The person who researched and came up with the term “Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria” has finally been able to re-publish her paper about it.

There was a lot of uproar that it was transphobic www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/08/new-paper-ignites-storm-over-whether-teens-experience-rapid-onset-transgender-identity

and Brown university decided to delete a press release about the paper

www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/brown-university-criticized-over-removal-transgender-study-n90674

It’s finally been published!

@LisaLittman1
I am delighted to report that, after a rigorous post-publication review, a revised version of my paper has been published by PLOS ONE. I am pleased that my work has withstood this extensive peer-review process. /1.

I am amazed that my research has received such widespread attention, including over 146,500 views. And I am grateful that my work has contributed to a global interest in the rapidly changing presentation of adolescent-onset gender dysphoria. /2.

I am committed to protecting the rights, health, and mental health of all people, and this includes transgender people. /3.

Some people are using this research to imply that it represents the experiences of all people with gender dysphoria and to negate the fact that transition can be beneficial for some. That is a misuse of this work and is not acceptable. /4

Some people are helped by transition and some people are harmed by transition. There needs to be more research to better understand how to maximize benefit and minimize harm. /5

I look forward to future research on this important topic. Gaining a better understanding of the development of gender dysphoria will allow us to better help the current population of teens and young adults experiencing it. /6.

There’s also an article out in quillette:

Oh that's brilliant news!

Having seen ROGD in DD friendship group, this is the area that terrifies me the most.

I think that link is to the correction rather than the paper itself ?

journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0202330

Good it's in PLOS-one which is open access.

EweSurname · 19/03/2019 21:18

Oh yes sorry, that was the last page I was looking at! Thanks for the right link

PLOS ONE’s capitulation can only have damaged their reputation - such grovelling for what actually amounted to minimal changes

PLOS ONE
@PLOSONE
After consideration of the scientific concerns raised to us,
@PLOSONE
has corrected the study on gender dysphoria in adolescents and young adults. The decision was made after post-publication review by additional experts.

Although the study represents a valid contribution to the scientific literature, its framing, given its limit to parental observations, needed to be corrected and clarified. A Formal Comment by a member of our Editorial Board provides further context.

We recognize that issues with the study should have been addressed prior to publication. We have and will learn from the case, and since have completed an internal restructure so that we can better support our Editorial Board &are better equipped to serve individual communities

We want to extend our apologies to the trans and gender variant community and others affected by the shortcomings of the initial review. PLOS is an inclusive, open and non-discriminatory publisher that deeply cares for the concerns of this community.

PLOS ONE has confirmed to me that even though Lisa Littman's paper was officially "corrected," there was no false information published in the original. I think this is an unusual deployment of the term "correction."

Clinicians at the Tavi describe "Adolescent Onset Gender Dysphoria" - so it's not just parents who have noticed this.

Well done, Lisa Littman! Star

If transgenderism is based in reality, then research will only further their cause, because there will be benchmarks for indicators, stages, interventions and outcomes.

Research can only be beneficial to that small minority of the population who experience genuine distress because of their bodily dysphoria.

Research will also help children and young people experiencing gender dysphoria, by helping us understand the sources and interventions which will best help them to grow into healthy adults with whole bodies.

Research won’t harm this population nor will it negate their lived experience. People suffering mental illness don’t argue that research negates their existence - they participate and hope that understanding might lead to effective treatments.

On the other hand, if your identity politics is made up of a mixture of fetish, misogyny and bullshit, you have everything to fear from the spotlight of intellectual enquiry.

heresyisthenewblack · 20/03/2019 00:10

Nothing demonstrates better that transactivists seem to be allergic to the scientific method than their complete contempt towards research like Dr Littman's into the potential causes of gender dysphoria in adolescents and young people.

MhairiV · 20/03/2019 00:14

"Sixty three per cent reported at least one mental health or neuro-developmental disorder in their child."

That's another very significant figure. One of the things I can't get my head around is the complete unwillingness to engage with the idea that it's linked to mental health or other neurodevelopmental issues. Why isn't that one of the first considerations given the obvious psychological and psychiatric overlaps? We know so much more about how to treat them than we do about gender identity issues. They're often treatable. It's just crazy.

Cloven · 20/03/2019 05:38

lol at how much of that correction consists of patiently explaining how research works to a bunch of fuckwits who didn't understand what a descriptive study is.

The eyerolling throughout the whole document is almost audible. I enjoyed the part where she took seriously the TRA claim that parents may not have noticed signs of dysphoria in childhood, assumed a 100% underreporting rate from oblivious parents, and came up with an all-new estimate based on those assumptions that 97.6% of the adolescents in question did not have gender dysphoria as children.

Oh, and the part where she responds the the allegation that this was a survey of unsupportive parents by listing ways in which parents can provide support for children and finishes off the list with "support for their critical thinking skills." Grin

And this! The trajectories for adolescent-onset gender dysphoria are not well understood and additional research is desperately needed. Additional research is of course exactly what TRAs are trying to prevent.

Excellent "correction." I enjoyed it very much.

Katvonmythicbiowoman · 20/03/2019 06:25

This thread is pure gold.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 20/03/2019 06:42

Oh this is fantastic news. Well done Dr Littman, excellent "corrections" Grin

There is a good interview with Lisa Littman in Quillette:
quillette.com/2019/03/19/an-interview-with-lisa-littman-who-coined-the-term-rapid-onset-gender-dysphoria/

She comes across so well - she explains that she’s always been interested in public health and that Caring about the health and well-being of individuals and families has been one of the guiding principles of my professional and personal life.

She also lost her job as a result of her research as her contract was not renewed because she was not seen to be gender affirming. She is clear that transition helps many people but says that we need to be better at deciding when it is not the answer.

adultFemaleElf · 20/03/2019 07:34

It is simply appalling that she lost her job due to undertaking research.
The world will look back on this era in despair, the shutting down of free speech and critical thinking.

AstonishedFemalePersonator · 20/03/2019 07:40

Excellent news. Thank you, @LisaLittman1, for standing by your research.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 20/03/2019 07:42

I can’t believe what she went through. Well done Dr Littman!

And the rush towards medication by doctors

And children being coached what to say
Ta Lisa
So awful that you lost your job for doing this

BettyDuMonde · 20/03/2019 09:39

Brilliant. Let’s hope our government is paying attention, seeing as they are supposed to be looking into ROGD right now.

EweSurname · 20/03/2019 09:43

There are a lot of trans activists who are posting as though they have been vindicated, and that the corrections made undermine the whole paper Confused

This alternate take on reality is very baffling

Some other institution will snap her up.

She's brilliant.
