Feminist recommendations for Netflix?

Sorry, this is probably lighter than a lot of threads on here - does anyone have any feminist recommendations for Netflix? I'm sure I saw a recommendation for a documentary on here recently 🤔. Thanks.

Alias Grace.

VovoBickie · 25/11/2018 22:39

Hot girls wanted - really interesting view of the impact on (some) amateurs in the porn industry. There's a second one, i think about cam girls, but i haven't watched it yet.

AnyFucker · 25/11/2018 22:39

.

PositiveVibez · 25/11/2018 22:41

Hannah gadsby. Nanette. If you want an emotional ride.

HumourlessFeminist · 25/11/2018 22:46

Fab, thank you! I started a thread in Chat as well, then realised that I'd specifically like to watch some feminist things.

The Letdown.

Perhaps not overtly feminist but for me captured the burden placed on women to 'do' motherhood and all the shittyness of the early years of raising children.

I literally just watched a documentary on Gloria Allred - she is a lawyer who fights for women's justice. It was good

HumourlessFeminist · 25/11/2018 22:51

Oh, the Guardian said that Crazy ex-girlfriend is surprisingly feminist recently - is that true?

I think there's one called "she's beautiful when she's angry" which was recommended to me.

Ereshkigal · 25/11/2018 23:01

Also had "hot girls wanted" recommended.

City of Joy is a documentary about a community of female survivors of wartime sexual violence in DR Congo. They do work with a male doctor, but otherwise it's female focused.

memaymamo · 25/11/2018 23:04

City of Joy is excellent.

As for Crazy Ex Girlfriend.. it's an interesting mix. It both reinforces and deconstructs stereotypes I think. I love the show for how it represents mental illness and it's very funny.

Another vote for Nanette. It's brilliant .

HumourlessFeminist · 25/11/2018 23:19

I've added all of these to my list 🙂👍🏻.

I've watched Let down and the Gloria Allred documentary so far, I really enjoyed both.

Miss Representation
Feminists: What were they thinking?

And you HAVE to watch Nanette.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 01/12/2018 07:58

Another vote for 'She's Beautiful When She's Angry' and 'Nanette'.

HumourlessFeminist · 01/12/2018 13:39

I just watched Nanette 😭. So powerful, I'm planning to watch it again soon.

The Hunting Ground is a very good but terribly sad documentary about sexual assault in American Colleges. It features women who are trying to fight back legally against the colleges who tried to hide these crimes.

shartsi · 01/12/2018 16:21

Greenleaf, when says the heart. They have strong female leads.

QuentinWinters · 01/12/2018 17:42

Not an easy man. French film. I found it funny.

BeyondVicious · 01/12/2018 18:53

Bit out there, but I'd say the first season of Jessica Jones (I haven't seen the second one yet)

wanderingcloud · 01/12/2018 19:00

Another vote for Nanette. Simple incredible. Also Jessica Jones is good fun!

HumourlessFeminist · 01/12/2018 19:04

Oh great, thanks. I'm loving watching a bit more feminist things, I don't usually watch TV much at all.

I thought that my crazy x gf was a bit feminist in that it pokes fun at women's achilles heels but at the same time, does observe that women are set up for failure in many situations. I love it.

There was a film called nappily valley (?) about a black woman who thinks she's about to receive a proposal and instead she gets a PUPPY, with an audience of her friends, all embarrassed for her. She becomes a stronger person afterwards and what she does with her hair works for HER but the film shows how people perceive her.
