BBC Children in Need gives money to Mermaids. To make sure none of my money reaches them, I'm going to donate directly to charities I want to support instead.

OP posts:
HandsOffMyRights · 06/11/2018 08:35

I refuse to donate to them now, yet no doubt there'll be activities at my children's school.

I may not be able to stop the Govt. stealing my taxes bankrolling Stonewall, but I will fund Transgender Trend instead of CIN.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 06/11/2018 11:16

Pudsey gets it though. Even if CiN don't.

arranfan · 06/11/2018 11:28

CiN said they'd defund a Glasgow Rape Crisis centre because they were 'not doing enough for men and boys'.

As Jessica Eaton remarked on Twitter :

If this is the reason CIN declined this grant fund they need to take a long hard look at themselves. How come when we are bid writing for women, you constantly get ‘what about the men?’ But I can win £650k for our male mental health centre and no one asked me about women once.

TheCountryGirl · 06/11/2018 11:38

I will never donate - not sure what to do if my kids' school is running activities. 🤔 Refuse?

Ereshkigal · 06/11/2018 11:42

Fairenuff · 06/11/2018 11:50

Yes refuse and tell the school why. Offer to donate to a different charity instead.

Popchyk · 06/11/2018 12:18

They won't be getting a penny from me.

Big Lottery Fund has funded Gendered Intelligence.

City of London Corporation (remember Edward Lord) also gave £125K to Gendered Intelligence. link

Big Lottery Fund (112K) and Comic Relief (23K) also both donated to MESMAC last year.

MESMAC is the Yorkshire charity for men who have sex with men. They also had a project that deals with the sexual exploitation of boys (Project Blast). This year alone they have had one former director jailed for the sexual abuse of boys and Project Blast shut down because of inappropriate relationships between staff and clients. Remember, this project is for survivors of child sexual exploitation. MESMAC blames The Times for covering these two stories and making them look bad.

apps.charitycommission.gov.uk/Accounts/Ends07/0001040407_AC_20170331_E_C.PDF

We could do with pulling together all the funding for Gendered Intelligence, Mermaids, Mesmac, Stonewall as well of course.

SirVixofVixHall · 06/11/2018 12:39

My child has to do a GCSE exam that involves fundraising for children in need. They can’t choose a different charity. It is really annoying as they raise thousands of pounds. I have stopped donating as an individual and I will raise it with the school but the money has already been raised this year.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 06/11/2018 12:49

Might be worth digging into how CiN decide who to award grants to.

If they are all what about the men, nope not interested in women girls getting sexually abused raped etc, and bang up for telling girls to get their kit off in front of men then it may be that some of the usual suspects or some new suspects have wingled their way into the panels/ helped form or reform teh funding rules etc

Certainly teh idea that charities are for helping people and only men are people is quite prevalent at the moment >> amnesty etc

NothingOnTellyAgain · 06/11/2018 13:04

BBC report about the Glasgow situation www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-45137638

Key piece is here maybe:
"This decision was in no way connected to the support of male victims, we award grants to charities regardless of gender."

Could be they didn't want to fund as they don't support transwomen and transgirls - who the BBC would not view as men or boys obviously .

NothingOnTellyAgain · 06/11/2018 13:06

Glasgow rape crisis mentions women and girls repeatedly all over its website and also uses stats related to sex offences about women and girls which could have led to them coming under attack > people targeting their funding.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 06/11/2018 13:12

I don't actually know if they support transwomen and transgirls - quick sqiz at their site didn't have anything.

If they aren't explicit about it then again this could have led to CiN beign lobbied to remove funding.

Rape crisis centres that only want to look after cunty people have been a key target for TRAs > see court case in canada etc

theOtherPamAyres · 06/11/2018 13:18

For a charity that purports to help children, it spends an awful lot on steering children towards transition:

*BBC Children in Need currently spend £450k on transgender programmes:

£125,861 Mermaids
£115,953 Gendered Intelligence
£91,353 Leicester LGBT Centre
£74,541 Allsorts Youth Project
£30,000 The Proud Trust
£16,580 Hart Gables Tees Valley
£454,288 Total*

see topic in August 2018 for further discussion about CIN:

Mrkhtake2 had an interesting thread about the disproportionate funding of trans v. LGB projects:

VictoriaBun · 06/11/2018 13:29

One of the many reasons why I do not donate :

BBC Children in Need has kept £87.7million stashed away in its investment portfolio instead of giving it directly to charity, its latest accounts reveal.

The charity, which has raised more than £600million for youngsters in the UK since 1980, is preparing to launch a fresh appeal to viewers next month.

But some donors may be surprised to discover it does not give the money directly to good causes.

Trinity1976 · 06/11/2018 13:38

Would writing to Children in Need help? Maybe they simply are not aware of Mermaids methods. There is now increasing evidence mounting up against the 'affirmation' approach. More detransitioners are coming out. Mermaids are rushing kids down the transition path. No attempt to get to the bottom of why they may feel the way they do.

LassWiADelicateAir · 06/11/2018 16:09

Setting aside trans issues , why should a school be able to insist a child supports one particular charity? I have never given money to Children in Need or Comic Relief. I object to being dragooned into supporting a charity.

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 06/11/2018 16:13

liverpoolresisters.wordpress.com/2018/08/16/the-bbc-and-transgender-children/

The BBC is definitely supportive of transing children, and has been for quite some time.

Melamin · 06/11/2018 17:00

I give to the charities I want to give to. I can't see the point of supporting the middle man.

There are a lot of charities around who exist to raise money to give to the charities of their choosing. Funny old world.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/11/2018 15:18

LassWiDelicateAir -it is the Welsh Baccalaureate . They have to raise money for CIN as part of it, not fundraising would affect their final grade. I wonder if the school chooses the charity , or Welsh Government ? Will find out.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/11/2018 15:20

Also they have to do it in groups, so if one child refused to fundraiser but the others were happy that would be a problem.

OldCrone · 07/11/2018 15:37

SirVix Have you seen the Transform Cymru Toolkit? Funded by the Welsh government.

merrymouse · 07/11/2018 15:48

CiN also gave £200k to Kids Company in 2002 when Alan Yentob was a trustee of the charity and director of children’s programming.

Trustees had been warned that the charity had inadequate financial controls (i.e. accounts were a complete mess) and they knew that the charity wasn’t paying PAYE taxes.

Their claim that all donations go directly to children is also a bit suspect as it undervalues the cost to all charities of paying their staff and managing the charity well.

CiN have these costs too, it’s just that they can specifically categorise telethon money as going direct to charity because other costs can be met from investment income.

They also don’t have to pay for on air publicity - which arguably is funded by licence fee payers.

captainproton · 07/11/2018 16:26

My children’s school have a spotty day for CIN. I’m boycotting it although I suspect I’ll be the only one. Every year I buy a tshirt and tat, which also has an environmental cost attached to it. I’m going to donate to another local charity and send my kids in with a letter and their own clothes.

I hate how giving to CIN and others like comic relief is almost expected. It’s just as bad as chugging tbh.

LikeDust · 07/11/2018 16:41

It would be nice to have a list of organisations we want to donate to during the CIN telethon.

I remember the Nia Project had a fundraiser for decorating their supported living accommodation - that sort of thing.
