Webberley is setting up in Glasgow?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 02/03/2019 13:33

This is on Transgender Scotland's Facebook page:

"For those still on the long NHS waiting lists, I received an email from genderGP to inform me they are opening an affiliate service in Glasgow city centre offering private treatment, voice therapy, counselling, injections etc... at a more affordable price than other private options
No use to me now but I have the email address to contact for more information if anyone is interested
email : [email protected]
Subject : Scottish Clinic"

I thought she was suspended? The FB thread is pretty interesting, lots of people saying they would avoid the service because they know people who landed up with liver failure under her care. Thank goodness some trans folk have sense.

Anyway, anyone know if Webberley is still practising?

Her husband can still practice I think. I thought hey were working out of Portugal? Seems like they might options. If that was her house on the panorama doc the other night you can see they do ok and she works from home and dishes it all out online so maybe it doesn't matter where she's based?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/03/2019 13:39

Maybe a lot of those things don't count as medical treatment and she can run the services overall and rake in the money without doing any actual injecting.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/03/2019 13:40

There must be a huge amount of money to be made by someone who can offer a one stop shop.

userschmoozer · 02/03/2019 13:43

Can you imagine running any other medical service in this way? What are your chances of offering unofficial advice about ''off label'' abortions and avoiding prison time?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 02/03/2019 13:53

"First do no harm" unless the person really, really wants to self medicate potentially harmful hormones in which case, crack on and don't be a bigot

Glasgow you say?

iklboo · 02/03/2019 14:03

She is suspended. Which means she shouldn't even be seeing patients, even for counselling.

youllhavehadyourtea · 02/03/2019 14:05

Is she suspended in Scotland? Its a different NHS.

iklboo · 02/03/2019 14:11

GMC registration is the whole of the U.K. It doesn't matter which NHS or private. Suspension from practise is suspension.

ToeToToe · 02/03/2019 14:14

How is this even allowed?

youllhavehadyourtea · 02/03/2019 14:15

And isnt her husband under investigation too?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 02/03/2019 14:41

Yes, Lord. Glasvegas.

Wonder what Sandyford would have to say about it, actually. Good point.

What?

Is this being investigated at all, that some of Webberley's patients are reporting liver failure?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 02/03/2019 15:01

I assumed that was part of the investigation into her fitness to practice.

Good point, they just said that on a transmasc site many of them were trying to sue her.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 02/03/2019 15:06

I thought the Sandyford was the only Scottish trans service, weird that another clinic is being set up in Glasgow, rather than in, say, Edinburgh.

And given the restrictions on Helen Webberly at the moment, pretty brazen.

Popchyk · 02/03/2019 15:50

"I assumed that was part of the investigation into her fitness to practice.

Not as far as I am aware. It is the first time I have heard that some of her patients are reporting liver failure.

If you know anyone affected then have they reported this to the NHS?

Have they thought about contacting the press about this? They can remain anonymous, I'm sure.

Bloody awful that they have to go through this.

TurboTeddy · 02/03/2019 16:35

Liver problems are a known possible side effect of anti androgen medication and liver function should be monitored whilst taking it. If her patients have suffered actual liver failure then she has done her job very badly. But hey they're only kids it's not as if it's important.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 02/03/2019 16:39

Sandyford was the only Scottish trans service

It is NHS as opposed to private though.

Popchyk · 02/03/2019 17:01

This is precisely why the NHS providers are subject to so much pressure by the trans lobby.

So that the private sharks like Webberley can swoop in to set up private clinics to "relieve the pressure" on the NHS.

And then the NHS will effectively subcontract to private outfits like Webberley's via shared care agreements and the like.

The bullying and harassing of NHS clinicians (as evidenced in GIDS recently) is done by precisely those people who have expensive services to sell.

Oh there is. Low overheads too. There’s a kiwifarms thread on green and mermaids, and someone on there has worked out how much roughly her previous clinics were pulling in. Previous clinics that were slammed for failings in practice such as giving out prescriptions online in as little as 17 sec.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/03/2019 18:02

I wonder where it is. Glaswegians won’t hold much truck with this sort of thing.

Bowlofbabelfish · 02/03/2019 19:04

The CQC report says one of these clinics did 6700 prescriptions a year. Also that she charged 150 quid an hour. So that’s the best part of 3/4 million a year, with virtually zero overheads.

There is a LOT of money to be made. Imagine how much more with a chain of clinics all ‘taking the pressure off’ the NHS.

kooshbin · 02/03/2019 19:25

In the recent Panorama documentary, "Trans Kids: Why Medicine Matters", Webberley is shown at her computer. It's on a small desk, tucked under the stairs. And the computer screen appears easily viewable by anyone else in the house. I hope she's not using that for confidential work.

miri1985 · 02/03/2019 23:33

I'm really curious about who is providing HW with medical indemnity insurance and what kind of price they're charging if they're aware of her reputation
