Women & Equality - the next 100 years.

Any other mumsnetters going?

It's going to be Facebook livestreamed apparently.

My goodness, you're so right Freespeecher. Shifty. That's exactly it! I can't believe I hadn't noticed, but the change in her facial demeanour is enormous, now I come to think about it. When she was younger, she always came across as utterly sincere and driven by this kind of fiery determination to tackle injustice (and she really did some superb work back then), but you're right, nowadays she comes across as shifty, as if she's sold out and she knows it.

What price an ermine robe, eh?

iLevictoiChete · 23/11/2018 05:44

I agree about the shifty demeanor. You could see it in her eyes last night, there's a different expression. When the topic is non-contentious, the face shows honesty. When there's a danger of being targeted by the woke crowd for saying the wrong thing, then you can see a definite change. Visible in other panel members too. People are scared to speak the truth. We have a very very long way to go before we are liberated.

James Kirkup expanded more on who was being afraid to speak up

Jonathan Best
@JonnnyBest
@jameskirkup
article. The many influential ppl who have approached James with concerns but will not speak publicly includes govt ministers, Labour front benchers, backbench MPs, big BBC journalists, NGO & corporate CEOs.

And as an aside, this also popped up on my timeline

Fraser Nelson
@FraserNelson
I’m struck by how many senior Brexiteers say - in private - just this. That EU membership is preferable to May’s deal. More in my

column tomorrow.

We could do with more courage calling to courage

I wonder how she imagines observant Jewish women will cope with her Party's new 'self-ID' ideology

Not sure whether the concerns of any Jewish people are very high on her list of priorities, tbh. Remember her report?

Needmoresleep · 23/11/2018 08:39

Great Kirkup article. Good to see The Telegraph engage.

I never got Chakrabarti. Admittedly until this issue I was pretty politically passive, preferring to fight local issues. However she lives near me, though in a much bigger house, and our children went to the same private prep school. Secondary schools are not great in our area, and virtually no one ended up with any moral high ground as they rented; tutored; prayed or paid their way out. But those committed to state education had options at primary level. I was genuinely surprised to discover that this woman I knew by sight, with the City husband and the lifestyle that went with it, was a high profile social campaigner.

That said her recent career moves don't seem to make much sense.

2rebecca · 23/11/2018 08:52

I've never expected much from her. She always seemed a career politician who would never say anything fellow liberals might find contentious.

LangCleg · 23/11/2018 08:55

I think comparing women's boundaries to something like Trump's wall is genuinely the most bloody offensive thing I've heard so far in this debate.

Fuck off to the far side of fuck, Shami. And when you get there, fuck off some more. Oh, and tell Jeremy that Labour is dead to me until it remembers what a woman is.

Wrathofjurgenklop · 23/11/2018 09:10

A short clip on a different subject.

www.youtu.be/r51mzOCdnhY
She seems troubled.

PreseaCombatir · 23/11/2018 09:15

You might die in a fire was very fucking deliberate i think

Melamin · 23/11/2018 09:28

Interesting choice of words Confused

AncientLights · 23/11/2018 09:28

Was she maybe offered her seat in the Lords so long as she switched allegiance to TWAW? She's another one in a long line of people who have lost my respect and admiration.

Melamin · 23/11/2018 09:31

I'm not seeing the interrupters of Heather BE's talk as refugees from any sort of sex or gender. Just the usual odd bods in black that always do this sort of thing.

irishfeminist · 23/11/2018 09:35

"Migrants to our sex"? "Refugees"? That's one of the most offensive things I've ever heard on the subject, which is really saying something. More like aggressive violent colonisers .

Ereshkigal · 23/11/2018 09:36

My God her reply disgusted me though. Can't give it word for word but something like "if you lock the house of your gender so tight that refugees can't get in, then you might just die in a fire" - I am sure she chose those last 4 words very deliberately.

For fucks' fucking sake. Lovely veiled victim blaming there.

Bittermints · 23/11/2018 09:47

Is it available to view now? If that DIAF comment has been immortalised it should be given wider prominence. I'd be chary of doing it without cast iron evidence of the phrasing, though.

Avegemitesandwich · 23/11/2018 09:52

Oh God, 'gender refugees' is going to be the new buzz phrase isn't it? The TRAs love to jump on something like that and milk it dry.

Ereshkigal · 23/11/2018 10:09

It's idiotic. More like squatters.

WhereYouLeftIt · 23/11/2018 10:14

Or fifth columnists. Undermining women/feminism from within to the benefit of men/MRAs.

rightreckoner · 23/11/2018 10:25

I bet she jumps up and down about colonialism and cultural appropriation but the colonisation and appropriation of womanhood is fine and dandy. Jamie Oliver’s Jerk Rice recipe - disgusting racism. Lady dicks - brave and stunning.

She is dreadful and always has been. I would have been surprised if she made any sense on this topic.

Mumsnut · 23/11/2018 10:50

I think the refugee comparison is rather apt. After all, some 'refugees' purporting to be 15 year old schoolboys turn out to be no such thing.

And Cologne.

This is precisely the problem GC women have with self ID. That imposters will hide amongst the genuine.

snowbear66 · 23/11/2018 11:16

‘Refugees” ...”migrants to our sex...”
-She is trying to stick us with right wing bigots but an increasing amount of people have legitimate concerns about this despite being abandoned by the political left.

hackmum · 23/11/2018 12:05

Ages ago I posted a link to a blog post (I can't find it now) that said the left was divided on Israel because some people thought of the early settlers as refugees, and some of them thought of them as colonisers. She said the same was true of the trans debate - do you see trans women as refugees of masculinity, or colonisers of femininity? I agree that's a part of why so many leftish women feel so warmly towards trans women - they think there's something brave about men who are rejecting masculinity and coming over to our side. Obviously they've never come across Jane Fae. (Or Aimee Challenor. Or Jess Bradley.)

rightreckoner · 23/11/2018 12:09

That’s a really good analogy. And nails exactly why one is at first sympathetic and then puzzled as to why those who seek refuge from toxic masculinity are so hostile to those who have always campaigned against toxic masculinity (ie, feminists).

We are the ones pointing out how limiting and damaging certain styles of masculinity can be. We’ve done so for centuries. We are the natural allies of gender non conforming men. So how they (some of them) have managed to enrage and alienate their natural allies is a puzzle. Until you realise they are colonisers not refugees. Helpful insight for me Smile

Needmoresleep · 23/11/2018 12:38

Except that it is normal for asylum seekers to go through checks before they are accepted and have full rights. And even then there is a period before they are granted full citizenship.

You can't just turn up and self-ID, in the same way that you should not be able to self-ID as a woman.

Barracker · 23/11/2018 16:48

I've had it on good authority before now that she's a fully paid up KoolAid drinker and influencing those around her.

The die in a fire comment that is almost always succeeded by 'terf' must surely be a thinly veiled threat.

I'm shocked at that.
