Someone from mermaids takes a transexual to court for transphobia.

youllhavehadyourtea · 02/03/2019 23:14

Miranda is ace.

Yeahnahyeah · 02/03/2019 23:20

Nice to have a clearer idea of what went down.

Popchyk · 02/03/2019 23:21

Gets their arse kicked.

MaryContrary1995 · 02/03/2019 23:22

This will open the eyes of so many people now. It's going to make talking about all these issues so much easier. The Daily Mail aren't my favourite rag 😂 But they've written a very strong punchy article here that will speak to many people. Miranda, you're ace 😊👍👍

brilliant

it's great to see this reported in the press

reckon the Guardian will run with it? Wink

teawamutu · 02/03/2019 23:45

Will they fuck. Unless it's 'Mermaids marketing manager labels judiciary transphobic after court case dropped'.

When I cancelled my subscription I wrote a regretful email explaining why. They never replied.

Redshoeblueshoe · 02/03/2019 23:51

And what will the Beeb say ? Transphobic hate case dismissed due to insufficient evidence
Which is not really an honest portrayal of what happened, but they could actually defend

NicoAndTheNiners · 02/03/2019 23:51

Costs awarded to Miranda. I assume that means Helen/Mermaids have to pay? Excellent!

Lysistrataknowsherstuff · 02/03/2019 23:58

Nico It was brought by the CPS so the public picks up the bill.

LizzieSiddal · 03/03/2019 00:04

From the judge re harressment. “You have to show a course of conduct and at the moment we have one tweet.*

I hope the Police take note.

MrsFogi · 03/03/2019 00:05

Initially kicked of by West Yorkshire Police - why am I not surprised?

NicoAndTheNiners · 03/03/2019 07:58

Well I hope somebody complains to the cps and West Yorkshire police about the waste of taxpayers money.

AuntieCJ · 03/03/2019 08:00

Love Miranda.

HermioneWeasley · 03/03/2019 08:29

Poor Miranda having to go through this.

Really backfired for Helen Islan though, didn’t it? Nobody had heard of her before, but that’s an unusual name and everyone will now know her kid is transgender.

pastabest · 03/03/2019 08:40

That's going to be really confusing for anyone not familiar with the key players in this, because if just skim reading and looking at the pictures and picture captions you could mistakenly assume that it's the clearly transsexual person who has brought a case of transphobic harassment against the woman who is clearly a woman and not a transperson. But it's the other way round.

I'm not sure the article actually highlights the ridiculousness of the situation.

misscockerspaniel · 03/03/2019 08:44

Islan distances herself from the case by saying that it was the CPS who decided to prosecute. Hmm.

I am so sorry that Miranda suffered such a stressful event and a big shout out to his excellent barrister, Amanda. And thank you to the Mail for shining a light on this matter. Where is the BBC etc etc?

Prinstress · 03/03/2019 08:50

I agree pasta

Trying to explain the story to my DP who is pretty clued up left me tongue tied.

Cwenthryth · 03/03/2019 09:39

Yes - when it says transgender hate crime, two female names, and pictures show one clearly transsexual person and one woman, it’s very easy to assume the picture of Miranda is ‘Helen’ and vice versa. The bizarre nature of this case needs it writing in black and white that a transsexual was accused of transgender hate crime by a woman who is not herself trans.

sackrifice · 03/03/2019 09:57

Where is the BBC etc etc?

The BBC, instead of using someone who was in the actual room at the trial, who was already scheduled to speak - decided to cut her from their discussion today on the very topic they are discussing.

So, I'd say the BBC are playing hide and seek pretending they are not behind the curtain when everyone can see their glittery size 12s sticking out from under it.

Sicario · 03/03/2019 10:08

Dear Miranda. I would very much like to buy you a drink. You rock.

Blissx · 03/03/2019 11:04

Absolutely. The fact that Islan has already stated numerous times on social media that her kid was transgender and had already ‘come out’ and yet was allowed by the CPS to argue that she was negatively affected because Miranda had ‘outed’ her kid, means serious questions should be asked about what cases the CPS decide to run with!

AnotherLass · 03/03/2019 12:11

I'm confused about this. Can someone who understands these things better than me explain this to me?

The Daily Mail article says that Miranda's case was the first criminal prosecution for transphobic hate crime in the UK.

Government stats on hate crime (www.gov.uk/government/statistics/hate-crime-england-and-wales-2017-to-2018) says that 1651 transgender hate crimes happened in 2017-2018. 9% of these were "violence against the person with injury" and 24% were "violence against the person without injury"

Did none of these crimes go to trial?

If so, I feel that there is a serious issue with reporting them as "hate crimes". How do you know if a crime occurred, if it never went to trial? But also, why didn't they, if they involved violence?

happydappy2 · 03/03/2019 14:40

It’s awful that Miranda had this hanging over them for 10 months. They are now also banned from Facebook for saying a word that rhymes with fanny....Is utterly crap that TRAs insist on self identification yet won’t allow Miranda to identify himself as a transsexual.....
Is this not a case of transphobic harassment?

andiewithanie · 07/10/2019 11:54

This is an interview with a former employee of Miranda's (Miranda is the publisher referred to in the article. It's worth reading closely. Whilst I appreciate she's politically useful I'd be suspicious of her motives given what this woman says.

Once a manipulative bully...

"So I would stay until midnight, begging people for adverts. And that became the game our publisher [Miranda] would play on me because she knew I would fight to the death before my pages got cut."

"I don’t think that cover did anyone involved any favours – it just cemented my publisher’s notion of how she could divide and conquer her staff until they all quit, one-by-one, and leave me broken."
