Comments appear not to be buying this fairytale.

‘and as recently as 2007’ interviewer sighs ‘that was a reprint...’

It sounded really terrible - this lecturer was accusing people of bestiality, apparently!!!! Unfortunately I had to leave the room whilst the student was on (as in the radio only on in one room - wasn't 'triggered' by it Grin )- going to have to listen now Grin

So confusing

The first British man to give birth has opened up on the struggles he experienced being pregnant.
Hayden Cross, 22, was born a girl named Paige, but despite living legally as a man for three years, decided to put his transition on hold in 2016 so he could fulfil his dream of becoming a parent.

R0wantrees · 10/01/2019 09:03

This person expected the NHS to provide a surrogate?

No, Hayden had battled for the NHS to carry out egg harvesting and storeage.
Hayden then said she had anticipated using a surrogate mother so as to have a biological child.
If Hayden had been successful in getting NHS to harvest and freeze eggs, it would seem likely that he (or others in similar circumstances) might seek to get NHS funded IVF treatment for the woman who was offering to try to become a surrogate mother.
The NHS does not 'provide surrogates'.

It does though in some situations provide fertility treatments for a small number of women whose fertility has been affected by cancer / cancer treatments. The translobby have sought parity with the NICE guidelines for fertility treatment for people diagnosed with cancer.

*I've made a genuine error with pronouns above. Its really difficult to write about female biology, fertility treatments and pregnancy and change to male pronouns. I saw Hayden's interview, he is endearing and has his convictions. I see a young somewhat naive but ernest female who has a much-loved beautiful daughter.^

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/01/2019 09:09

I didn’t hear what the author had said but cottoned on that he was coming from a very strict religious standpoint, so by surprises then.

But making statements like ‘male penis’ and that lesbians are homophonic if they won’t date a man (even is he says he really really really honestly is a woman) arent statements and ideas that are insulting, very upsetting and absolute tosh are ok to spout as gospel then?

Debate is dead. Long live Newspeak.

For anyone interested in the meander of the subject and talking about the Today Programme on the radio, I recommend listening to something in a similar vein from PM yesterday:

www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0001ygp

The segment starts at 27:30. It's great.

As so often when I read threads like this, I find myself thinking I'm in some sort of nightmare and will eventually wake up. There have always been people with all kinds of psychological problems, which depending on the severity and the extent to which they affect the individual and others around them, may at times be considered an illness necessitating treatment. At other times it's considered eccentricity, endearing or otherwise. Then we go through a period of social change and something that was unusual becomes accepted normal behaviour. I get all that.

But this is just unreal. How can we have got to the point where a biological female doing the most female thing anyone can ever do, i.e. pregnancy and birth, BY CHOICE, is described as a man?

More coffee.

Not just described but celebrated, given attention and their belief reported as truth/fact.

I have a nephew with ASD who has recently become fixed on this. That a man can be pregnant and give birth.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/01/2019 09:21

Male penis, d’oh😖

Professor Dennis Hayes who was interviewed heads 'Academics for Academic Freedom'

When Hayes referred to Oxford being 'red' for free speech, it refers to AFAFs traffic light ranking for free speech:

Well, he's good at mans-plaining, I'll give him that...

Bittermints · 10/01/2019 11:53

Just listened again. What happened to the idea that students go to university to be introduced to ideas and to learn to evaluate them critically and if necessary argue against them? That young fellow seemed to think that just being exposed to a nasty idea was actively harmful and that students who were paying for a university education had the right to insist on never being exposed to ideas they didn't like. I despair.

R0wantrees · 10/01/2019 12:05

Bittermints Its a toxic combination of purchasing power, fragility, entitlement and lack of critical thinking!

Couldn't agree more, EJennings!

Abolishing student grants and massively increasing fees has created a feeling amongst students and their parents that they are consumers and the university staff are there to serve them, which includes ensuring that they are always comfortable and happy and nobody is nasty to them. Taken to its extreme, it's the fault of staff for not giving them adequate teaching and support if anything goes wrong along the way or they don't get the grades they feel they deserve/want.

Additionally, of course, universities are competing to get students and one big factor in student HE choices is league tables, which include student feedback results. Of course students should be able to complain about things if merited, but universities give far too much prominence to student feedback in judging how well departments/lecturers/admin staff are doing. I used to be an administrator working with students and it was pitiful at times to see how frantic senior management were to avoid student complaints, even if they were clearly frivolous.

And finally, there is no doubt in my mind at all that there's been grade inflation. It was rare to get a First back in the early 80s when I was a student. Now it's not. There are far more students now than there were then. If anything, I'd have expected the %age of students getting a First to go down rather than up.

FWRLurker · 10/01/2019 14:13

This person appears clearly female to me and has demonstrated the essence of femaleness.

They aren’t very feminine but neither are millions of adult female people who call themselves women.

I am sorry for this person that they feel so horrible about their female body that they will resort to medical means to change it of course.

I do wonder at them raising their child “as a girl”. How early will they tell their kid that they can change sex if they want to? Will they learn we all have a gendered soul before or after their learn about eggs and spent / vagina and penis?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/01/2019 14:13

When I went to uni it wasn’t ‘the norm’ or assumed. Now it seems much.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/01/2019 14:15

Eek phone going wild... now it seems expected that you toddle off with your chequebook to get your degree and raise Merry hell if it isn’t to your liking. When I was a student you were grateful they let you in

Why are two completely different issues being conflated on this thread?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/01/2019 14:23

Mea culpa. I as listening to R4 whilst reading the thread this morning and got sidetracked.

I had my very brief comment re the story of "British man who fell pregnant etc " deleted and I struggle to know why since I said nothing derogatory about Hayden and in fact deplored the death threats he had received. However I went back to the Guidelines and think it was because I said, not man, a young woman, which could be construed as denying Hayden's self identifying as a male. I have read more on his story and hadn't realised he has been living as a man for 3 years. The fact remains only a biological female can carry a baby and give birth. The media needs to report stories like this accurately as it is manifestly untrue that men can carry and give birth to a child. The headline should have read British Trans man gives birth. I noted Hayden was on Lorraine's show. She has had Hannah and Jake Graf on too. I worry that the personal struggles of young people such as Hayden's are being glamourised not to say being confusing as to basic biology. One can only wish Hayden good luck in his new life, with his daughter.

VickyEadie · 10/01/2019 22:00

Still want to know what 'living as a man' means for this person.
