Dontcha just love it when goady fuckers come on here and post something they clearly believe is a mic drop thread, then it gets taken apart by the FWR regulars?

I have a very eclectic music collection from many decades, much of it from when I first started buying records by people like Queen, David Bowie, Boy George, Alison Moyet, Kate Bush, Hazel O'conner, Abba, and I have to admit, the Bay City Rollers. Lots of men and women, but interestingly they all presented however the hell the wanted and were just wonderfully talented people.

If anyone reading this likes Big Mama, you’ll likely enjoy Sister Rosetta Tharpe too (‘The Godmother of Rock and Roll’).

Rosetta actually played on Wilbraham Rd Station platform in Manchester once, in the rain, unsurprisingly!

There is an excellent documentary on Sam Cooke on Netflix at the moment, illustrating the conditions that black musicians were working under at the time. It was particularly hard for women to break through (and those that weren’t conventionally attractive due to age/size were shit out of luck).

Big Mama was a bigger talent than Elvis (imo!) but everyone knows how that played out.

One of the greatest things about the internet, for me, personally, is the enormous archive of vintage music and dance available via YouTube. The stuff from before and during the Civil Rights Era, documenting black musicians and dancers is particularly precious. Massive thanks to all the hobbyists that located and uploaded it.

Right, i’m off to use Emma’s suggestions as the background to my to do list!

Crosspost! Jinx!

Watching the video of Beyonce singing Proud Mary in front of Tina Turner makes me so happy.

Katterina I swear it's Martin Lewis in that poster. He's looking for the bugger who stitched his pockets up as he now has cold hands. Not good for piano playing Grin

rather different to some of the suggestions here, but I've always loved Suzanne Vega, and recently went back to her 99.9 F album, which has been my background music at work this week

I love her in the same way I love Paul Simon - beautifully crafted lyrics about interesting things over lovely melodies.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 06/03/2019 11:52

and on a rather different note, Tunnel Vision by Kate Tempest

I find it very hard to listen to - the lyrics are excoriating, but I think it's magnificent
