Liberal prostitution laws in Switzerland

Article in The Telegraph about making prostitution legal in certain areas and how this has made the situation worse for women and increased trafficking.

I’m shocked by the comments from the men in this article, I suppose many here will not be surprised though.

Well that was a depressing read. But you're right, not surprising. Men who use women in this way can only do it by not thinking of them as truly human.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/11/2018 20:42

That is a really really horrible article, but should be required reading.

LassWiADelicateAir · 12/11/2018 20:56

It is horrible.

I don't think it is a case of the punters thinking of women as not truly human but that these women, not being Swiss or one of the other important EU nations (France, Germany and the like but not the former Eastern bloc) are inferior and are of a lesser status than Swiss etc. The equivalent in Leeds is class rather than origin. They are human, but of little or no worth or importance.

Whilst I agree with your point as to what the effect is, in any argument against prostitution saying "the women are not thought of as truly human" has potential for being ridiculed and credibility is lost.

They are thought of as humans but humans who are available to be used in ways which would be unthinkable for a Swiss national and/or a woman of a higher class status.

A very good, though depressing article (Julie Bindel, I note).

The Telegraph actually has an excellent track record of reporting this. They're one of the few papers who've exposed the sham that is the supposed safe zone in Holbeck in Leeds, and they did a thorough investigation of German mega brothels a few years back which cut through all the crap about them being "empowerfulising".

But, as Wait says, never read the below-the-line comments in the Torygraph (on pretty much any subject... you might just about get away with it on the business pages, but every other bit is a cesspit).

LassWiADelicateAir · 12/11/2018 21:09

Are there btl comments? I didn't see any. The OP refers to comments in, not on, the article.

Waitwhattheactual · 12/11/2018 21:13

I was referring to the comments reportedly made by men working at a ‘major human rights organisations in Geneva’. There aren’t any comments on this article (I would assume deliberately). I am not, unfortunately, surprised that these men are making these comments after all the revaluations of the aid sector recently but I really wish I was.

I think you do have a point Lass

I think this only works for most men if they can ‘other’ the women. I can’t imagine how anyone thinks these women (sometimes girls) are there by choice, especially men who have grown up in a society where both sexes are educated together and work and socialise together

I used to live near a red light district and can tell you its common for men to decide you are one of those lesser women if they choose to, and with no provocation. (And that also creeps into official services including police and ambulance.)
It does not surprise me that a teacher was dragged into a car, kidnapped and raped near the red light district in Leeds; or that the police decided not to prosecute.

LassWiADelicateAir · 12/11/2018 21:30

I don't think one should assume that right wing men are going to be fine with this. I'm on the right , so is my husband. He is as anti porn and prostitution as I am.

This cuts across politics- you'll get plenty of lefty blokes defending prostitution and men like Ben Shapiro who are opposed to legalisation of porn and prostitution.

Ereshkigal · 12/11/2018 21:36

Yes, very true.

Waitwhattheactual · 12/11/2018 21:37

Yes upstart I can see how you would have to do that to rationalise behaviour most people would surely find abhorrent.
One of the many shocking things about Rotherham was the language used by the police to describe the girls.
Is the managed area in Leeds still in operation? I thought it was a trial, surely it has failed? That story of the teacher was awful. Like Rotherham it shows the police are not enforcing the law the way the public expect (certainly not how I expect them to)

Yes, it is not confined to a political ideology. It’s unfortunate that legalising prostitution is dressed up as ‘progressive’. I can’t follow the logic of this argument, it only works if you believe we live in a world where everyone is already equal and free

The Leeds managed area certainly is still operating.

See my thread I started earlier. Leeds City Council to debate this Wednesday if anyone can make it?

It's is a shorter version of this article by Julie, which I saw a link to on Twitter a couple of weeks ago. Deeply depressing and disturbing.
