I wasn't there - but, it seems to have been a meeting which has upset this trans woman, who runs a refuge. twitter.com/mridul_wadhwa/status/1131305475046367232

anyone know what happened? and how brilliant it was

Yep you'll find tweets from the speeches under the #MeghanSP hashtag

Sounds like it went well, and there was cross party attendance too from what I can work out. Last I saw Meghan was in the pub enjoying Edinburgh's fine hospitality. Good lass.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 23/05/2019 06:35

Wadwha typically making it all about meeeeee! Looks like this is a preemptive attempt to justify all the eye rolling and sniggering other posters have pointed out MW was doing while concerns about women and children were raised!

KatvonHostileExtremist · 23/05/2019 07:04

I understand it must be uncomfortable to hear the perspective of women.

Must be absolutely awful to have failed
in silencing us

Needmoresleep · 23/05/2019 07:20

Her twitter claims she manages a rape crisis centre. Surly that means she is used to listening to others in a non judgemental way, and not centring her feelings.

2rebecca · 23/05/2019 07:25

I find the idea of a male running a rape crisis centre and making their children call them mother chilling and totally inappropriate. The trans lobby say they don't harm women yet some of them behave like this.
Some jobs should be female only

Needmoresleep · 23/05/2019 07:25

She works for Rape Crisis Scotland’s and is a trustee of YWCA Scotland. Surely some of Meghan Murphy’s description of Canadian experience would have been of interest, even if she disagreed with it.

Comment by the justice policy officer of the Scottish Trans Alliance in the Times today.
No mention of self ID anywhere:

It was a fabulous meeting. Meghan and Bec spoke powerfully and articulately and there was amazing feeling of solidarity in the room, with women from different parties speaking up for women and feminist principles.

Great comments from the women's sector too about the concerns they and service users have.

Seven Hex and Helen Steel were there as well!

Saddened that Mridul has chosen to misrepresent event in this way rather than contributing and trying to have a conversation. Even more disturbed that women who were not there would choose to believe this because it confirms their prejudices, especially Sandy Brindley as this will not reassure women who want to raise concerns with her. Thoroughly inappropriate for the head of Rape Crisis Scotland.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 23/05/2019 10:02

There's an article in the Times allegedly wanting trans people and feminists to work together (as long as feminists first abandon all concerns about safeguarding of children and the eradication of women's rights) Comply....comply...comply...

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 23/05/2019 10:03

Did Becky Kauffman go to the meeting, then?

Am delighted some of you were there. And quite jealous.

Amazing progress - being in the same room as the TRA (which I regard MW as being) and them having nothing to say, no counter arguments (apart from, "waaaaah, this is not what I WANT") is very powerful.

Thank you for going and standing up for women.

Glad it went really well.

Yes, very worrying that someone consistently puts themselves and their own interests before women's interests. And won't consider any points raised.

Illuminating actually. Tells you a lot about a person.

Precisely the reason why single-sex spaces should be single-sex.

EweSurname · 23/05/2019 10:07

Joan McAlpine on fine form as usual, responding to Wadhwa

Sorry you feel that way, esp as you were so keen to attend. I don't recall anyone discussing you and you didn't speak. But Seven Hex, a transwoman who attended, made a very considered contribution which was warmly received

I am surprised someone like yourself with such seniority in the VAW sector laughed at women discussing male power & women's boundaries, in a considered way - often saying how difficult it was because they did not wish to split progressive movements.
The audience included a Women's Aid worker who said single sex spaces are important. I am glad reps from official women's organisations accepted my invitation. Hopefully we can step that up in to become a constructive discussion with women who have concerns

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 23/05/2019 10:54

So pleased this went well

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 23/05/2019 10:56

Boom. Joan is brilliant.

As far as I can tell/read nothing happened other than speakers putting their points across very well and Mridul making a bit of a tit of herself sniggering and glaring and basically behaving like a petulant teenager. None of the people who were there recognise her account of events (including Joan) and have taken her to task on it. Meanwhile there's a whole bunch of creeps getting their morning woke cookies with the daily "OMG that sounds awful! Can't believe they made you sit through that! Must have been actual literal torture!" etc etc like she was dragged there kicking and screaming, pinned down and given a million paper cuts rather than her actually asking for an invitation, turning up and behaving like a dick while people made perfectly reasonable points about women's rights. What a drama queen. God they're tiresome.

Genderfreelass · 23/05/2019 11:34

Sounds like it went well. Glad cross party members attended.

Betty lol sounds like Mridar made a right tot if them self Grin

Sillydoggy · 23/05/2019 11:39

Here is the bbc write up.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-48366184

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 23/05/2019 11:42

Wasn’t Mridul the one who tweeted JM asking for an invitation to the ‘Megan Markle’ meeting? Grin

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 23/05/2019 11:45

Gosh, that BBC write up is a lot better than I expected. Great quotes from Meghan (Murphy, not Markle)

Genderfreelass · 23/05/2019 11:50

Oh is she that one Bernard Grin

Sillydoggy · 23/05/2019 11:51

The bbc Scotland radio reporting was almost unbiased! They have been letting Megan’s words do the talking for them.

ThePankhurstConnection · 23/05/2019 12:06

I wasn't there but this reaction made me so frustrated. The reports of this person (who runs a refuge) tittering and eye rolling through women discussing their fears and issues with male violence and concerns that the way legislation is going they will be exposed to opportunists is actually a bit frightening. This refuge is near me, thank goodness I have never needed it, I know I wouldn't feel listened to by this person if I had to.

To sit there and not even contribute or try to listen and consider another view and then to belittle it on SM having had no input whatsoever is a cowardly cheap shot. I don't care how this person identifies, what they were born as or what they believe this behavior only makes me think they are the last person who should be working with vulnerable women who need to be respected, listened to and believed because they have shown they won't even try to do that in a professional capacity. I thought I was jaded and beyond 'repeaking' after all these years. Turns out I was wrong, I'm at the top looking out on the desolate landscape of identity politics all over again.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 23/05/2019 13:47

It MUST be peaking MSPs though.

If they read what MM says, what James Morton says and then what MW says - well, one of them is reasonable and articulate, one is dogmatic and one is simpering.

dragongirlx · 23/05/2019 13:53

I was there but over the other side of the room to this person so I didn't witness their behaviour.
Ample opportunity was given for people to speak and this person didn't even attempt it.
Megan, Joan and the woman from the Vancouver women's library (can't remember her name) were all great. It was also good to see MSPs from a range of parties there and getting involved.
I do know there were people from women's aid services there. Not just the one women who spoke up, who were listening intently and agreeing with a lot of what was said.
Its clear this person only attended after being called out by Joan when they tried to accuse her of not inviting them and their intention was to mock and lie about this to make themselves the victim.
