James Kirkup, on Rosa Freedman: Women are abused in the name of ‘trans rights’. But do MPs care?

James Kirkup on Rosa Freedman:

MPs and ministers have – quite rightly – taken time and trouble to debate and address the wholly unacceptable abuse and discrimination that transgender people sadly face all too often. In that, they were doing their jobs, representing the interests of people who need someone to speak for them.

Will that happen in the case of Rosa Freedman? Will MPs do their job and ensure that she can do hers without urine on her door and calls in the night telling her she should be raped and killed? Don’t bet on it. After all, she’s only a woman, and who cares about them? Who speaks for them?

Good article. He sounds angry. I hope it gets a wide audience.

It would be good to ask the new Minister for Universities, Chris Skidmore MP.
He was appointed this week following Sam Gyimah's resignation (Brexit based)

background:
'Chris was educated at Bristol Grammar School before studying history at Oxford, where he continued with postgraduate research.
Chris has written several history books including ‘Edward VI: The Lost King of England’, ‘Death and the Virgin: Elizabeth I, Robert Dudley and the Mysterious Fate of Amy Robsart’ and ‘Bosworth: the Birth of the Tudors’. Recently, Chris published ‘Richard III: Brother, Protector, King’. Chris is also a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.'

When Sam Gyimah MP came into the post his first public action re Universities was with regards the importance of free speech there:

Well done James, Matthew Wright and the Mail.

The Times is covering it - well done Lucy Bannerman

Where is the WEC on this - who is standing up for women? The silence is deafening and we will not forget those who stood by and bystander bullied when they have the power to put a stop to it.

It's very informative to see how many withhold condemning criminal acts against women - very very enlightening to see where people's allegiances actually are. More fuel to the fire of the fight back to cement feminism and women's rights in democracies and law plus have proportional representation for women as the oppressed majority by parliamentary representatives who have their best interest at heart - seems like we need a campaign to withhold voting for and tax payments to any rep/govt who doesn't centre women's rights in their policies.

How can we assess the impact of strategic withholding of voting for current MPs/parties in constituencies?

Goposie · 06/12/2018 01:48

I think I am going to have to subscribe to the spectator

Anlaf · 06/12/2018 05:00

Thanks James.

In the slight haze of adrenaline after WPUK (it is scary when male protestors bang and shout at all the doors to a venue), I hadn't realised Rosa was getting phonecalls threatening rape and murder that night.

Flowers to Rosa.

Anlaf · 06/12/2018 05:10

(And well done Matthew Wright, and Rod of the Mail, and the excellent Lucy B)

scepticalwoman · 06/12/2018 05:26

I wonder whether journalists ever ask particular MPs for a comment about the repeated threats and violence being meted out against women? Maybe they need to start asking some pointed questions of them? Make them get of that bloody fence that they've been sitting on and make it clear to the aggressive trans lobby what is expected of them in a civilised democratic society.

Not allowing comments.

Squall · 06/12/2018 07:14

Comsidering some of the comments I have been reading under Times articles of late, that might have been a good idea.

teawamutu · 06/12/2018 07:17

In the Times story - impact assessment asked LGBTetc groups but didn't seek the views of women.

Not surprised and glad someone's SAID it but AaaaaaaarrrrrggggghhrrrrrrrAngry

Floisme · 06/12/2018 07:33

Which MP has Reading University in their constituency? Whoever it is, it's time for them to speak up.

hackmum · 06/12/2018 08:40

It seems to be Matt Rodda - a Labour MP.

Floisme · 06/12/2018 08:46

Thanks hackmum, if anyone is a constituent of Matt Rodda maybe they could contact him?

Bowlofbabelfish · 06/12/2018 08:51

Another great article from James.

lucydogz · 06/12/2018 08:54

I've put it on Matt Rodda's Twitter feed. Anyone can do that.

Interesting headline.

Trans lobby sent me death threats, claims professor

Why would the headline not read "Professor targetted with death threats" ?

FleetsumNJetsum · 06/12/2018 09:17

I think I am going to have to subscribe to the spectator

I have recently subscribed, and a subscription for my DD as well, because of James Kirkup

Igneococcus · 06/12/2018 10:08

I think headlines aren't written by the author of the article.
I'm surprised there are no comments. The Times has been good at allowing comments, often without pre-moderation. I wonder why they decided against in this case.

happydappy2 · 06/12/2018 12:02

Possibly no comments allowed because they know intelligent people would very clearly list the other despicable things that have been going on. Perhaps they are being leant on not to allow any negative publicity to this issue? Purely factual evidence.

welshgendercrit · 06/12/2018 20:22

I think the lack of comments under the Times article is because it appears as a news item, not a comment piece. The Times is good about allowing comments under all opinion pieces, unlike the Guardian.

TorchesTorches · 06/12/2018 20:38

My MP is on that WEC list. I wrote to her with my concerns re the GRA and got a carefully worded response which quoted those (refuted) suicide stats and wanted to see how self id was going on in other countries. I hold no hope from the WEC ( but thanks for reminding me to send another email, I am going to send her some examples of where self id is going wrong in Canada).
