Fanny cradock and transgenderism

How is she anything to do with the new gender politics? According to The Times, a celebration about her in Waltham forest will be ‘very queer’, including style, food, gender politics and aspiration. I thought she was just a cook but correct me if I’m wrong.

You could flog them on ebay - they are having a resurgence.

Everything she makes looks really unappetising. Confused

Mincemeat omelette

Makes you gag, doesn't it? I'm so pleased I was able to bring Fanny's mincemeat creations to a wider audience.

Check out the choux pastry ones - and she stuffs a turkey in the first episode...

I do hope Mrs Beeton doesn’t get dragged into all this. I’ve never had any interest in Fanny but I swear by Mrs Beeton.

It’ll be Delia Smith next 😱looks like anyone’s fair game these days.

Heratnumber7 · 14/01/2019 19:01

She was quite odd-looking, with heavy, artificial-looking makeup and hair that had been processed to within an inch of its life

I think this was a pretty normal look back in the day. Everyone's hair was processed - shampoo and set was the order of the day.

Deliriumoftheendless · 14/01/2019 19:40

She also said “I would no more put an egg in a refrigerator than I would put a baby.”

I have followed that advice ever since I heard it. She was right!

theOtherPamAyres · 14/01/2019 19:56

I thought that Fanny was great. She was bossy and took no nonsense.

I can imagine that, had she been alive today, she would chase non-binaries and transgender people out of the women's spaces, armed only with a whisk and a droll one-liner.

Yousignup · 14/01/2019 23:21

CRADOCK only has one D! I never knew!

No it wasn't normal.

The mincemeat omelette looks vile- as do the pancakes.

Isn’t she just a gay icon, as said above, like Judy Garland?

CrispbuttyNo1 · 15/01/2019 00:08

Is that assistant Delia Smith? It looks very much like her.

Tony2 · 15/01/2019 00:19

I'm old enough to remember watching her quite clearly, and she was an odd bod, although thrift was important to her. I vaguely recall that she had a bigamous marriage, and possibly before Johnny, she had younger men on stage as her assistants for a short while. Polyamory and toy boys, and enough mascara to scare the horses, must tick some boxes!

MrsCatE · 15/01/2019 00:26

Knew someone that worked with her. Heavy makeup was to cover up scarring from a fire. Apparently, she had some really horrible unhygienic habits too.

HerFemaleness · 15/01/2019 00:32

They're all on Youtube, but this is my favourite:

I could have quite happily lived the rest of my life in ignorance of that mincemeat omelette.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 15/01/2019 00:49

I'm just Shock at how she rolled the Swiss roll. Mind you, I wouldn't want to argue with her either — if she wanted you to roll you'd jolly well roll!

And that's really not a "dusting" of icing sugar. Grin

Purplewithgreenspots · 15/01/2019 02:53

It was a surprise for me too, the one d. I do wonder if a d was dropped for effect.
My mum told me she was unhygienic, which is why I never had an interest. At least if Beeton had problems keeping clean, the books don’t say soGrin.

You mean she was an unhygienic fanny? Shock

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 15/01/2019 06:21

I’d never heard of her, but now I love her. Her food looks repulsive, (and I love mince tarts), but I deeply admire her domineering manner - no namby-pamby coddling of the viewer. It’s Fanny’s way or the highway.

I have renounced the stomach-churning slop of the hilarious Sandra Lee and henceforth swear allegiance to Ms Haddock. Cooking in full evening wear. What a woman.

Illyria47 · 15/01/2019 07:08

I have just literally spat my tea over the keyboard over your comment re unhygienic fanny. Brilliant.

ChesterGreySideboard · 15/01/2019 07:33

The BBC have put some of them on iPlayer. The Cheese and Wine episode is a joy to behold.
She used to do a lot of it live, which is a hell of a skill.
However it did lead to one episode where she was making a roast dinner and dropped the chicken on the floor. She picked it up, picked off any fluff and said ‘remember, you are alone in your own kitchen’ while plonking it back on the plate.
