I'm not sure if I've missed this being posted here. For 7 minutes Fox and Owl discuss their activism, the transphobia they face and their 'off the record' meetings with politicians on BBC 3.

It's one of the funniest things I've seen since "league of gentlemen'" left our screens.

Agree 😂 Was worried no one shared my sense of humour but I put it on while I was cooking dinner yesterday and had to stop as I was laughing so hard.

"If I wasn't a transactivist I would be a screen printer" 😁

Ereshkigal · 09/11/2018 21:27

I can't get my head around why the waitress would do that either! Why should your friend apologise?

FloralBunting · 09/11/2018 21:32

Ereshkigal Grin Actual laugh out loud here. That was very The Office wasn't it?

I reckon it was Fox that said the 'changing the world' comment to Bath's friend. Fox likes to do the cringey blokey encouragement thing, it's very obvious if you watch a few of their videos.

Avegemitesandwich · 09/11/2018 21:48

What the hell was the chanting in Totnes about? It sounded like a cult!

borntobequiet · 09/11/2018 21:50

What’s with flinging the laundry onto the sofa? Is that activism? And what happened to the dog?

Ereshkigal · 09/11/2018 21:51

What the hell was the chanting in Totnes about? It sounded like a cult!

It really did.

borntobequiet · 09/11/2018 21:52

Oh I see the dog reappeared.

FloralBunting · 09/11/2018 21:58

What does your activism involve, oh brave non binary types?

Well, we travel to London quite a bit and we do some lacklustre chanting in Totnes. It's quite ground breaking.

Ereshkigal · 09/11/2018 22:01

Poor old Totnes, to have this disappointing gathering foisted upon the town.

RedToothBrush · 09/11/2018 22:10

The chanting in Totnes was EPIC! Like really fucking epic. I am now forcing DH to watch it now, since you've all reminded me.

NotTerfNorCis · 09/11/2018 23:24

Owl really emphasises the 'humble little homemaker' role. All that shrinking body language, that deferring to Fox. They are like walking gender stereotypes.

RedToothBrush · 09/11/2018 23:53

You can't unsee the male / female socialisation can you? DH was 'WOW' at it. He thought the Totnes chanting was like a religious gathering.

NewWomensMovement · 10/11/2018 00:34

Agreed about the 'non-binary is valid' being an anticlimax after the more assertive and energetic-sounding TWAW TMAM.

It sounds a bit like "Uncertainty is okay, we think, for now, don't we?

It suggests a bit of a back story in their own movement that you'd have had to have been there to get. Probably was a bit stressful. I imagine it involved lots of female people imploring lots of male people that they may have some sort of place.

FloralBunting · 10/11/2018 08:17

I imagine it arose out of the cutting edge of specialness.

They've been very familiar with the idea of swapping 'gender' as that has had currency in our culture for quite some time now. And for a while, with both Fox and Owl, that was enough to be on the cutting edge. But as the movement has raised it's profile, some of those incessant navel gazers began to realize that just presenting as 'another gender' wasn't quite special enough anymore, and the Non Binary thing was a bit of godsend for them.

The trouble is that it's so navel gazey that no one really knows what it means, so it's a) a bit hard to get everyone enthused about in the first place and b) even harder to find a slogan that inspires more than "Oh. Right. Yeah." in response.

My best friend is a lesbian who dresses very butchly. Fox/ Owl/ one of their hand maidens tried to high 5 my friend and told her ‘your the kind of guy that’s changing the world’ while we were minding our own business eating cake. BF laughed and said ‘I’m a woman you twat’.

I have yet to watch the vid, but bathfull's experience tells it all really.

Best friend is a woman
Who presents in masculine way
So can't be a woman ”your the kind of guy”
But is recognisably a woman ”that's changing the world”

Summary: Humans, including transactivists, can see what sex people are, and transactivists think masculine women are men

BathFullOfEels · 10/11/2018 08:38

eresh waitress wanted friend to apologise for calling Fox/Owl/Maiden a twat. We were in a little cafe that is run as some kind of young peoples initiative. We didn’t realise the group of kids that stand out as being nob heads in Totnes (quite a feat when there’s several people that walk around carrying owls or kookaburras) are seen as being awesome and radical by the cafe workers/ owners/ whatever.

gendercritter · 10/11/2018 09:20

The chanting was horribly cult like wasn't it?

I can think of exceptions but it's funny how actual facts don't need to be chanted in a droning voice at protests to be taken seriously. Can you imagine it?

'Alumininium is a metal!'
'Horses are mammals!'
'Opposable thumbs give humans the ability to grasp shit in a useful manner. Take that, disbelievers!' Whoop, holler, etc etc.

That was some dreary-arse activism.

AngryAttackKittens · 10/11/2018 09:52

Can they just have the cat from the video where they were glaring at each other over the garden fence do all their videos from now on? I feel that that would be more educational and garner higher views. The internet loves cats.

Ereshkigal · 10/11/2018 10:37

My dad knows a man who walks around carrying an owl! Not in Totnes but another SW location.

This.

ChattyLion · 10/11/2018 10:44

Eels, Grin

Sorry if already posted but I saw Fox and Owl are doing some kind of book tour to promote their fantastical writings soon.. Hmm

FuriousOfSurrey · 10/11/2018 10:57

Fox and Owl Activists makes me think of a strange cross between The Animals of Farthing Wood and Transformers. Small woodland creatures - ACTIVATE. What a pair of dreary little bores trying so hard to be different and special.

OrchidInTheSun · 10/11/2018 11:12

Dreary is the word.

AngryAttackKittens · 10/11/2018 11:15

They want so badly to be interesting that when I'm in a generous mood I feel a bit sorry for them.
