Workshop description:

*Over the last year or so, we have seen an increase in anti-trans rhetoric in the media and the rise in trans exclusionary TERF groups.

Come to this workshop to learn more about transgender rights, why TERFs are so dangerous, and discuss the ways in which standing up against trans hatred is directly connected to fighting racism, capitalism and the prison system.*

yorkinternationalwomensweek.wordpress.com/2019-programme/

Its worth looking at the misleading image for the event img.evbuc.com/https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.evbuc.com%2Fimages%2F57333744%2F148688826680%2F1%2Foriginal.20190224-113314?w=800&auto=compress&rect=0%2C140%2C794%2C397&s=33f8a9c8e3a10f6a812ed509492d5255

From a quick look through of the programme cant see any workshop offering the gender critical view on trans rights vs. women's rights.

Not sure who is funding the week of events but it is supported by York (calling itself Human Rights City) and University of York Centre for Women’s Studies

So once again women’s rights is seen as not important by Human Rights and Women’s Studies.

Angry Sad

If I had known about this earlier I would have gone,.its a 10 minute bike ride from my house! I would have loved to have heard what they had to say. Just found out the person hosting this is running for local council in the May elections for my ward. I really hope I get a knock at the door from her asking for votes.

GraceMarks · 04/03/2019 21:23

I know of this person. They are "non-binary" and they hang around on local feminist pages on Facebook looking for things to become furious about. That accompanying graphic looks genuinely unhinged and I would be surprised if the event attracted anyone who isn't already in their social circle. I wouldn't have attended even if I'd known about it, because the possibility of getting my head stomped would have been quite real, but I would be interested to know if anyone did go and what happened...

Criticalfoxhat · 04/03/2019 21:41

Ooh interesting Grace. Thanks for that. I've never encountered this person before. Im still to find a gender critical group in this city, its v frustrating.

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 04/03/2019 22:11

Louise Moody is in York

mobile.twitter.com/godstopper1981?lang=en

Her twitter is protected but she's definitely gender critical

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 04/03/2019 22:24

That Musson who was on the Facebook ban terfs page is standing as well. R(oger) melly has submitted several (thousand) fois about which universities profit from/endorse the arms trade. This appears to be their primary political activity. What a shower York labour are.

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 04/03/2019 22:29

Well this type of shit works both ways. I'll certainly be pointing out to friends how misogynist certain candidates are.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 04/03/2019 22:41

Good plan. I wonder how keen the women of york would be to vote for someone who they are told hosts events calling for a war on them.

R0wantrees · 04/03/2019 23:05

This was the NUS Women's conference workshop, 'How To Deal With Terfs' workshop run by two male transpeople Rowan Davis and Eden Ladley.
Discussion of the slideshow led to former MN intern involvement:

Criticalfoxhat · 05/03/2019 13:47

I have emailed both the local labour party branch (haha) and the organisers of the IWD programme. Ill update if I.have any response but im not expecting one!

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 05/03/2019 22:27

I think it's worth pointing out to them The judge in Miranda's case agreed T*rf is a derogatory comment.

How dare labour party candidates behave in such a fashion?

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 05/03/2019 22:27

Oh and well done!

stumbledin · 06/03/2019 00:29

Really agree with both HaroldsSocalledBluetits comments earlier in the thread.

Despite "knowing" in my head how far the trans agenda has infilitrated so many women's / feminist organisations I just could not believe they would have a workshop with such an anti woman sentiment.

They could at least have made the effort to put on a debate about the issues.

And as for the poster - laughable on one level but just part of the endless nudge campaign to present trans as the victims of women.

Angry

And thanks to Criticalfoxhat for doing something positive and pro active.

I kept meaning to try and find out who funded them.

I'm sure they get some funding from York University Women's Centre. The uni is a bit of a hotbed of this promotion of trans above everyone else - all the newer buildings have "all genders welcome" toilets...

The York International Women's Week WordPress page is worth a read. It states its mission is to allow all women to have a voice after being silenced for too long. As long as they say the right things, though, eh?

As for what gets included in the programme, afaik people can just make submissions and it all gets put in. In the past, they've included workshops that are only vaguely relevant to women so I don't think they discriminate much. I know one of the organisers is a friend of the person who ran the terf workshop so its inclusion doesn't surprise me at all.

Well done to criticalfoxhat for making a stand on it. It's disgusting that a supposed celebration of York's women included a workshop on how to fight and silence us.

Criticalfoxhat · 06/03/2019 09:44

Thanks everyone. Im just so angry about this. I see it is starting to spread across twitter so im hoping it might invoke some kind of response. Im still waiting though!

RockyFlintstone · 06/03/2019 10:03

There will be NO filming or photography allowed at this workshop.

Lol.

I wonder if this 'threw a trans person down the stairs' comment is referring to the Jam Jar event.

Not reeeeeeeeeeeelly what happened guys is it?

RockyFlintstone · 06/03/2019 10:06

I think the fact they have to twist, embellish and basically make things up shows they know they don't have a leg to stand on.

The thing is, I think some of these people listen to the GC arguments and they know that they make sense. Some of them must do. But they just cant reconcile that in their head because then it means that they would not be able to be 100% 'pro' trans. Hence why they come out with the increasingly twisty stuff to try and keep their eye on the end game of 'being on the right side of history' as they see it.

RockyFlintstone · 06/03/2019 10:09

Thinking about it, I am seeing less and less of 'trans women are women' as an 'argument' (although some people still appear to think that if they close their eyes tightly and say it over and over it will be true). They are realising that it just doesn't cut the mustard any more. But because they don't have any actual arguments left after that mantra, they then have to move onto discrediting the opposing view, name calling, exaggerating events. It really has all the hallmarks of people who have nothing to offer in terms of debate.

theOtherPamAyres · 06/03/2019 10:40

It's quite droll that they use the term 'terf wars'.

They see no irony in a term associated with Turf Wars - where one gang (or business) uses its muscle to overcome rivals by force and take what isn't theirs.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/03/2019 11:38

Note that they ban filming and photography while Women's Place who are supposedly evil terfs are completely open about their events.
Now, why might that be, I wonder?
Perhaps because the 'terf war' gang are essentially dishonest in the information they are disseminating and if they let the wider community see it it will be challenged.

YY. Cognitive dissonance.

Speaking of which, the Norwich videos are now up!

On the programme website, it says "Please note that some events are for self-identifying women only and are marked as such below."

So let me get this straight. At some events celebrating International WOMEN'S Day, people with vaginas will not be permitted to attend? So just a lot of penises in a room? And there is no sense of irony whatsoever?

WTAF?!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/03/2019 13:58

No, it doesn't mean that. It means women who admit they are and men who think they are. Men who admit they're men can't come and neither can women who insist they're men.
Not sure about people who claim to be neither.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/03/2019 14:02

'people who believe they are women...'

Except I am not sure some of them actually believe it.

JuneOsbourne · 06/03/2019 14:05

Ah ok, I get it now. Good to know I wouldn't be welcome as I don't identify as anything. I'm female though.
