A Period Emoji Has Received The Go-Ahead

I’m all for removing the shame of periods but when would you ever need this? I can’t say my menstrual cycle comes up that often when I’m texting or updating my FB status.

I imagine teens might?

Carowiththegoodhair · 06/02/2019 20:38

I imagine it will be appropriated by some people.

Errrrrrr · 06/02/2019 20:38

Ha! I am on the borderline of millennial and this makes me feel like one. I'm often messaging my friends about my period!

ThinkIveFoundYourMarbles · 06/02/2019 20:39

"A survey found that almost half of women aged 18-34 believed that a period emoji would make it easier to discuss periods with friends and partners."

Wow. Millenial communication skills are at an all time high. Hmm

Seriously though, I can just see smart arse men using this in text messages to each other because their female colleague didn't smile sweetly when one of winked at her earlier.

StrippingTheVelvet · 06/02/2019 20:43

I would totally use this in group chats to turn down plans Grin

Notevenmyrealname · 06/02/2019 20:49

StrippingTheVelvet
I never thought of that. I take it back. Grin

Marbles that was my first thought that it would be used in a sarcastic way by men more than by women, but maybe I’m assuming the worst.

WokerThanWoke · 06/02/2019 21:02

I’m sure it will be considered transphobic and therefore banned.

Iused2BanOptimist · 06/02/2019 21:03

That's a rather lovely drop of blood. I can see people like me using it erroneously when we cut our finger. Or donate blood. Fun times beckon. Hmm

TakenForSlanted · 06/02/2019 21:08

Errrrrrr, same here. Periods are definitely one of my more Millennial character traits.

I've also been known to make my poor (all male) higher ups desperately uncomfortable by mentioning period pain. (Side note: much love to my direct manager for offering me a lower back massage because it helps his wife but only if I was totally comfortable with it - that was adorable!)

So I'm on board with the period emoji. Grin

PositivelyPERF · 06/02/2019 21:42

Ha! The DM caused outrage amongst it’s male readers by saying that there is going to be a ‘small penis’ emoji. They’d faint at the thought of a period emoji .

tobee · 06/02/2019 21:43

Saw this earlier on Sky News App. But they have it this way. (Screenshot as not sure how to link)

Twiztid · 06/02/2019 21:45

I'm in my 30s and I'd use this emoji.

tobee · 06/02/2019 21:45

Interesting that it's reported by Sky as "gender non specific " rather than "same sex couples ".

Atalune · 06/02/2019 21:46

I would think “give blood” with that emoji!

ErrolTheDragon · 06/02/2019 21:47

Interesting that it's reported by Sky as "gender non specific " rather than "same sex couples ".

Looks like twins to me.Confused

WhatNow40 · 06/02/2019 21:54

I'll be using it often. I volunteer for the Red Box Project and talk 💧 every day. (Blue because we can't yet cope with red being used in conjunction with sanitary products).

WhatNow40 · 06/02/2019 21:55

Although as someone who ttc for 5 years, the celebration background does annoy me somewhat.

QuietContraryMary · 06/02/2019 22:08

IT

IS

NOT

A

PERIOD

EMOJI.

unicode.org/emoji/charts-12.0/emoji-released.html

Name: drop of blood
Keywords: blood donation | medicine | menstruation

It's literally a drop of blood.

You could use it to say you are going to murder someone, in combination with a gun or knife emoji.

QuietContraryMary · 06/02/2019 22:11

It's a drop of blood, it hasn't been implemented yet - the implementation is vendor specific.

The celebration background is very unlikely make it into anyone's implementation because it's unnecessary and busy.

This is one implementation, on Emojipedia:

Doobigetta · 06/02/2019 22:34

FGS. I can see why teenagers might use this- periods were about the only topic of conversation for about two years when I was 13 or 14. And it being the 80s, we managed to do it using actual words. Probably in the immediate aftermath of having spoken to someone else’s parent on the phone. And now they can’t do it on their own private phones without the help of pictures.

NeurotrashWarrior · 07/02/2019 17:03

Just remembered I voted for this. Can't remember which image I chose though. What ever it was, it was rejected.

"Sadly, the design didn’t get accepted. But, unwilling to give up, we teamed up with NHS Blood and Transplantt_ and submitted a new proposal for a blood drop emoji (the runner up design in our public vote) to be included on keyboards everywhere – and we’re thrilled to announce that, with your amazing support, it’s been included in the February 2019 emoji release!"

NeurotrashWarrior · 07/02/2019 17:05

I'm very annoyed on their behalf though as a period is very different to just bleeding blood.

NeurotrashWarrior · 07/02/2019 17:06

So Unicode, once again demonstrating the erasure if women.

CountFosco · 07/02/2019 17:30

Interesting that it's reported by Sky as "gender non specific" rather than "same sex couples"

My phone already has a gay couple and a lesbian couple emoji so this is something different.
