"Unbelievable bit of womb bothering in Starbucks at services . A pregnant woman got her Caramel Macchiato and the guy behind the counter said

‘Oh , it’s for you . Do you want me to make a decaf?’

She said ‘No, thanks’

Him ‘No I should because caffeine is bad for the baby’"

Ffs - who the fuck does he think he is? I hope someone has complained to Starbucks

Orchidoptic · 19/05/2019 20:21

I got loads of grief for drinking coffee while expecting. Tried giving up coffee once before and on a 13 hour day I became a zombie. What is it with everyone else thinking you are public property once pregnant?

leomama81 · 19/05/2019 20:26

Bloody hell Hmm it's rubbish anyway, even the tightest guidelines say you are fine with a cup or so a day. And even if it wasn't, who does he think he is? The pregnant women as public property thing is galling

newtlover · 19/05/2019 20:56

under his eye

Foxmuffin · 19/05/2019 20:57

That was probably her caffeine hit to keep her going for the day!

Fortheloveofbaths · 19/05/2019 21:00

I was told by my fil today that I shouldn't be drinking a glass of Diet Coke 🙄 I rarely drink it and recently if I'm feeling sick it's the only thing that helps weirdly! He also told me I'm too big for how many weeks I am and made various comments about me going on my holidays (maternity leave). Arse.

KarenTheCashRegister · 19/05/2019 21:27

I had that once with a Diet Coke when I was at work (id given up tea and coffee as they seriously set off my morning sickness) - how I didn’t ram the empty can up hiz fucking arse I will never know.

Echobelly · 19/05/2019 21:30

Fuck off. And I hate those wine bottles that have picture of a pregnant woman with a 'No' sign crossed over her. Like women are all drunken trollopes and we can't just stop at one glass if we want.

I actually mostly didn't want any alcohol when I was preggers, but I had the occasional glass of wine or half pint and thankfully no busybody stopped me

isabellerossignol · 19/05/2019 21:31

It probably won't be long until someone descends on the thread to tell you that caffeine is very dangerous when you're pregnant and that even a cup of tea is risking miscarriage, and anyone who says otherwise is in denial and doesn't care enough about their baby to be able to abstain for a few months.

SentientPotato · 19/05/2019 21:39

I HATE this, absolutely hate it. Womb bothering is a good way to describe it!

Genderfreelass · 19/05/2019 21:44

I rarely drink fizzy drinks but when pregnant one of the few things that stays down is cola so I don't have a lot of choice but drink it 😕

It's all well n good having guidelines but when you vomit 24/7 for the entire pregnancies any fluids are better than none so the caffeine police can sod off.

AncientLights · 19/05/2019 21:46

Before we know where we are women will be prosecuted for drinking coffee or alcohol while pregnant. If we aren't already, that is.

wibbletooth · 19/05/2019 22:31

Echobelly - completely agree with you on that one. Particularly as the research has shown that although too much alcohol is obviously very bad and can damage the baby, a little here and there as you fancy - say a unit or two a week (can’t remember the actual results but in that ballpark) can actually be helpful and ‘enhance’ the baby (not really sure what the opposite of damage is in this scenario!) - ie they get better scores on the different measures tested than the mothers that had no alcohol.

But instead of reporting the results properly they have decided that women are too thick to understand the concept of ‘a little is fine, but more can be bad and lots more is very bad’ and demonised any of woman who dares to even think of having a half a glass of wine at the end of a hard week. Crazy.

TheInebriati · 19/05/2019 22:52

Womb bothering is good but they are also the self appointed womb police.

butteryellow · 20/05/2019 08:57

I went off anything like coffee/tea/booze for the first few months, stayed uninterested in coffee/tea for the whole pregnancy in fact (drunk 2 litres of orange juice a day instead towards the end - I couldn't get enough! - that couldn't have been great for me either!)

By the time I was 10 days overdue (massive, knackered, uncomfortable very, very cross about just about everything), even my midwife was telling me to just relax in a warm bath with a large glass of red!

They've done the research - full cohort analysis - and my grandmother, as is so often the case, was right - a little of everything does you good.

LangCleg · 20/05/2019 09:09

massive, knackered, uncomfortable very, very cross about just about everything

That was me for the entire pregnancy both times!

I would not have responded well to Starbucks womb bothering!

RespecttheCountryMember · 20/05/2019 09:43

Men, over-estimating the relevance of their opinions yet again.

bigbadbadger · 20/05/2019 11:29

The response should always be a steely stare and "what baby?"
That shuts them up.

Fortheloveofbaths · 20/05/2019 12:58

My response was to ask dh for a refill of my drink...which he promptly got and made a big fuss of :-) reminds me why I married him sometimes! 😊😊

Qsandmore · 20/05/2019 13:05

Think I’d have to say “oh don’t worry it balances out the heroin” wankers. Like the term though!

Valkarie · 20/05/2019 13:14

Well if they are bothered about things being bad for people then they need a bit of a revamp. No more cakes, pastry, crisps or sausage sandwiches. All of the cream based drinks need to go, so do the fake fruit and sweetened coffee ones. As for decaf, well the process of removing caffeine is chemical and usually lets some through still.

All customers are now allowed water in a reusable cup only!

SentientPotato · 20/05/2019 13:22

I genuinely fear that we are heading this way. There was a thread in AIBU the other day and many many posters are of the opinion that there are foods/drinks that should be banned for pregnant women. I can't get my head around viewpoints like that!

I didn't see that thread but I have seen similar in the past. I don't understand how any woman could think that is a good thing. It's a slippery slope and would leave us with less rights than at any time in history.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 20/05/2019 15:52

Yeah, this seems quite common. When I was pregnant I asked for a steak medium and was told that I would 'have' to get it welldone as it was bad for the baby otherwise Hmm I instead went to the restaurant across from them, who served me what I wanted without fuss.

GabrielleNelson · 20/05/2019 15:59

I note that some of the appalling anti-abortion legislative changes recently passed in the US include measures to investigate miscarriages so they can prosecute women considered to have done something that might have brought on the miscarriage.
