Fucking Bully Billy Connolly and his sick 'joke' about wife murder

Wauden · 28/12/2018 22:58

Just saw a tv programme and have had my eyes opened to Bully.

He was on Parkinson back in the 1970s and told a 'joke' about a man who killed his wife and buried her body under a pile of earth but left her bottom sticking out. Wife murderer was asked why he left her bottom at the top and he replied, it was to park his bicycle.
Cos it's really funny, right.
Michael Parkinson laughed his head off. But then he has form for misogyny.

Don't give me any 'but he's a national treasure' bollocks.

meant to add, I met Billy Connolly a couple of months ago waiting for a flight from the Island of Lewis. I would never dream of bothering any celebrity normally but it was a tiny airport lounge with about a dozen people so I just quietly went up to him , apologised for intruding and said I just wanted to thank him for all the laughter over the years. God, he looked so old and frail. I turned to leave and he shook my hand and smiled and said "Oh that's great, you're awfy kind!". He looked pretty bewildered to be honest. it was a bit sad.

I didnt like the swimming pool sketch either. But that was one item. Dave Allen qustioned and talked about a lot of things that others didnt dare to like religious hypocrisy.

Vaudeville star Sophie Tucker told him that when he reminisced about his time growing up in Ireland that it came across as interesting and very funny.

He also hinted at the abuse that took place in some of the Catholic schools.

He even pointed out that within the church itself that Mother Superior is as high as a woman can go . Whereas men can be priests, bishops, monsignors, cardinals and all the way up to the Pope.

In his 1979 Christmas special he was talking about food and how worrying about cholestorol and carbohydrates was a relatively new thing then.

Then he jokingly predicted that in years to come there would be health warnings on food.

What do we have now? The traffic light warning system on food.

I've never seen the Dave Allen swimming pool sketch, but it sounds very out of character with the rest of his humour. We loved watching him and, as Irish Catholics, were in stitches at his church and religious sketches. Always loved his closing comment of "Goodnight, and may your God go with you"

I like him. He does a great commentary on Islamic terrorists. Getting angry about a joke is never a good thing. Humour is often subjective. Look at Frankie Boyle. One of the greatest people who ever lived but his jokes are very rude (but funny)

MagnificentSevenHeaven · 29/12/2018 17:57

So a 1970's joke is an issue worth a thread now?

Praying like fuck the OP never googles Chubby Brown or Bernard Manning then....

OunceOfFlounce · 29/12/2018 18:05

Wow, op's made so many of you so angry!

MargueritaPink · 29/12/2018 18:12

Look at Frankie Boyle. One of the greatest people who ever lived

That has to be a joke

AntiSocialInjusticePacifist · 29/12/2018 18:16

Humor is subjective totally respect the OPs view on it. Wether I personally agree with it or not. Unless we get to the point where we start talking about banning or censoring jokes I’m golden. If we do reach that point I’d object in the strongest possible terms.

Bluntness100 · 29/12/2018 18:21

How do you get through the day op, what with all the time you need to spend clutchIng at your own arse?

I love billy Connolly and he has made me laugh many a time. As has Dave Allen, who could also be very close to the bone at times.

Seriously. If you really think for one moment billy Connolly thought murdering women was funny you need to seek some serious help.

Shockers · 29/12/2018 18:23

Frankie Boyle is on mumsnet!

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 29/12/2018 18:24

People can like a comedian but still think some of their jokes are offensive. You can think something is offensive and still have a sense of humour.

It’s not black and white.

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 29/12/2018 18:24

Billy Connolly has made a career from joking about tough subjects which aren’t funny but he manages to make them funny.

Aye that joke wasn’t one of them, but still. Have you heard anything of his on sectarianism? He’s made strides there!

A shit joke from before I was born isn’t really something to get so angry about, especially given the open and regular misogyny being spouted now!

We all have different senses of humour. Some people - absolutely no idea why - think Mrs Brown's Boys is funny.

But the OP chose to post this in feminism, and is essentially accusing Billy Connolly of misogyny. Which is pointless. You could have made the same joke about a man's arse sticking out of the ground rather than a woman's. The joke itself would be just the same. So it's not about misogyny (or misandry).

So now it's morphed into a claim that it's a sick joke. Well, if it was about a real murder, and taking the mickey out of that, then it would be a sick joke. But it's not based in reality at all.

So OP I think you're entirely missing the point - not sure if it's deliberate or not?

There's nothing wrong with saying you don't find him funny. But it's not misogynistic, nor is it a sick joke.

dementedma · 29/12/2018 18:46

frankie boyle one of the greatest people who ever lived????????

Great post if you are Frankie himself. anyone else, and you seriously need your head examined.

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 29/12/2018 19:21

Frankie Boyle is a dick, who says appalling things to try and get a reaction. Not the same as Billy Connolly at all.

MagnificentSevenHeaven · 29/12/2018 19:25

Frankie Boyle is a dick

He offends people who are looking to be offended.

If you actually listen to him he's really insightful, on the ball & funny.

greendale17 · 29/12/2018 19:27

I always thought he was a
Knob. Never liked the guy.

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 29/12/2018 19:33

If you actually listen to him he's really insightful, on the ball & funny.

Not about autism and autistic people he isn’t. I’m not looking to be offended, neither am I looking to be attacked for ratings by a wanker desperate to be relevant.

Melroses · 29/12/2018 19:41

Always remember a male engineering friend hiring a video of his for a lads' evening of drinking and fun. Put it on for 10 minutes, no one laughed and took it back out. (probably mid-80s) It really wasn't funny, none of the jokes were like he told on television and it was just full of swearing. Confused

Haven't bothered with him since.

RockAndSausageRoll · 29/12/2018 19:45

I find Frankie Boyle/Jimmy Carr much more offensive tbh. And Ricky Gervais' jokes about terminally ill children.

Mrscaindingle · 30/12/2018 23:35

Dave Allen sketches were also a bit iffy....my point being you can't judge jokes from the 70's by todays standards. Love him or loathe him Billy Connolly paved the way for today's comics and took comedy away from the mother in law jokes.

Nettlescoop · 31/12/2018 00:43

This is a truly weird original post - the only upside is reminding me of how funny I found Billy Connolly.
