Some aspects of growing up in the 80s were so great though, weren’t they. Aside from Marilyn and the other Blitz kid types really pushing the boundaries, even those in the real mainstream had no problem in flexing their masculinity- and I have a soft spot for a bit of guyliner to this day...

All the boyfriends I had in the late 80s wore guyliner and lippy, lived in squats/dole crash houses and shagged billions of women. It was a small but perfectly formed counter culture with lots of hitching, blagging, wheeling and dealing plus everyone was in a band/making art/writing. Good times. And the men were resolutely, absolutely men - embracing their femininity as a male was part of the fuck-em-all attitude. Good times.

Well yes, in the 80s men wore make up and dresses without anyone feeling the need to call themselves a woman. And not just pop stars either. Plenty of lads I knew rocked eyeliner, lippy and something glamorous on a night out. Some were gay, some were straight. None were women

I think this is why us old bints can't understand the recent fuss over this. We've seen it all before, when it was truly expanding the definition of what it meant to be a guy.
