I just read it via Twitter. Don't know if it was the whole article but I was able to see the comments too. twitter.com/AbigailShrier/status/1082020092584448000?s=19

I am glad to see the WSJ publish an op-ed piece on this. The Twitter comments were quite sane, too, (with the exception of one person who has Issues).

TimeLady · 07/01/2019 07:49

A very powerful piece, which deserves to be widely read. Thank you for sharing it here.

CallingDannyBoy · 07/01/2019 07:52

That’s a glimpse of our not too distant future. I remember a while ago someone starting a thread about therapists and the protocols being changed to exclude any exploration of why someone was feeling gender dysphoria into affirmation only. I hadn’t realised the full consequences then - unfortunately I am now.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 07/01/2019 08:33

Good article

I dont really understand why some people have such a problem with the idea that something like ROGD can exist

It doesnt mean that every transitioning female has it...just that it exists

Bittermints · 07/01/2019 08:33

CallingDannyBoy, I'm really, really hoping that in this instance the UK will learn from the US's mistakes (and Canada's too, I think - and Australia's?) and not go down the automatic affirmation route. Surely this is a huge medical scandal in the making? I think I read that patients at gender clinics are asked to sign some sort of disclaimer before they start treatment but can they really sign away all their rights so easily? Many of them have longstanding mental health issues and/or are on the autistic spectrum. Surely an HCP who neglects to take a detailed history and treat a patient accordingly is negligent, disclaimer or no disclaimer?

I wonder what the medical insurance schemes are thinking about this.

hackmum · 07/01/2019 08:43

Great to see an article that doesn't pull any punches. About time.

ImPreCis · 07/01/2019 09:14

I didn’t realise that Planned Parenthood are mixed up in this. A ‘horns of a dilemma’ moment as I find yet another organisation that I can no longer support.

KittiesInsane · 07/01/2019 09:27

That's one of the gut-wrenching things, isn't it? Every organisation founded to be kind and generous and to ensure that people were valued and wanted -- they've been enthusiastic about affirming and supporting transgender identities, because that's their default. Be kind, be tolerant, understand how someone might feel, work to make them feel better.

The naturally heartless and dickish have had much less time for the ideology.

Vegilante · 07/01/2019 10:00

ImPreCis Planned Parenthood is a major force in this. Though services provided vary amongst the different individual PP affiliates, most of them are now heavily focused on helping both natal males & females transition.

My local PP offers not just the usual cross-sex hormones, but transgender HIV-related care, as well as guidance on "silicone pumping" for transwomen who want bigger, rounder breasts, butts & hips. The days when PP was a place primarily for females to access contraception, abortions, smears & other gyn services are long, long gone.

LangCleg · 07/01/2019 10:05

I think this is the first mainstream US article to talk about ROGD? Finally! It's a strong article.

Datun · 07/01/2019 10:22

Planned Parenthood are also the ones who hosted the cotton ceiling workshop. (How to break down the resistance of lesbians to sex with bepenised transwomen).

It is a good article. And has that horrible ring of truth to it, that will send a chill into the heart of parents of girls everywhere.

As it's such a widespread phenomenon, I can only hope that the sheer number of young girls being caught up in it will bring it to the fore that much quicker.

terryleather · 07/01/2019 10:27

PP has funding from the Pritzker family.

Vegilante · 07/01/2019 10:37

PP also hands out that infamous brochure "Safer Sex For Trans Bodies" which teaches young people that the correct names for their genitals are:

DICK: We use this word to describe external genitals. Dicks come in all shapes and sizes and can belong to people of all genders. (NB: transmen - natal females - typically refer to their clitorises as dicks, penises, cocks & so on)

FRONT HOLE: We use this word to talk about internal genitals, sometimes referred to as a vagina. A front hole may self-lubricate, depending on age and hormones.

STRAPLESS: We use this word to describe the genitals of trans women who have not had genital reconstruction (or “bottom surgery”), sometimes referred to as a penis.

VAGINA: We use this word to talk about the genitals of trans women who have had bottom surgery.

WTF, right? And I love how now only trans gals who've had SRS get to have vaginas while us natal females are stuck with front holes.

ProfessoressWoland · 07/01/2019 11:22

Seriously? Is someone trolling the US via Planned Parenthood? Do they not fact-check the materials they are given?
Talk about undermining your own work. I hope the brochure explains that front hole intercourse with a strapless can lead to pregnancy.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 07/01/2019 11:29

If all that is true about PP, I am sadly disappointed in them. If any organisation should be supporting women - and not throwing them under a bus - it should be PP.

CallingDannyBoy · 07/01/2019 14:59

Bittersweet - I really hope we learn in time as well.

Vegilante · 07/01/2019 15:31

As I subscribe to the WSJ & know how hard it is for non-subscribers to access its content, I posted this article on ROGD earlier today, knowing at the time that MN would eventually take it down due to copyright. I have no problems with that, as I am a big believer in laws protecting creators's rights to their own intellectual property.

But I do have a problem with MN replacing my post with "Message withdrawn at poster's request." I made no such request.

nauticant · 08/01/2019 15:32

I've just realised that the current Wikipedia entry for "cotton ceiling" says this:

A play on the similar term "glass ceiling"[2], the "cotton" refers to trans women's underwear as an example of how their perceived genitalia prevents them from being recognized as women.[3][4]

Note the "trans women's underwear". It looks like last month trans activists were horrified to realise that we'd mistakenly understood the term to mean breaking into lesbians' underwear rather than transwomen escaping from theirs.

The edit is justified here:

I get feminine care from PP. My next appt is this summer. I'm planning to bring this shit with me, wave it in my doctors' face, and ask her to explain what the fuck is going on.

I mean what the actual fuck!
