means that people should be free to pursue their strengths, talents and ambitions regardless of their biological sex.

usernamepinched · 23/05/2019 13:46

JessicaWakefieldSV Wow, a Māori? I think you are the first Māori I've ever come across in person (so to speak). Hello!

You're right of course, there is no typical GC person, but we are painted as such, in a negative light.

Ha!

Though I wasn't trying to be "correct"; I just enjoy the process of writing, and in an aesthetic & stylish way. I used to be an English teacher

picklemepopcorn · 23/05/2019 13:49

I'm Pickle, I'm a woman of a certain age, have never been to a protest and was late to start voting. I'm gender critical, not because of my Christian faith which teaches me to accept everyone but because men are not women. Women are not what they wear or what they think.

I can tie myself into pretzels to be kind, welcoming, accepting- but men are still not women.

Also, I have become aware in the last ten years that women still get the short end of the stick in almost every area, and that any steps taken to ameliorate that should be reserved purely for biological women.

usernamepinched · 23/05/2019 13:54

Justhadathought you do it very well, it is much appreciated.

Welcome picklemepopcorn You sound lovely - where do you hide your forked tail? Grin
