The US charge is computer conspiracy, the term is 5 years, not life. Under US law, the press is protected from accepting classified info, but not for helping a source break the law (ie, fool around with passwords).
I'm not sure why people think notoriety would rank maximum security. Notoriety and fame tends to protect prisoners. Ex., Manning was put under suicide watch out of spite, but was removed from it after lawyers intervened, using public pressure.
Mockers is correct. Extradition to the US is miles easier from the UK than from Sweden. That's how you know Assange's public defense was a lie --- like how he spun the rape charges as just women spurned.
