Just had a chat about DP and I having to live in the car (could happen) and the jobs available to us.

Clean, filed, preferably polished nails would probably be a requirement for me. Him not so much as he works outdoors anyway so rough hands = good.

I bit mine for most of my childhood and remember having awful-tasting chemicals painted on them to stop it while I was years from puberty.

It's another thing isn't it? I think the gender pay gap studies should take into account the gender expenditure gap. Tights, makeup, Botox, nails, hair, waxing etc

OP posts:

Bras. Tampons. Paracetamol for period pain.

NeurotrashWarrior · 05/02/2019 19:43

And apparently we don't woman properly if we don't have lingerie.

Bumblebee39 · 05/02/2019 19:47

I'm pretty sure men do jobs that require clean hands too. And women do jobs that don't. Confused

Why would you be living in a car?! Totally misses the point of the thread

Dothehappydance · 05/02/2019 19:48

I don't have any of them (in the op, I have bras etc) my hair is fairly low maintenance, I hate nails, so as long as I had a pair of clippers I'd be good.

They're not necessities really.

Dothehappydance · 05/02/2019 19:48

I wear trousers for work, I don't need tights.

I don't use botox. I could. But I don't. I don't do my nails either. Or wax. Or wear make up.

Fuck, I'm getting womaning all kinds of wrong..

Tbh, OP these are 'gender' requirements aren't they? Not 'sex' requirements.

Tampons, bras, paracetamol - sex needs.
Everything else is gender.
The pay gap is a sex pay gap, not a gender one.

SlimGin · 05/02/2019 20:02

Clean nails should be a requirement for most jobs (out doors and most manual labour aside) - everyone should have clean hands at work. I don't think polish is expected of women.

Badstyley · 05/02/2019 20:44

Elaborate haircuts, makeup and fake nails are all a choice, no woman actually needs to spend her money on them. I get my hair cut for a tenner every couple of months and I’ve got a comb and some nail clippers.

I really do begrudge having to spend 35 flippin quid a pop on a bra. Large breasted women really do get the shitty end of the stick when it comes to bra expenditure.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 05/02/2019 20:47

This isn't going how the OP envisioned.

newtlover · 05/02/2019 20:48

absolutely, and then someone tells you that the best ones are from Bravissimo and cost double that

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 05/02/2019 20:54

How is Botox a necessity? If you're contemplating living in your car and you're spending money on Botox, I don't know where to start. Wax is not a necessity either. You can shave your legs if you want to remove hair and, unless you're a lapdancer, it's unlikely that you have to have a waxed bikini line.

Yes, female grooming is more expensive for the average woman. But most jobs do not actually require full makeup and polished nails. I definitely don't have to have polished nails for work and I don't think my hands need to be cleaner than those of my male colleagues. Biting nails is a bad habit that can be painful and lead to bleeding fingers. I have done the bad tasting varnish thing too, but it wasn't because there was an expectation that I must grow my nails and have them varnished. I am sure boys use the stop n grow too, because nail-biting isn't good, whatever sex you are.

GroggyLegs · 05/02/2019 20:57

It's the time as well as the cost though.

I thought this last night as I removed eye make up, then face make up, oil cleansed, moisturised, dyed my eyebrows, plucked my eyebrows, put on tanning moisturiser and then attacked my scaly feet.
It took nearly all of Silent Witness.

I am absolutely gender critical, but I'm sad to say I do feel more confident if I conform Sad it's breaking a lifetime of conditioning

Badstyley you're not wrong about bras.

Cwenthryth · 05/02/2019 21:06

Tights, makeup, Botox, nails, hair, waxing
Nope I do none of these things regularly and still a woman. And a proper member of a profession with letters after my name and everything Grin

Bras. Tampons. Paracetamol
Yeah got me there. The only bras I’ve found that give adequate support and don’t cut into me are an eye watering £85. I have a mooncup tho so no ongoing costs there.

Agreed I think the top list is gender stuff ie sex stereotype performance. No one has to have Botox.

MargueritaPink · 05/02/2019 21:07

I've never had a manicure in my life. I bite my nails. I don't own a nail file and haven't worn nail varnish since I was 15.

Oddly none of this has had any effect on my employment prospects.

Boyskeepswinging · 05/02/2019 21:12

My DH spends a small fortune on his shaving equipment and spends far longer doing that every morning than I do putting on some Aldi moisturiser.

And some of the men at work wear make up and I do not.

MargueritaPink · 05/02/2019 21:13

It's another thing isn't it? I think the gender pay gap studies should take into account the gender expenditure gap. Tights, makeup, Botox, nails, hair, waxing etc

This is nonsense. No one needs to have Botox or waxing for employment reasons (obvious exceptions aside)

I've never had a manicure or a waxing. I've never had a job where wearing makeup was compulsory. And what have tights got to do with anything? I wear tights, I don't own any socks. Tights are simply legwear. 40 denier and upwards are cheap as chips and last for ages.

residentofglenbogle · 05/02/2019 21:14

not related to nail varnish but I was told in a previous job that I had to wear make up to work. I was pretty offended tbh, more so that I did some digging and found out that it's legal for an employer to request female employees wear make up ... !!

anniehm · 05/02/2019 21:15

Well hairbrush, sanitary supplies, basic toiletries and first aid kit would be essentials but I would probably get the dogs stuff first!

MargueritaPink · 05/02/2019 21:18

I'm not gender critical. I'm not a feminist. I wash my face at night with a Clinique liquid soap and apply a bit of Clinique moisturiser. It takes me 5 minutes. In the morning I repeat the exercise and apply a bit of Clinique foundation. It takes me 5 minutes.

Frlrlrubert · 05/02/2019 21:26

residentofglenbogle

My employer would only insist I wore makeup once... I either wear none or go 'full goth' I have no middle gears.

I was thinking about this a couple of years ago when a female friend posted in fb about how it takes women much longer to get ready for an interview, because if all of the above, but I'd had a (successful) interview that week where I wore no makeup, hair up, non-iron shirt. It took me no longer to get ready than it did a man.

(I did have to get my husband to bring in DD in the lunch break as she was still mostly EBF and it was easier than pumping that day, but I think that scored me more 'resilience' points if anything, since the post was for months later so bf wasn't a factor for the position)

Badstyley · 05/02/2019 21:45

I don’t know how people can stand to have those long fake nails. My sister can’t bare to be without them. Don’t they get in the way? Long nails are great for picking at things but otherwise practically they’re a nightmare. Also they damage your real finger nails. It’s a big swiz, because women go and get them done, then when they try to grow their own nails back they’re papery thin, so they have to go and get new ones put on. They’re a self perpetuating market. Honestly if women just allowed their own nails to grow and clipped them occasionally they’d be as strong as anything. Mine are lethal if I let them grow for any length of time. I tend to stab myself with them, and the clippings are really sharp. Anybody fucks with me when I’ve let my nails grow a bit they’re gonna regret it.

AssassinatedBeauty · 05/02/2019 21:56

Clean and tidy nails is surely a request for anyone that works in an area where hygiene or presentability is necessary? But you're right about polish being required - if that was the case for women I think I'd be pushing back against that. Difficult, I can imagine though, if you are already homeless and don't want to also lose your job.

LangCleg · 05/02/2019 22:32

Tights - nope, wear trousers and socks
makeup - nope, possibly mascara for occasions
Botox - nope, never, Christ on a bike
nails - aside from the kids forever stealing the clippers and not putting them back, nope
hair - mobile hairdresser, £15 every 2/3 months + £5 tip
waxing - nope, not the shaving either
sanpro - probably less than male razors/shave gel

Bras are annoying and cost money. Bah.
