Goldman Sachs

So apparently Goldman Sachs (huge US investment bank) has officially said that they will pay for any transgender employees to have gender reassignment surgery as an employee benefit. What do people think about this?

happydappy2 · 07/12/2018 11:25

That’s a huge perk....how are they on maternity leave/time off for looking after children/job share/equal pay etc etc.

incallthebloodytime · 07/12/2018 11:27

I think a lot of people might want jobs there for the wrong reasons

And all the women for whom they aren't funding fertility treatment

And all the people for whom they aren't finding cancer treatment

And so on...

Will leave/boycott/dislike this stupid PR stunt

Needmoresleep · 07/12/2018 11:31

I thought they were funding fertility treatment and a range of other emplyee benefits.

NuttierThanSquirrelShit · 07/12/2018 11:35

I don't know about fertility treatment but anyone with cancer etc will have that covered by the private health insurance employees get.

IMO its an interesting move to radically show their support for anyone transgender. Box ticking to the max. It would be interesting to track the career path of any employee who does take advantage of it. DH (who told me about it and works in a similar bank) feels that they will actively promote them through the ranks but stop short of giving them very senior positions. He also said that it will make any transgender employee virtually unsackable. I'm not sure I'm with him on this last point.

It's only one of a range of employee benefits, though I would imagine the criteria is strict - this surgery is expensive.

LangCleg · 07/12/2018 11:40

Surely this is an American thing? They just mean that their employee health insurance is comprehensive enough to cover gender issues?

Yambabe · 07/12/2018 11:41

I think it's great.

Funding and support for any employee with a medical issue (physical or mental) has to be a good thing, and it's not like they can't afford it.

themailfail · 07/12/2018 11:50

They aren't the only bank to offer it to employees

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 07/12/2018 12:11

That's nice that they are funding surgery to help their employees feel like their body looks how they think it should.

Do they also pay for cosmetic surgery for other groups who feel that their body is not how ithey wish it was and whose mental health is negatively impacted because of it?

Terfing · 07/12/2018 12:29

Do GS believe that it's possible to change sex? That's groundbreaking news if so. I'd like to see their research on this.

MoltenLasagne · 07/12/2018 12:32

There are UK banks that offer similar through private health insurance to skip NHS waiting times. My feelings are mixed on this as I think it's fantastic that the pressures on the NHS are reduced, but I am concerned that it may lead to a fast track mentality that may end up with people regretting surgeries.

Needmoresleep · 07/12/2018 12:39

Part of a range of initiatives desugned to reduce the 'gender' pay gap.

Even the Mail struggles to put a spin on it.

It's probably seen by the company as good PR, while knowing, in reality, that they won't have to reach into their pockets too often given the small percentage of the population that we're talking about.

themailfail · 07/12/2018 12:48

Ffs... equal pay rarely happens; companies should be focusing on that as a priority imo.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 07/12/2018 12:50

Maybe they realise by making Fred from Accounts into Freda they can buy their salary?

RollerJed · 07/12/2018 12:57

FFS, the world has officially gone mad 🤷‍♀️

Dh was telling me this evening how Fairytale of New York is being redubbed to take out the word faggot as it's offensive. I said are they taking out the reference to slag as well (genuinely thinking they were being all PC)? No, apparently that can stay Hmm

deepwatersolo · 07/12/2018 13:06

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest that the (male) leadership of Goldman Sachs are into cross dressing. Therefore the consideration for fellow travellers.

Cherries101 · 07/12/2018 13:10

Goldman Sachs offers a lot of amazing company benefits. They pay for masters, offer market leading maternity benefits (including flexibility / guaranteed part time jobs), but you won’t get to them until you’ve paid your dues as an analyst. That means 60-80 hour weeks for a minimum of 2-3 years. Most Investment Bankers (around 80 percent) never get past the analyst stage.

KindOfAGeek · 07/12/2018 13:10

I'll go out on a limb and they have an eye to meeting their affirmative action quota without fostering a career path for women who might object to certain behavior.

Which makes a time efficient hobby like sexual cross dressing all the more valuable for GS employees.

SophoclesTheFox · 07/12/2018 13:28

I work in a similar organisation with a comparable reward structure.

The health insurance that I have as part of that reward structure recently told me that they won’t cover anything to do with menopause as it’s “not a medical issue” Angry

Sexist AF. This is no different- it’s no threat at all to the bottom line, and it looks good in the annual report, without doing anything to actually address gendered issues.

rightreckoner · 07/12/2018 13:40

IMO its an interesting move to radically show their support for anyone transgender. Box ticking to the max.

Also, as we know, it's only teenage girls who have to physically alter their body to fulfil their desire to transition. Men can just turn up in a dress a la Pips Bunce. And teenage girls don't work at Goldmans. So I doubt it will be taken up by anyone at all. But virtue signalling X 1,000,0000

Freespeecher · 07/12/2018 13:52

Goldman Sachs to pay for removal of Man Sacs (colour unknown).

Cherries101 · 07/12/2018 13:56

I think it’s more of a move to attract better publicity in India and SE Asia where transgender women have legal recognition as a third sex (but transgender men ie women who become men don’t).
